I picked this one up because I was mesmerized by Kevin Smith's other book, My Boring-Ass Life. Where that one was a 500-page collection of blog entries and diary scribblings, Silent Bob is a much slimmer collection of "polished" essays that some magazines hired Smith to write at some point. Weirdly they're not nearly as interesting. I think Smith ...more

This book is a collection of Smith's articles from Arena magazine. The first half was very good, and also incredibly funny. It made me want to watch his movies, and he also convinced me that I should reconsider my dislike of Ben Affleck. His story about meeting David Duchovny was so funny, and Smith seems to be at his best when he's being the ultimate fanboy.

However, the second half of the book became very tedious and mostly consisted of unfunny dirty jokes and name dropping. Just becau...more

I admit it: I love almost everything 'Kevin Smith.' While I have loved all of his movies, I actually prefer his writing (non-screenplay) to the movies. In the movies, you have someone else doing their best to give life to his words, but in writing, as on stage with the 'Evening Wasted with Kevin Smith' DVDs, it's straight from the man himself. Always brutally honest and humble, you get to the end of one of his books, and feel like you are already good friends with him, and have been for a long...more

I liked this book because I'm a Kevin Smith fan... that comic book loving, role playing, crude joke telling part of me has never completely gone away. If you haven't listened to any of his commentaries on his movies, you'll probably laugh quite a bit when you read this. However, because I'm enough of a fan that I've listened to most of his commentaries (he normally puts several different tracks on each DVD), most of the material in the book felt old to me. Still, the people who would pick this b...more

If you don't mind occasionally lengthy narratives about things that happen in the background of the film making process, then this one's for you. I figured this would be like a fix for my jonesing for more "Evening with Kevin Smith" narratives, but it turned out that listening to him is much more entertaining than reading him. (Sorry, Kevin... I still love you)

I love Kevin Smith, but this book is hit and miss -- mostly miss. It's a collection of columns he's written for various websites and magazines over the years, and some of them are just boring. Others have a glimmer of the trademark Kevin Smith wit, but even then fall a bit short. If you're a hardcore Smith fan, you might want to pick this up. Otherwise, skip it.

recommends it for: fans of Kevin Smith's movies
If you're only a casual fan of Smith's films subtract one star, if you don't like his films at all subtract three. Smith is a personable writer but this is not likely to win over any new fans. A hilarious final chapter about an imaginary orgy at a Comic-Con convention makes up for a miserable section during which he sings Ben Affleck's praises.

I copped this book while in LA at Silent Bob's secret Stash. It was highly entertaining. Really it's a compiling of his Vanity fair articles. What respectible magazine would give him a monthly article?!?! Anyways good for a laugh.

Always funny, but sometimes a bit over-the-top, Kevin Smith's first book is undeniably entertaining. Fans of Kevin Smith will appreciate his witty charm, his dirty jokes, and his admiration for Ben Affleck.

A compilation of a bunch of previously published material, both online and in-print. I wish the dude would sit down and write a proper book, instead of recycling stuff us obsessed fans have already read.

Smith is deeply, annoyingly talented - by rights you should hate him but cringing interviews with Ben Affleck (whilst fully Bennifered up) and Tom Cruise aside, it's pretty good. Damn his eyes

so, so, so, so, so funny! I like him and I'm impressed by the way the he writes...so much so that I now feel compelled to watch all of the Kevin Smith movies from the begining. :)

The insight into Kevin Smith's thoughts was great as was the process of his work. But I was dying when he wrote how great of a relatinship Ben Afflect and J-Lo had. Classic!

He's a lot more entertaining on DVD or in person. The book doesn't convey the essence of his personality very well, and the stories are a bit less interesting as a result.

It was ok. Kevin Smith is a great writer, but I don't care about his toilet habits. Pretty good passages, but most are a bit forgettable.

Really good stuff. If you have even a passing interest in films, Hollywood, and/or Kevin Smith, this is a must-read.

It has it's moments but after awhile tends to grate. Not to mention Smiths baffling obsession with Ben 'the chin' Affleck.
