The Boy Who Lost His Face by Louis Sachar
This is one of those books I am just surprised to come across on a challenged list. Not that I can't find something in it worth challenging, I suppose that I could (and in a minute, I will). But it's just such an *unimportant* book compared to the books that are generally challenged. This is the story of David, who wants to be popular, and therefore goes along with the crowd and does something not very nice. He realizes that he shouldn't have done t...more

David helps some boys from his school steeal a cane from Mrs. Bayfield, and old woman who the boys say is a witch. David doesn't feel comfortable stealing from an old woman, he just wants to be "cool". David has always been teased and he never stands up for himself. The boys steal the cane and Mrs. Bayfield shouts some gibberish at David which he believes is a curse. Soon after David starts to have a lot of bad luck, from dropping viles in science class to his pants falling down in fr...more

I loved this book! I wasn't expecting it to be nearly as engaging as it was. It's the ideal book for middle school boys and girls but especially those hard-to-reach boys. I loved that the book touched on so many issues that we don't normally talk about but should (ex: swearing, the middle finger, the word "nipple," etc.) as well as the classic coming-of-age issues like dealing with bullies, getting girls to like you, finding true friends, and so much more. The plot is very engaging and...more

This book is excellent. David is insecure, but I think he will start to become confident once he understands that the only person who needs to think and believe he is confident, smart, and handsome is himself.
But then again that is easier said than done when you are in middle school, and all you want is to be accepted by your peers-specially by the person who you think is the most gorgeous, and wonderful being 0n the face of the earth.

To begin with, this is my first book by Louis Sachar but I am happy to say it won't be the last. Although this book does include some minor cussing, in relation to the subject, it wouldn't be realistic if it didn't. I remember Middle School and there was lots of interesting language being used by kids trying to be cool so this book is authentic about that. David is struggling to learn the new cliques that has arisen with all his peers entering the new world of middle school. Besides learning his...more

Wildly funny!!It's ridiculous how everything happens. It starts from a simple thing that turns out disastrous. I recommend this book to those people out there who kept on bullying others. Watch out! And those who just want to bully for the sake of popularity or friends, better change yourselves or you'll be CURSED!

Childhood readers
One day, David Ballinger follows the cool kids from school to steal an old "witch"'s cane and succeeds but returns home with a "curse". As the days went by, David begins to see that the "curse" is taking action and everything that happened to the "witch" while her cane was being stolen was happening to David.
David has no choice but to return the "witch"'s cane in order to get rid of this "curse", even if he had to fight for it. In...more

First, a warning: this book has quite a bit of swearing in it. That's why it's on the Banned Books list. It also has a witch, which I'm sure doesn't help.
But this is a great book. It's funny and it's got some suspense and I really enjoyed it. In a way it's sort of disturbing how mean kids can be to each other, but they get through it and then they usually get to be adults who feel like they paid their dues. Sachar always comes through the good stuff. I mean, didn't you love Holes?

This is a very interesting and funny book. A typical group of kids terrorize an old widow. They pour lemonade over her, push her on the floor, and steal her snake engraved cane and flip her off. In return, the old widow curses only Ballinger, who is the main character because he was the one that flipped her off. So no everything that happened to her would now happen to him.

A brilliant book. i didn't want to put it down even for e second!!!! It was very well written and uses humour to emphasize the effect of the so called 'curse' in the end it all turns out to be David who is embarrasing himself which after being made to believe he is cursed is really rather funny. I very much enjoyed the book

If I had read this as a child, the swearing would've made me feel squirmy. Nonetheless, I was in David's predicament when I was in junior high. No, I wasn't under a witch's curse, but I was picked on very publicly, and I had no idea how to fight back. Having a book like this would have been galvanizing.

It was a very stressful story till halfway.
David, the leading character, was picked on, nevertheless his reaction was too calm.
But he was angered by knowing his brother's suffering, the story was rapidly progressing.
The last chapter has self-similiar surely like Sachar's work. I like it!

I can't recommend this book at all. I couldn't even finish it. The kids are terrible to each other, and the language they use is even worse. While not too many books can measure up to Holes, this one isn't even in the same ballpark.

This book was really good . . . I love the ending. Especially the way Louis Sachar makes things sound scary, when they really end up good in the end. You'll have to read the book . . . and find out where his face ended up.
