I read the 1952 edition. The book gives an excellent review of Clipper and Barque type commercial shipping, including a description of the different ranks(AB's to the Captains) of the crews. Descriptions of the routes and issues in setting a course, that would in the end take you to the far side of the world, the costs and cargo considerations involved. Lastly a description on the schooling and career choices for those choosing such a life.

Ahoy

if you have any interest in ships and the sea
you know Alan Villiers work

this book is filled with information
about the way and how of square rigged ships

the intro alone is worth the price

in all ways shapes and forms
this is a wonderful book
