Whilst I did find the author's approach a little dry at times, this book does do a good factual coverage of the history of the Lutheran Church especially from the 16th to 19th Centuries. I thought the coverage of the periods of "Orthodoxy" and "Pietism" to be quite well done.

However the 20th Century (no real 21st Century coverage even though the book has a 2010 date for the 2nd Edition) seems to concentrate on Europe and USA. Whilst I do agree that these are significant fields of interest - give

I wanted to know more about the historical context of the faith in which I was raised. So I got hold of A History of Lutheranism by Eric W. Gritsch. It offered a bit more detail than I needed, so that I ended up skimming large sections, but nonetheless I found it a fascinating volume, and I think my understanding has been enriched.

I actually started this a while ago but couldn't get into the pietistic phase. I enjoyed Gritsch's historical coverage and detail. I'll go back to this for certain sections in the future. A good reference as there aren't too many histories of Lutheranism out there.
