A great addition to the series.

This book 3 stars/ most of the series 4 stars
Charlie Bone believes he is a normal ten year old English boy, but when he discovers that he can hear conversations taking place in the photographs around him, his domineering Grandmother Bone sends him off to attend Bloors Academy for Gifted Children. While she hopes he has inherited his magical abilities from the evil side of the family, Charlie befriends the small group of descendents of The Red King trying to do good in the world. There's Ly...more

I really liked the fiction book, Charlie Bone and the Shadow. The main characters are Charlie Bone, Emma Tolly, Tancred Torsson, Lasinder Sage, Olivia Vertigo, Dagbert Endless, Dorcas Loom, Titana Tilpin, Paton Yewbeam, Erick Shellhorn, Billy Raven, Harken the enchanter, Ountus Yewbeam, and finally Runner Bean (dog). Although this is a long list they all played a very big part in the book. Charlie Bone is set mostly in the present, but it is also set 900 years ago. The book's setting is in a ci...more

Can you imagine somewhere where certain people had extraordinary powers? In the book Charlie Bone and the Shadow, where this story takes place, some people do have special powers. I read the book Charlie Bone and the Shadow and it is a great story. This story is written by Jenny Nimmo and is the seventh book in a series.

In this story an evil enchanter comes back after being defeated and banished once. Throughout most of the story is in a painting. Any body he wants he lures th...more

I have loved this series so far, so I don't know if it is just this title, or what. But the stories are starting to seem a little repetitive. Sure, the actual problem is new, but poor Charlie solves it in a predictable way (for those who have read the other books), and I was really bothered, for the first time, by the lack of helping adults in this book. Maybe because Charlie finally has his father back, but his parents, intent on a "second honeymoon" manage to be gone for the entir...more

#7 Children of the Red King YA fantasy series. Charlie and his endowed friends, all descendents of the fabled Red King, all attendees of Bloor's Academy, are once again under attack by the nasty side of the family tree. Charlie's parents are still away on their extended second honeymoon, and Charlie's nasty Grandma Bone brings a wrapped package into the basement, knowing that Charlie's curiosity will get the better of him, and it does--he and his friend Benjamin's dog Runner Bean are sucked into...more

So I really loved this book. It only takes place during one maybe two weeks of school for Charlie. Charlie is lured into a painting with the Shadow. Runner Bean is also lured for a different reason. Charlie gets out but Runner doesn't. He has to rescure Runner and Billy who also gets lured into the painting. It was so fun to read I did it in one day. If you love to read fun this book is it.

I liked this book much more than I thought I would. I have always enjoyed Jenny Nimmo's books, particularly the Magician series. The Children of the Red King series has been on and off, but this volume was way better than the previous one, as there is more action taking place.

Charlie Bone is once again facing danger when his awful Grandma Bone brings a mysterious painting into their home and deposits it in their cellar, under lock and key. Knowing full well that Charlie has the po...more

A must-read for those who have read all of the previous Charlie Bone books, but nothing much of substance happens here. I was hoping for much more.

Charlie Bone and the Shadow is the most amazing book ever by Jenny Nimmo! Its about a mysterious painting that Charlie Bone, an endowed boy,aka Children of the Red King. He can go into pictures and paintings and talk to the people in them. But this painting is different, everybody can go into it. Charlie, and his best friends dog named Runner Bean, get trapped into the painting.Charlie gets out but Runner doesn't, so Charlie's best friend wont talk to him. So Billy, Charlie's other friend, tries...more

I like this series. Since it is for grade-schoolers book it is a quick read and it has some magic elements although the world of Charlie Bone is grounded more in our world than say a Harry Potter world. I do think the fight against the dark-side (can't resist a little Star Wars reference) is more daunting and scary in the Charlie Bone books than the Harry Potter series. Also, each Charlie Bone book is left wide open at the end for the next book in the series--that is a little unsettling for m...more

Just as good as the previous six in the series. Can't wait for #8. Another year?!?

Another good one from Jenny Nimmo. I am sorry that Simon Russell Beale is no longer narrating the audiobooks. Simon Jones just doesn't do some of the voices right!

Charlie and his friends have another encounter with the evil enchanter, Count Harkan. The enchanter, still trapped in Badlock, since the mirror of Amarate was broken will do anything to travel back, including kidnapping. So, when a painting of Badlock arrives at number 9 and Charlie's curiosity gets the better of him, i...more

Charlie's aunts and grandmother are up to their old tricks. This time they hide a painting with strange powers in their basement at the request of Tatiana Tilpin, aka Fairy Tilpin, the witch. She is still trying to free her ancestor from the painting to allow him to have his way on the new century. Charlie goes into the painting and meets his ancestor a giant, who only really wants to see his wife again. At some point Billy is drawn into the picture and is held captive through a spell. He is tol...more

I started this book in October -- 8 months to finish it. This is the seventh in a series, kind of a Harry Potter rip-off about a boy with special powers who attends a school for other children with special powers. There are some fun characters and clever adventures, but it just isn't compelling, at least not for me. I will probably read the rest as they come out because I get curious about how things turn out, but it will be a low priority, for sure.

I don't know why I read these. They're an annoying Harry Potter rip-off in many ways, but they do have some interesting and more original bits. This one, however, is just annoying. Almost everything that happens in it is a near-repeat of stuff from earlier books in the series, and you get hardly any of the local color which is what I really like in most of the others. I'm really not sure I'll bother to read the next one, whenever it shows up.

I just can't take it anymore. I picked this and #8 up from the library on a whim, hoping to be done with the series.

The story still has potential to be fun, but the childish writing and plot developments are just too much. I can't finish. Parents and protectors turn blind eyes to their children being threatened and killed, a "pet cafe" is supposed to be profitable, the stupid school just seems dumber and dumber, Charlie's character--impetuousness--never changes, good c...more

**SPOILERS**
So, this was supposedly the last of the books in this series, however, I learned from my librarian there is one more, which is good since this one left too many loose ends. This book was the same basic formula as the others. I guess the thing that gets me is that Charlie's underlying focus through the first 5 books is finding his dad, who, sorry, is painfully obvious in the first book as the piano teacher. It takes Charlie 5 books to finally find his dad and then his parents ar...more

As the series comes to a head, it continues to entertain, but I continue to feel that so many of these books are coming to an indefinite end. This one in particular ends on a note that feels particularly incomplete. Perhaps the intent was to simply prepare the reader for the denouemont of the 8th and final book. But more than any other of the Charlie Bone series, there's a clear "To be continued..." which should have been hovering on the last page.

this is the seventh book in the series and it continues the fast paced action of the previous six and ups the ante. this one finds charlie traveling into a world through a painting where count harken is very much alive and ready to continue his attack of the world in order to take over and push his evil agenda. it is a good read with some interesting twists added to the plot.

I like all the Charlie Bone books because each book it goes through his life by school semesters at bloor's academy. i also like it is because is kinda about supernatural stuff and thats what i'm into. In this one Charlie gets sucked into a picture and his moth pulls him out. when he gets out he finds one of his friends has been sucked into the picture too so he has to get him out.

I love the Charlie Bone series almost as much as I love Harry Potter! Charlie is a descendant of the Red King, a medieval sorcerer. Many of his descendants have special powers. Charlie can hear what people in pictures are saying and sometimes he goes into the picture. The Red King's descendants go to a school called Bloor Academy, where not all the magic is good.

Although still a good read, this book does not live up to its predecessors in the series. Charlie doesn’t seem to be quite effective as he used to be, and the fact that he is given a lot more problems to figure out only makes things worse. The dominating mood in the book seems to be a darker one than usual, but that can be guessed from the title.

This series just keeps getting better! I am, however, getting a little frustrated with the cliffhanger endings. I want to read the next book already!

One thing I think is great--at least Nimmo acknowledges the absence of adult role models and the frustration that causes for kids. Harry Potter just assumes that the kids don't care that they have to uncover the mystery all on their own. Charlie, on the other hand, is acutely aware of the absence of his parents and his uncle at the t...more

Charlie Bone is a good series. The author's humor and style remind me a bit of Harry Potter meets Snicket. The plotlines, however, are original. I like that Charlie remains friends with his next door neighbor who does not have a magic skill. Many of the characters have depth, they are not all good or all bad as is the case in many children's stories.

thought after 7 books the plot would get a bit slow but it doesnt, not sure how many books there are in the serise but will need to go and get book 8. much prefered them to the Harry Potter books and yes they are meant for young adults but i found them really good for just reading and relaxing especially with the long dark nights.
would highly recomend to younger readers.

This was a fun book, but was definitely my least favorite in the Charlie Bone series. It ended as a cliff-hanger, which I'm fine with, but it wasn't well done.
A new plot was added in the last 30 or so pages of the book and that plot was resolved by the end. I felt Jenny Nimmo departed from the entire point of the book. I am excited to read the next book, but not unbearably so.
