So I picked this up in America because I wanted to read about Europe (France, in particular) while I was there. What can I say? Euro-trash soap opera sums it up nicely. This is yet another 500-pager that left me wondering why it wasn't cut down to a nice, clean 250 pages. Cut out the numerous food descriptions, the over-done, unnecessary, and dry descriptions of the character's clothes and jewels, and you're halfway there.

Fun high-drama escapism. This reminded me a lot of the mid- to late-80's novels that were very much products of the decade: high glamour, big money, full of scandal and intrigue. Think Jackie Collins and Sidney Sheldon. Taken for what it is, it's a delicious piece of brain candy. :)

My first Louise Bagshawe novel & it's not bad for chick lit. There's plenty of twists to keep you interested, with a dramatic ending. I can picture it as a tv mini series actually.

I have read this book many times, it is an enjoyable (if somewhat fluffy) beach-read. I cannot put this book down whenever I am reading it, regardless of reading it previously. Bagshawe does a good job with plot, characters and she paints a really lovely picture of the Jewelery industry. The continuous descriptions of beautiful jewels, beautiful people, and beautiful Parisian society make the book a whimsical, dreamy read.
The Good: Plot-Pure escapism! Captivates again and again.

I had this laying around and started reading it out of desperation, but it's surprisingly good. Don't let the horrid name and cheesy cover fool you. The story is one of intrigue and glamour, revolving mainly around Sophie, whose husband built up a fine jewelry empire in Paris and then vanished without a trace. In an attenpt to save the family business and her 19-year old son's inheritance, Sophie uncovers a scandal. The plot is told from the perspective of five or six different characters, most ...more

Sparkles wasn't quite as intense as I had expected from the jacket cover but it was good. I think I learned more about fashion and jewelry than the author intended but...it is good to get something out of a novel. Anyway, it is a good read and worth a look if you need a sort of mindless novel. i was sick this week and therefore able to read 300 pages of the book pretty quickly. Give it a shot if you need an escape.

Meh.
Some of her early books (e.g. Venus Envy) were solid, comic, escapist nonsense. Her later ones are formulaic and she's continued to write for an audience which is in its early 20s, while her interests have changed. It doesn't feel even vaguely convincing anymore.
I won't be reading another of her books.

This is a fun book with a nice little twist - especially if you like jelwery and peering into the world of the wealthy. I only gave it 2 stars, but I would recommend reading the book just for the fun of it. Honestly though, it could have been about 100-pages shorter!

This isn't at all the type of book I would normally read, but I had to read it for work and it's surprisinly good for "chick lit"

This is a book I enjoyed because it took place in Paris and is a good family business/love story drama.

An excellent mindless read, reminiscent of classic Steele.
