The story is set in the 1800 where the main characters are out to stake their claim in southern Africa. They are traveling along infamous roads which take them through the untouched wilderness, a beautiful land filled with warring tribes and wild animals. At the heart of the story is love, hatred, vengeance and greed.

recommends it for:
for those who want mindless listening that entertains
audio book-people who are doing mindless stuff with their hands and can listen to trite events which somehow seem exciting and interesting with history thrown in.
These WS books are guilty pleasure. I enjoy them a lot, especially when I am doing boring tasks anc can listen, but I am fully aware that they are not brilliant.

I'm not sure how this book landed on my list of books to read as I was not familiar with the author or the title, but I ordered it up from my local library on CD and from the first disc I was hooked. I was spellbound by this explosive adventure story with its multiple plots filled with intrigue, tragedy, violence, vengeance and passion. Wilbur Smith weaves a story that is so descriptive and exciting that I was swept away to South Africa. Now that is is done, I learn that it is the third in a...more

In the fast paced world of the Courtney brothers life is never dull. Wilbur Smith once again exhibits his seamless ability to run multiple story lines in parallel, building suspense and without ever loosing one. A desire to find out what happens next continues to drive one deeper and deeper into the book until the point of no return. Before i knew it i was completely engrossed and there was just no putting the book down.

I have not read any other of Wilber Smith's Courtney family South Africa novels. Even though this was not the first in the series it stood alone very well. I liked reading about how life was for the early settlers of South Africa and how different the political structure and daily life was at the time. I found the characters very interesting, though the writing gets a bit melodramatic at times. It was a really good book to take on vacation for plane and travel reading.

OK. So I started my review in the wrong place. Still, I found Smith's story telling highly addictive. I couldn't wait to sit in the car to listen to the book. His depiction of 18th century characters and places (Holland, south Africa)was an eye opener. I'm wondering what other novels he might have written and which I need to find.

Quite simply a larger-than-life adventure plot that starts out with a rescue at sea, then follows into a fugitive story with a revenge plot thrown into the chase, and ends with the most breathtaking finale that is told from four different perspectives and lasted more than 60 pages in hardcover!
What a fantastically entertaining read!

This is a phenomenal story during the early history of South Africa when it was a Dutch Colony. It has all the elements for a good story. I'm surprised it's not a movie. This book clearly comes from a male approach to life and it may be offensive to the present day feminist perspective. The author was honest to that era.

A very interesting plot with what looks like very researched data, I haven't been to Africa myself but the writer seems to be very accurate in his lovely descriptions; Wilbur Smith has this extremely detailed way of presenting the environment and adventure that really takes you there and you enjoy eavesdropping the conversations. Although some of the final actions are a bit too far-fetched, you cannot help being touched by the (un)expected turn of events, I loved the romantic dialogue between t...more

Listened to this on CD. Great adventure story...I guess it's a sequel or part of a series, but it stands alone pretty well.

This is one of the many hand-me-down books I have to read. And adventure book is not one I would chose on my own. That said, I found it hard to put the book down. I must confess that I was drawn in to the stories. Bushmen Xhia and Bakkat provided the comic relief in the story. There appeared to be five or more separate plots, although it was brought together in the end. Many things were, to me, unrealistic and far fetched, but maybe that is what goes into an adventure story to make it exciting. ...more

Well that is the last of the Courtney saga and I couldn't put it down for a week. 777 pages long was quite daunting at the start but for us 'boys', elephant hunting, Zulus, Arab intrigue, goodies and baddies, sex and battles at sea are quite appealing. The odd word this time was 'sounder' as in 'The entire sounder would freeze and listen for predators'(page 416). Let me know if anyone out there knows that is the word for a group of wild pigs in the jungle!!!

Rollicking adventure.
In this particular audiobook performance took a bit of concentration - there were jumps in the timeline and between the stories of different family members. These jumps were not a really production or abridgement problem (this version is unabridged). It would probably have been quite obvious on paper, where new chapters and sections would be (I assume) clearly delineated by headings or added white space.

A good swashbuckling story about two families that are sworen enemies starting new lives in Africa. The story follows the families through half a generation. I really liked the story, a lot, but...be forewarned...there is, as I recall, ALOT of sex in the book. Or maybe it just seemed that way to me. But there you have it.
