Using the poetry written by Vietnamese envoys to Chinese imperial courts, Kelley illustrates a thousand years of diplomatic exchange, including feelings of homesickness, the maintenance of a zone of "manifest civility" and the ambivalent relationship between the powerful center and vassal periphery.
