Terrific understanding of the how and why the Separatists came to America. The influence of God in their decisions is very enlightening, to understand why they left Leyden. Found many captures in this book:
"So they committed themselves to the will of God and resolved to proceed."
"Hard work was not a virtue, it was a necessity."
"It is not with us as with other men whom small things can discourage, or small discontentments cause to wish themselves at home ag More...

This book is an "Of Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford for children. It is very accurate. The children didn't want me to stop reading. I gave it a five not because it was necessarily brilliantly written, but because the children were so interested and the facts correlate precisely with Bradford's book. I wanted them to know our country's Godly heritage and what people went through for religious freedom gleaned from Bradford's book without the many unnecessary details (at thei More...

In a way, this book depresses me because it reminds me of how far we have come, how weak we have become compared to those who gave their lives to create our "new world". But, more than that, it inspired me to live up to their sacrifice. I gained a desire to find my own mission and work to my death to give it life.

I really enjoyed learning about the pilgrims with the kids. This book showed their great faith and loyalty to God. A great read for Thanksgiving time.

Read it for school. Though interesting with facts I didn't know, it was a little babyish - for a different reading level, def.

Three stars.

We read this at the table and my four year old ate it up. Great lead-up to Thanksgiving.

A good overview of this period of American history, though a bit dry in the writing.

I had forgotten, or never learned, that the Pilgrims were orginally aiming for Virginia. Hindsight shows us that the harshness of the New England environment hardened these people to become the eventual Patriots behind the Revolution.

This is a great little read to acquaint your children with the settling of the Pilgrims. It features William Bradford, Miles Standish and Squanto. The book starts in England, then Holland and finally America. When we cycle back through again to American History we will read this.

Olivia will be reading it shortly for her current American History class.

Well written. We learned some things about Squanto we had never hear before, possibly because this book was written around 1950.

This is a quick read, but a great history of the Pilgrims. I love their dedication to their beliefs and their strength in following their sense of mission. They forged the way for the great country of America to be founded. It is up to us in this day of challenges to fight for the freedoms they came to this new land to obtain.
