recommends it for: Alcott fans and thrill seekers
This book of short stories is a very interesting diverging from Alcott's usual works of love and friendship. All of these thrillers are sure to make you sit on the edge of your chair. Full of villains lurking in the strangest of places, each story will keep you guessing. The only drawback is that some of the situations seem a bit similar at times. However, this doesn't detract from the stories individually. Overall, a very intriguing read.

This was a side of Louisa May Alcott that made me chuckle, it was like reading all those fantastic stories that Jo wrote in her attic in <i>Little Women<i>. Very melodramatic! There are also quite a few of these where you can definitely see her abolitionist roots, but also how very far from the truth she was in her beliefs about African Americans.

This book offers readers a different perspective of Louisa May Alcott, an author we all know for her endearing semi-autobiographical story Little Women. These stories are definitely darker, and I really enjoyed reading through them while preparing my Master's thesis.

Unlike any other Alcott text, Behind a Mask is quite a sensational and shocking story of chicanery, mistaken love, and power. This recently discovered Alcott text is definitely a good read, but may take you by surprise if you are an Alcott fan.

The only story I've read in this is "Behind A Mask." An important text for discussing gender as performance. I'm sure Butler either talked about this or should have.

Has a copy to sell/swap — Read in January, 2002
The Unknown Thrillers of Louisa May Alcott. "Behind A Mask" is by far the better way to become acquainted with Alcott's racier side.

I read this in my American Literature course--and was so happy that the Little Women author had written something I liked!
