<default_description>"With the lover everyday life recedes," Roth writes—and exhibiting all his skill as a brilliant observer of human passion, he presents in Deception the tightly enclosed world of adulterous intimacy with a directness that has no equal in American fiction. At the center of Deception are two adulterers in their hiding place. He is a middle-aged American writer named Philip, living in London, and she is an articulate, intelligent, well-educated Englishwoman compromised by a humiliating marriage to which, in her thirties, she is already nervously half-resigned. The book's action consists of conversation—mainly the lovers talking to each other before and after making love. That dialogue—sharp, rich, playful, inquiring, "moving," as Hermione Lee writes, "on a scale of pain from furious bafflement to stoic gaiety"—is nearly all there is to this book, and all there needs to be.</default_description>

I rather liked this. The entire book consists of a series of monologues and dialogues between a man and his lover, between his past lovers (real or fictional?) and other people, and between the man and his wife. It's clever--a puzzle withina puzzle--if sometimes a little hard to follow. In the ...more...

At the end of this book I felt very pressured to ooh and ahh over how meta it was. The plot certainly was clever, but ultimately it seemed to be as much about Philip Roth's cleverness as about trust and deception.

Also, I got my copy from the library and there were a few pages in the mid...more...

Not essential Philip Roth, but damn good anyway. For those who claim he's a misogynist who stereotypes his female roles, check out how well he draws the female characters using ONLY dialogue here. There are maybe five non-dialogue sentences in the whole book. Nifty trick, and a quick read.
