The Walking Dead, Vol. 3: Safety Behind Bars (The Walking Dead #3)
An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: there is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living. This volume follows our band of survivors as they set up a permanent camp insi...more

The bloody, putrid, rotting corpse of soap opera goodness that is The Walking Dead graphic novels is in its full balls out glory in the third collection Safety Behind Bars.

The death toll is still rising as the band of humans reduce and loved ones die. The undead zombies are unrelenting and never seem to reduce in number. Just when you thought it was safe to kick back and enjoy your new territory they seem to appear from all areas. Their new territory to start up a new life is a prison.
One positive of being behind bars is there should be a library and plenty time for reading.

The Walking Dead “Safety Behind Bars” is the third book in the walking dead series. It holds a lot of action and new characters are introduced. New relationships are made and others are broken. It still holds the same theme as the other ones. It is a little bit off the whole zombie theme and really develops the characters.

I hesitated to read Volume 3. I had never even picked up a graphic novel until Volumes 1 and 2, following the completion of season 2 of The Walking Dead. When I found that Volume 2 tracked with the ending of Season 2, when Grimes & Co. discovered the prison, I wasn't sure if I wanted to spoil the upcoming season of the show. Since through the first two volumes, there have been many differences, both major and minor, between the books and the show, I decided to read, figuring that the show wr...more

I have to say that I'm loving this series. It is a definite 5 in my opinion. I have never read a graphic novel series before, but with all the hype, I figured I'd give it a try. I found that I'm liking the graphic novel format, even if there isn't as much depth as an author telling you exactly what's going on. I like that I can fill in the blanks with the faces being given and whatnot.

To be fair to everyone who likes this series: I could give two craps about zombies. Really. They're all the same...they do the same things...they're gross and predictable. In every zombie story I've read this is true. So I probably shouldn't have started reading these. Yes, I've seen a couple episodes of the show and watched it for the soap opera aspect of the survivors' lives. I do actually like the show.
But reading these books puts me in a place I really don't want to be mentally. Stressed out...more

Robert Kirkman's ongoing zombie saga remains a harrowing, often unpleasant, read.
After finding a prison at the end of Volume 2, Rick and company attempt to set-up shop figuring that the walls and fences will provide security and supplies for them to hold out for an extended period. When they find that not everyone in the prison has died or left, things become complicated. Furthermore, they learn certain things about the zombie plague, resulting in further consequences.

How often do you get a graphic novel that deals with themes such as suicide, justice, mental illness, murder, judgement, prejudice, the list goes on... and can be read in around an hour?
I'm finding these volumes to be quick reads, but by no means are they shallow, meaningless reads. There is a lot of stuff being looked at here, a lot of really deep stuff.

What I love about the Walking Dead franchise in general is that you can read as far as you like in the comic series and it doesn't spoil a thing for your enjoyment of the television series. At the same time, reading the graphic novels will inform you a little bit as to what could happen in the TV series, so readers are rewarded with an enticing leg-up over those who don't flip the funny pages. With this volume, I have a pretty good idea of where the next season of AMC's "Walking Dead" could go -...more

So the tension finally begins to build. Still Robert Kirkman's ability to tell a story that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat is nearly lacking. No big deal - as long as Charlie Adlard continues with his wonderful artwork, we can ignore Kirkman's inability.

When I heard that The Walking Dead graphic novel series was in development for a series on AMC (home of my absolute favorite, Breaking Bad). I was elated. Then reality sank in. I was still stinging from what had been done to the Terry Gooodkind novel series, The Sword of Truth. My mind spun, prompting me to dig out the series, wondering where the problems might occur. No surprise, the volume that solidifies the series as truly great, the one that earns Robert Kirkman the title I alluded to in my...more
The continuation of volume 3 right where volume 2 left off at the prison. it's weird thinking that a prison would be the safest most reliable place to raise a family in a zombie apocalypse. i guess since i read the passage this year it wasn't that suprising, but it's still creepy, the idea of having to live behind bars just to be safe. this installment was great because there were lots of interesting character developments, especially with Lori. How untrusting she was of the inmates at the priso...more

I don't know what it is about this series. I don't find it to be exceptional in any way and yet I keep buying the next volume because I feel like a zombie read and I figure I'm following these characters already....
They aren't bad reads, but there's just very little 'new' in them and there seems to be a cycle forming with these volumes that leads to less character growth.
I'm not sure if it is the art, the writing, or a combination of both, but I find it hard to tell many of the secondary charact...more

Luv dem zombies. Always a great excuse for a story line. What Walking Dead does is use the zombie menace to drive some tense drama within the 'community' of non zombies. A zombie apocalypse is guaranteed angst -- and you thought you had problems! There is also an Americana play out in the series that makes for some curious political depth as zombie-ism serves to cause other social pathologies to fester, and while a bullet to the brain may resolve a few issues with pestering zombies, among the su...more

Note: Yes, I am going to use the same review for all of the Walking Dead comics I've read. Don't judge me too harshly; I have a lot of reviews to write.
What I liked:
-The art. It was simple yet beautiful and strong. It painted a clear picture and it even had me smiling sometimes, like Rick’s face when he got hit with the shovel. It made me giggle.
-Character death. I love that the creator isn’t afraid to kill off a character without any notice. You never know who will live and who will die, and it...more

The third installment was my favourite out of the three I've read so far. The survivors having just found a prison hunker down to rebuild and start a new life inside. Although this new home isn't what it seems to be. The fences keep the dead from coming in but the real danger is each other within the confined spaces of the prison. This volume had some great moments which kept me on the edge of my seat constantly eager for the next page. The story and interactions between characters become expone...more
hmm. this one was especially gross and depressing. without much of the interesting social dynamics- they barely touched on authority and morality; the cop guy pretty much just got to say- i'm a cop, so I know what's what. um, yeah, maybe within your previous society you had authority within the system, but i'm not sure that means it's justified in a post-society structure. i mean, it could have been a bad idea previously, but "the best we could do"...just sayin'. for getting to start over, they...more

The third volume of The Walking Dead includes issues 13-18, and is absolutely awesome!
The small group of survivors has stumbled on a jail and can't believe their (possible) luck. If they can clear the zombies, they could actually start a real life here. There's sure to be food, they'll be protected by the fences, and will have relative safety for once. Of course, things aren't ever that easy and they soon find themselves in the middle of some pretty shocking situations that aren't caused by the...more

This series just keeps getting better and better. Safety Behind Bars continues on the foothills of Volume 2. The gang has came across a prison. With its high fences and stockpile of canned goods, it seems like the perfect place to settle down for the rest of their days. But they soon learn that they're not the only survivors at the place.
The personal drama for Volume 3 of The Walking Dead is explosive. The air is heavy with distrust and unease. It's been many months since the zombies arrived, an...more

I originally started reading this series because my brother recommended it to me a while back before the actual show came out. The third volume of this series teaches us to not only fear the undead, but to fear the living too. During a zombie apocalypse of course. The survivors in this volume come across an abandoned prison that is both a great thing and a bad thing. The great thing about this volume is that nobody is safe. Literally, anything can happen. Like I said before, the art is still ama...more
I'm reading these books alongside watching the TV series, so I'm a little bit bias in that respect. So in my head, Andrew Lincoln is Rick Grimes, along side the other actors from the fantastic programme.
I think the issue I have is the tension that is missing from the books. The illustrations are good, the characters interesting, even if there are a few too many for me to keep track of.

Well. That was certainly death-filled.
As Rick and company try to make long-term plans, they repeatedly claim they're safe now. Yes, oh so safe.
There's a strange naïveté to these characters at times, born of their desperate need to find a haven. Thinking they've found it, their relief is so great they forget to be vigilant. Zombies aren't the only threat, after all.
In the most difficult volume thus far, characters bounce between enthusiasm and rage. It seems fitting that raw emotions are unleash...more

I got the first two volumes of this series over a year ago and finally got around to obtaining the third in the series. Volume 3 continues on the heels of volume 2, the discovery of the prison. With the undead unwilling to dwindle in numbers, Rick and his band of not so merry followers feel that they have found a safehaven in the prison.
Their groups numbers are drastically reduced, the loss of their loved ones leaving them defeated and the food has all but run out, they all really needed a bit o...more

Reading Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 1 alongside the Walking Dead series, you begin to see some weakness in the presentation here. In The Walking Dead, conversations take place in multiple word bubbles across a single panel, which allows for exposition and monologue, but not much depth in character movement or reaction. The conversation can feel static. It works well for signature scenes, but Moore's work seems better distributed across the page, and his dialogue sound...more
