I'm sort of addicted to the Lord Alex Hawke series. They're quirky spy-story page-turners with fun characters and more gadgets and machines than Bond himself. They're fast reads, but still give you something to think about as the plots are crazy incarnations of current events.
The latest Hawke adventure pits him against a self-styled Russian tsar scheming to bring back the great Soviet Union. There are fantastic new air ships! Antique motorcycles! Fast boats! Beautiful girls! Brain-sh...more

My stepmother occasionally gives me books, and while they're often not exactly my cup of tea, I've learned to stop for a minute & realize that my stepmother is the reason I still have a job. She's one of the only people I know who buys books! She doesn't take them out of the library or obtain them secondhand at the Strand -- no, she'll be at a store shopping for other, completely unrelated things, and suddenly be like, "Hmm, that looks like a cool book, I think I'll buy it." Totally...more

If you are into James Bond type spy mysteries/novels, this is as good as any recent, and there are a lot of them out there (I'm barely scraping through "Stone Cold" by Baldacci right now).
The author is better than most in plot, conflict, character development, and descriptions, but a little too heavy on decor and architecture.
He even adds some interesting quotes such as Mark Twain's comment about Bermuda, "You can go to heaven, I'm staying right here."...more

This is a new author to me. I love this book. He is an excellent writer and kept me involved throughout. International intrigue, spy thriller. Alex Hawke is his "James Bond". Glenn Beck said this of this book: "Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum meets Steven King." This is his most current book. I will now go back and read his other books starting with "Hawke", then "Assassin", "Pirate", and "Spy". He also has a book for teenagers just ...more

Good read. The story fits very well into to today's current events in the world and the ongoing USA/Russian ongoing struggles. Portrayal of how Russian people think, live and want to be governed is not PC i.e. it’s accurate. A few story line stretches to tie events together, but it adds to the story by being creative with what and where past Russian leaders have ended up after “retiring from office”.

Call it my indulgence, my guilty pleasure: the thriller set in modern political turmoil. Ted Bell has been turning out a number of these the last few years and buried within the techno-porn and the extremely competent good guys and the extremely wicked bad guys there are real kernels of observation that make you mull. This is a great book for a long flight.

I actually didn't finish it. I got to the 3rd scene with explicit sex/nudity and I stopped. If you're into action/romance novels, this one would be for you. I've read and enjoyed the others in this series, so to say I'm disappointed that he didn't think the story was good enough to forgo the pornography is putting it lightly.

I love thrillers, and Ted Bell is one of my favorite authors for this genre. This involves Russia's desire to become a world power through the use of computers and technology; Putin even figures into the plot although he is not the one who wishes to be the resurrected Tsar. The books is pure fun.

I eagerly awaited this new Hawke...so far, it doesn't disappoint...the West's interests are threatened, beautiful women and a trusty sidekick all weave a page turner...parts of the book are torn from the front pages of European papers...decent background on a rising threat of renewed Russian nationalism...Hawke's love interest again proves to be problematic...a fun ride!!!

Very suspensful. I'm and Alexander Hawke fan. "Tsar" is a book that is very well written from beginning to end. I just hope that one day Lord Hawke gets his heart fulfilled.

Quite formulaic and James Bondish. It had great potential and I was expecting a lot more. Cannot compare to his first NYT bestseller because this is my first Bell reading.

A typical spy story whenever you have the evil Russians involved who want to take over the world. Maybe some day authors can find some other villians to write about.

Decent spy book, had good current theme of Russia building up their power and reclaiming land. Not as crazy complex as some of Clancy's books, which is good for me.

Overall a pretty good story. It took a little bit to get going but once it did the action was well paced. I liked it.

Spy adventure book that is a fun read. Has action, adventure, romance, culture, and more in it. Plot was well devised and loosely, very loosely based on some historical/recent events.
