I just reread this book, and I remember now why I liked these so much in high school. These books have everything right about them that is wrong with Twilight. For one, it's over three quarters shorter. But that's just for starters.

Briar Creek is just about the quietest town imagineable, so when Mrs. Burdock's nieces, Rowan, Kestrel and Jade Redfern, move in next door, Mary-Lynnette and her brother Mark are obviously intrigued. They have good reason to be. The Redfern sisters aren't just beautiful, they're strange. Different. The Redfern sisters also happen to be vampires on the run, being stalked by their older brother, Ash.

The reason these books are so much better than Twilight is partially because of the women. Mary-Lynnette has personality. She has character, and not just because the author wasnts us to know that she's interesting. Mary-Lynnette has interests.

Much like Edward and Bella, Mary-Lynnette has an instant connection that she doesn't understand with a vampire--Ash--and also like Edward and Bella, Mary-Lynnette and Ash both at first try to keep apart from each other. But unlike Edward and Bella, we know their reasons, and they actually make sense. We see them change their minds about each other, and we understand why. We see them grow together over the course of this short book, and it makes sense.

Ash is hot, of course, but Mary-Lynnette sees right through that. She's too prickly for that.

She wasn't impressed by good looks unless they were the thin, brown, and interesting kind...Gorgeous guys--guys who looked like big ash-blond cats--didn't have any reason to develop their minds. They were self-absorbed and vain. With IQs barely high enough to keep a seat warm.

Mary-Lynnette never falls for Ash because he's a hottie. She is eventually won over by him because of his character, because of parts of who he is--who he really is--that show themselves to her.

And, not to mention, this short little book has a lovely bit of female friendship, between Mary-Lynnette and Rowan. Not to mention the sisterly bond between the three different, but strong and interesting each in their own way sisters.

This book isn't deep by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a fun fast read. It's what Twilight wishes it could be. I suppose a hundred thousand teenage girls can't be wrong, but I wish I could put the books in this series in their hands instead. They're just so much better on every level.(less)

What I like about this book, is the fact that Mary-Lynnette, actually has a choice, she could've make eveything perfet for Ash and stay with him, next to him, for eternity, but she decides she can not do with that kind of live.

Ash was such a jerk on "Secret Vampire", and I honestly hated him then, but this is a new story, and he shows his true persona. I honestly loved him here. Mary is strong, and not so delicate. L. J. Smith has this thing going on ( which is amazing), and all of her leading...more

Všechny jsou upírky, ale protože se jim nelíbí zákony Říše temnoty, které určují, jak se mají chovat, koho si vzít a protože navíc nechtějí pít lidskou krev (další upíři vegetariáni!), utečou na venkov za pratetičkou Opal. Za sestrami je poslán jejich bratr Ash, který má za úkol je přivést zpět.

Při návštěvě pratety Opal sestry zjistí, že ji někdo zabil a rozhodnou se její tělo v pytli ukrýt. Všichni teď čelí velkému nebezpečí. Kdo nebo co, zabil tetičku Opal? Je to nějaký upír? Někdo, kdo se jim mstí?

„Nemáme na výběr. Musíme je zabít.“

Po přečtení prvního dílu jsem se opravdu moc těšila na druhý. Musím říct, že tento díl se mi líbil víc.

Mary mi jako hlavní postava přišla velmi sympatická, ačkoliv jsem někdy přemýšlela nad tím, jestli má vůbec nějaký pud sebezáchovy, když upírkám dávala jasně najevo, že ví o jejich "vraždě".
Líbil se mi vývoj jejího vztahu s Ashem. Ash, ten je naprosto dokonalý. V prvním díle se mi ale vůbec nelíbil, ovšem tady, byl naprosto skvělý. Jeho hádání, narážky a pošťuchování s Mary se mi líbilo. Dokonce obdivuji Mary, že mu hned nepadla k nohám, ale držela si odstup, protože já bych to prostě nedokázala…
K upírkám Jeřabině, Poštolce a Nefrit mám neutrální vztah. V knize vyskytovaly velmi často, ale většinou v pozadí a nijak mě neoslovily.

Něco takového nikdy k žádnému klukovi necítila.

Děj plynul velmi rychle a četla jsem ho jedním dechem. Dlouho jsem přemýšlela, kdo zavraždil pratetu Opal a musím přiznat, že mě autorka dokázala na konci knihy zmást, proto bylo pro mě rozuzlení celého příběhu velkým překvapením.

Autorčin styl psaní se mi líbí. Dokáže skvěle vystihnout a popsat prostředí i pocity postav. Dokonce i popis upírů, kteří se neshoří na slunci, jí česnek a vadí jim pouze dřevo.

Druhý díl Říše temnot se mi líbil víc než ten první. Knihu určitě doporučuji, protože tato série vypadá opravdu slibně a mnohem lépe než Upíří deníky. Knize dávám zasloužených 5/5.(less)

Reading this book, I was surprised to see a character from the first book in it now acting as a main character. This is something that I find to be very creative of the author. Hola!!! Hace un buen tiempo no reseño... pero es... porque me estoy dando un maratón de libros para los tiempos de sequía, en otras palabras falta de tiempo y como imaginaran se me va el pequeño detalle de reseñarlos, lo sé lo sé, es lo principal!!! (y una olvidandolo ..berp)

Pues les cuento que 'Hijas de la noche' es un libro catalogado por mí como ‘light’ y bastante entretenido, además de ser tomo único cosa importante cuando no buscas esperar años para conocer si los protagonistas viven o mueren como suele suceder con las secuelas (a veces uno necesita un libro único no??).

Regresando al tema, les cuento que me sorprendió de grata manera el tono del libro porque supuse que sería bastante similar a lo que es “Crónicas vampíricas” ya que como bien saben o no lo saben son de la misma autora, yyyy no es así, no se parecen en nada diría yo (exceptuando lo del mundo de la noche). Este tomo de la trilogía Night World es bastante fresco, transmite liviandad (pero no cofundan liviandad con falta de contenido ¬¬) a mi parecer LJ. Smith dijo: “hare historias cortas y entretenidas” y fue exactamente lo que hizo :D, no revelo detalles del libro porque por ser bastante corto... sería practicamente resumir la historia.. cero gracia ¬¬

Los protagonistas en si mismos son algo confusos jejeje porque en un principio crees que son las 3 hermanas, después dices: 'aaaah debe ser una de las hermanas y un humano' y al final te dices… 'espera un momento'… 'al parecer los protagonistas son Ash y la humana???' xD

Les cuento ese detalle desde YA!... porque al menos a mi me parecio un toque humoristico por parte de la autora, el libro (según yo) carece de protagonistas porque simple y llanamente TODOS son protagonistas y eso mismo causa que nadie lo sea xD, en otras palabras; al ser una historia corta tiene la cantidad justa de personajes y por lo mismo te hace sentir que todos son importantes.... aunque bueno, si tuvieses que nombrar a alguien sería a Mary-Linnette porque es como el hilo conductor de los sucesos pero aun asi! sigo creyendo que no hay protagonistas 88.

Han visto las parodias a teleseries mexicanas?? En donde los personajes se abrazan pero no se dan un abrazo “normal”, o sea una persona mirando hacia el lado izq y el otro a la derecha, sino en cambio ambos miran hacia la camara??
Pues esa reacción seria una forma de explicar la relación entre los personajes del libro jejeje.. se entendió??

Otra cosa: Por lo que yo tengo entendido, cada libro de la trilogia es independiente, hay un hilo conductor pero siguen siendo independientes, por lo mismo se pueden leer en cualquier orden :D, (por eso digo que son tomos unicos)

As an adult reader I gave this a 2 star because some things were not very logical. The story was well written and as a teen I think I would have given it a 4 maybe even a 5. I would not mind letting my children read this book as the love relationships are based on emotions rather than physical appearance. The relationship between the characters are healthy, for example they do not have the male stalking the female or the female saying she is going to die without the male. For me, "Daughters of Darkness" is the one sour note in Smith's Night World series. It was the one book in the nine book series that I had to force myself to finish (I am obsessive about finishing everything I read).

For me, "Daughters of Darkness" is the one sour note in Smith's Night World series. It was the one book in the nine book series that I had to force myself to finish (I am obsessive about finishing everything I read).

The concept is interesting, but I feel it could have used better execution. As with all Night World books, the protagonist is female. Mary-Lynette is a human and unaware of the secret world of vampires, werewolves, and other spooky things that exist around her. She thinks she lives in the quietest, most boring town in the world, but that's all about to change when a series of startling events happens.

When the next door neighbor goes missing just as her three nieces arrive in town, and Mary-Lynette sees them burying something in the backyard, she's immediately suspicious. Unable to leave the mystery alone, she heads next door and meets the new arrivals, who further her apprehension about the disappearance of her neighbor. The girls remind her of predators, which is unsurprising as the girls are lamia, or born vampires.

The mystery of who killed the neighbor takes up a good chunk of the book, and in my opinion, is very over used. It just drags on too long, and every time there was a new twist in the whodunit, I kept thinking, "Okay, that's the end of it now...no, wait...there's more. Sigh."

Ash Redfern also makes an appearance in this book (some readers may remember him from "Night World #1: Secret Vampire," where he waylaid Poppy), and is a starring character along with his sisters. Initially he's on the hunt for the three sisters, who ran away from a vampire enclave. Ash is characterized as the ultimate vampire - humans are vermin and nothing more, to him. Mary-Lynette takes an immediate dislike to him when meeting him for the first time. And here's where the potentially interesting concept comes in - Ash and Mary-Lynette are soulmates, but unlike Smith's other couples, the two can't stand each other.

But something about this book just didn't do it for me. Maybe it was the overly drawn out murder mystery. Or maybe it was that the main character, Mary-Lynette, seemed dry. Or maybe even what seemed interesting - soulmates disliking each other - somehow doesn't fit in a series that's about finding your soulmate.

When Mary-Lynette, an amateur astronomer, genius, and protective older sister, goes outside one night to watch the Perseid meteor shower, she spies three girls burying what seems to be a body in her neighbor's backyard Her tireless investigation of the mystery plunges her into the Night World, a shadowy society of vampires, werewolves, and witches that operates just below the surface of our own. As with all Smith's human heroines, Mary-Lynette is destined (doomed?) to be the soulmate of one such creatures, the piggish but undeniably awesome vamp Ash.

Unlike Poppy of the previous volume, though, Mary-Lynette is unsettled, rather than overjoyed at the sudden appearance of her soulmate. She wavers between treating Ash dismissively and aggressively, finally settling on what seems like a healthy acceptance of this relationship. Again, she differs in Poppy here--rather than making the choice to be thrust into the Night World herself, she chooses to stay human. She even lets Ash go at the end of the novel, urging him to "give me time to finish growing up." Wisely, she reminds him, "I'm still in high school, Ash."

Maybe Daughters of Darkness lacks the wishy-washy romanticism of the previous volume, but it's a much better message for teenage girls--that they, and their partners, can be separate entities and still enjoy true love, that they can be independent and still fierce and fiercely lovable.(less)

I love this book so much it is one of my favourites out of the night world series; I like how it shows you a different side of ash instead of the evil cold hearted character he is made out to be in secret vampire.

I find it funny how everyone seems to be scared to stand up to ash because of his harsh personality but Mary-Lynette doesn't seem scared at all, it shows that the girl in the story is not some helpless fragile human being who needs saving from something all the time. Instead she is str...more

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I think I mostly remembered (view spoiler) and being disappointed in that so I completely wrote off the good stuff in this.

The opening was a good way to start, I liked that even while the girls were being threatened they were calm and speaking to each other (through telepathy) and did what they needed to do.

The Jade/Mark romance was cute, as was the Ash/Mary-Lynette romanc...more

i can't even tell you the last time i read this book, but i read it over and over in middle school and high school. ash redfern was my first fictional boyfriend! all fictional boyfriends since have been compared to him! but rereading this now really explains SO MUCH about me and my tastes.

Táto kniha bola ešte lepšia ako 1. časť a vyše polovicu knihu som nemohla uveriť, že to skutočne napísala Smithová. Nemala som dôvod nudiť sa.
V tejto sérii sa vyskytuje dosť častý jav nazývaný "Spriaznená duša". Nie je to klasická láska ani flirt, skôr príťažlivosť a dôvera v druhého, ktorá príde nečakane a nemôžete jej odporovať.
Taktiež ten pocit, že vás niečo sleduje v kríkoch a neviete či je to medveď, upír alebo zatúlaný súrodenec 8D No proste som sa často bála.

Ashove upírske sestry Nefrit, Haja a Jarabina (kde preboha chodí autorka na tieto divné mená?) boli pre mňa vedľajšie postavy. Nechceli sa riadiť pravidlami a zákonmi Ríše temnoty a tak uprchli k svojej upírskej tete, ktorá žila na vidieku, chovala kozy a bola upírskou vegetariánkou (papala len tie kozy). Neskôr sa premenili na také kríky pre Asha a Mary.
Mary-Lynnette (ďalšie kreatívne meno, čo vám poviem...) bola veľmi príjemnou a humornou postavou. Mala dobrý zmysel pre sarkastické vtípky 8D Takúto postavu by som od L. J. Smithovej vôbec nečakala. Mary mala iskru a odvahu a tiež brata Marka, ktorý sa potom stal už iba zamilovaným strojom. Nič pre mňa.
Keď sa všetkých 6 postáv + mačka zišli v jednej izbe, mne kniha pripadala trochu preplnená dôležitými postavami.
Polovicu knihy som zhltla za jeden večer a nebola časť, ktorá by ma nenudila. Buď som sa rozplývala nad Ashovou úžasnosťou alebo som sa bála kríkov. Strach z neznámeho vraha a scény, pri ktorých sa priblbo usmievate zaručili kvalitný príbeh, ktorý som si užila.
Svoje typy na vraha som menila ako ponožky a fakt som bola z konečného riešenia úplne obarená.
Aj keď autorku obdivujem, ako vie poskladať kúsky životov ľudí z Ríše temnoty a v každej časti série vytvoriť iné postavy, nemôžem si už nikoho obľúbiť. Preto si túto knihu vie užiť aj čitateľ, ktorý si 1. diel neprečítal. Úplne iný príbeh a iné postavy. V knihe sa však nachádzajú isté detaily, ktoré pochopí len ten, kto čítal aj 1. diel. Táto séria je jedna z tých lepších od L. J. Smithovej a ja vám knihu rozhodne odporúčam 8)(less)

This book not only can't stand the test of time (do teenagers even know what a Walkman is anymore?), but had a good number of flaws that would have been evident even at the time of writing.

This book not only can't stand the test of time (do teenagers even know what a Walkman is anymore?), but had a good number of flaws that would have been evident even at the time of writing.

For example, there's a scene quite early on in which two teenage boys start in on their attempt to rape three girls. When these girls reveal themselves to be vampires, one of them shouts, " How the freak did you do that? What the freak are you?" Freak? Really? A guy who's about to rape someone isn't going to play by PG language rules. If you can't have swearing in your story, don't try for swearing. Toning it down and substituting words just makes the whole situation look absurd, and is rather insulting to the intelligence of the reader.

Second example I can think of is when characters are wondering who might be the killer they're all looking for. They land on a character who was mentioned only once or twice before that, and in passing: Bunny Marten. They suspect Bunny because of her name; born-vampires tend to have names related to nature in some way. Bunny is obvious, of course, but one character then says, "And isn't a marten a kind of weasel?" Yes, it is, but the spelling of her last name was never mentioned, and it's not as though a more common spelling isn't "Martin." It may have the same root, but it's one heck of a leap, and a leap that only makes sense if the character suggesting it knows the odd spelling. Which she doesn't.

The story itself wasn't particularly engaging, either. Standard whodunnit mystery involving the death of a vampire. The killer turns out to be a mad werewolf who doesn't display any signs of actually being insane until he's triggered by jealousy, but apparently he was unhinged all along.

The only thing I really liked about this novel was the way to romance between Mary-Lynette and Ash was handled. The two are soulmates, which means that they're bound together whether they like it or not, and can't be truly happy without each other. Problem is that they don't get along, and outside of a few moments of teen lust, even admit that there's no way they can handle each other. But rather than refusing to acknowledge that, they agree to spend some time apart until they've both matured and come to grips with themselves and each other before exploring their connection any further. It was a refreshingly mature approach to the soulmate concept, and I really enjoyed seeing it.

Aside from a brief mention of a few characters in a later book, this is one that can be skipped over without losing anything of the series as a whole, and I highly recommend doing so. You don't miss much, and you get to spare yourself the trouble of reading a clumsy novel that was subpar even for a decade and a half ago. Overall, not really worth it.(less)

Horrible book cover - GREAT BOOK.

After getting over the initial disappointment that the story from book 1 wasn't going to be continued, I settled into this book. It has a definite Nancy Drew quality about it (Smith even jokes about What would Nancy Drew Do?!), but was super charming.

Daughters Of Darkness: I liked this installment alittle better I really like the soulmate principal and I love ML's Character. How she starts out meek and soft spoken and then all of a sudden this horried stranger comes into town that just brings the violence and tenasity (spell check lol) out of her. Navah I agreed with you WHOLEHEARTEDLY about this book!!
Twilight is a good book I think, and I DID enjoyo that saga...but Ash Redfern and Mary-Lynnette Carter are the ULTIMATE couple, like Romeo and Juliet and Angel and Buffy.

This is by far my favourite nightworld book just due to the fact of the character of Mary-Lynette. I was absolutely adore her especially as she has to put up with (view spoiler). I loved the redfern sisters, it was nice to see that not all the redferns were like the others, even though Ash is not what he seems. His character grew on me so much in this book after my absolute loothing of him in the Secret Vampire.
