Jasper Parrott's writing style is almost comically stiff and in many spots reads like a press release. "Dody, an exceptionally gifted pianist and musician herself, has the truest of ears. Recommends it for: Ashkenazy fans or Soviet history enthusiasts
My only quibble with this autobiography was that Parrott, Ashkenazy's agent, seemed to do most of the talking near the end of the book. Instead of getting Ashkenazy's insight directly, Parrott gives us paragraphs of summary of the former's thoughts.

Ashkenazy's direct reflections saved this book. I especially enjoyed hearing about his childhood and his time at the Moscow Conservatory, and his words about his time as a recruit of the KGB.
