Smallpox has been a disease long-eradicated by efficient vaccination. At its heyday, however, it was a scourge. With a mortality rate approaching 30%, an outbreak was hell to deal with. Albert Camus dealt with a similar scourge in his Plague. Although that was a significantly better novel, this novel is no slouch.
