John Allegro's work is of diverse nature. He was one of the original scholars entrusted with the study of the scrolls found near the Dead Sea and wrote or edited several of the group's earliest, technical publications. He also wrote the highly speculative The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross in which he adduced what he took to be evidence for the origins of what became the Christian cult in a secretive fraternity of psychedelic mushroom eaters.
