Lucy Parker is having a nightmare of a day. She gets fired from her job as a teacher and gains a reputation for being sexually involved with her students AND discovers her boyfriend of three years having sex with another woman in her house. So when she wins the lottery, she takes the lump sum and gets out of dodge and heads to Palm Beach. Oddly enough, Lucy notices right away how her relationships with family and friends changes overnight once the news gets out.

Sometime I think winning the lott...more

This book was light and fun but was not entirely without substance. The book begins on the worst day of the main character's life. Lucy is fired from her job, her car breaks down, her long-term relationship ends.....everything that can go wrong, does go wrong. On her way home, she buys a lottery ticket and ends up winning $87M. This sets off a series of events that will change Lucy's life forever (for better or worse). Lucy is a great character, interesting and complex and real. I enjoyed watchi...more

Okay, I know I said I was going to do some more grown-up books and give the chick-lit a rest...but I lied. However, this book was much better than those I've been reading. IT actually had some plot, heart and no lurid sex scenes (hooray!). The language was a little strong for my personal tastes, but not absolutely horrid. Like I said, it had heart and a good overall message and I enjoyed that. I've kind of been fascinated with lottery winners since watching a True Hollywood Story on them last Ch...more

This book was fun, a top-notch summer read! Protagonist Lucy goes from having the worst day of her life (fired from teaching due to a student's lies, car broken down again, and to top it all off, boyfriend caught in the act of cheating), to winning a huge lottery jackpot! To escape the press people who have taken up residence on her front lawn, Lucy flees to Palm Beach, where she attempts to live under the radar while spending over the top. I was nervous this book would become excessively shallo...more

I gave this book three stars because it was easy-to-read, easy-to-follow, and the main character was a teacher (like me).

The book follows the story of a woman named Lucy, who becomes wrongly accused of misconduct. A few other significant events occur in her life and she finds herself trapped in a media nightmare, with few people she can trust. For awhile, she runs away from her problems, but finally has to come to terms with who she has become and how different she is from the person she used t...more

Coming off of The Time Traveler's Wife, I needed something easy and fluffy. This was both. Upon the recommendation of a friend of a friend, I started reading Whitney Gaskell's books several summers ago (this recommender is friends with the author). While never thought provoking or deep, her books are definitely readable and generally enjoyable; often the premises are more believable than the premise of this one (high school teacher gets accused of sexual misconduct, gets fired, walks in on her l...more

I loved the book at the beginning. The storyline was new and fresh and the pace was quick and attention-grabbing. But the story grew more and more predictable after a while, until the book culminated with the classic girl ends up with the guy who was not the better catch but - surprise - has a huge, secret redeeming quality that made her choice right all along. The writer also pulled a move that gets on my nerves with a lot of TV shows and books: the main characters are the only lovable ones. T...more

I'm sure it's the English teacher in me that's all freaked out by the premise of this book, but I have to say that the range of emotions I felt ran the spectrum! After being accused of sexual harassment by one of her students upset over a bad grade, Lucy Parker's life only goes from wretched, to unspeakable. She walks in on her live-in boyfriend with another woman, loses her job (obviously), and is being hounded by the press. In the midst of it all, she flippantly buys a lottery ticket that land...more

Overall a fun, fairly light read. A good chick-lit novel. I enjoyed that the story was a bit of a departure from the standard boy meets girl, girl falls for boy, drama occurs, things work out and they end up happily ever after.

Lucy is a sweet, if a bit naive young woman who succeeds in having the worst possible day and at the same time perhaps the best day of her life all rolled into one. I enjoyed reading about the exciting, dramatic and yet sometimes sad and painful whirlwind that was Lucy's l...more

I liked the premise of a woman winning the lottery on the worst day of her life. She loses her job and her career when a student falsely accuses her of sexual harrassment. On her way home, her car breaks down. She decided to walk the rest of the way home, stops at a gas station and buys water and two lottery tickets. She gets home only to find the boyfriend who recently moved in with her having sex with a fake-breasted woman in their bed. She throws him out of the house and gets drunk. She wakes...more

This is another fun and enjoyable chick lit from one of my favorites, Whitney Gaskell, and although it wasn't my favorite of hers, it was definitely fun reading (despite the major printer error which left several too light to read pages throughout the book).

Imagine that everything in your life has gone bad--you're fired from your job for the worst reason, then you walk in on your boyfriend of several years, with another woman, on your own bed. And then when you've hit rock bottom, imagine winni...more

Another cute story from Whitney Gaskell.

See what happens when an everyday girl, one who has just been fired from her job and given her cheating boyfriend the heave-ho, wins the Florida lottery. It's a cute tale of a girl just trying to make her way in life, find happiness, and do good. It takes a while for her to realize the 'do good' part though but the story wraps up in a pretty little bow by the end.

There's love, intrigue, hi-jinks...you know, the stuff that most good chick lit stories (sho...more

Lucy's having the day from hell, her car breaks down, she gets fired from her job for a false allegation of sexual dalliance with a student and comes home only to walk in on her boyfriend of three-years having sex in their bed with another woman. Her luck changes when she hits it big that night in the lottery, or does it? A very entertaining, quick read.

This was my first Whitney Gaskell book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was full of a variety of emotions, all expected and loved about a good chick-lit. I was very impressed with Lucy's character throughtout the story. Would love a sequel to see where she where she ends up next.

This wasn't by any means a literary masterpiece, however, I got such a kick out of this book. I read it while on vacation in Florida so it of course had more meaning as the story takes place there. It was the perfect beach read!! Grab it, go to the beach and enjoy!!!
Sara
this one's a ridiculously quick read. i finished it in about 2 round trips on the metro (which is about 2 hours total).
if you like whitney gaskell, this one won't disappoint. a silly story, but it's entertaining... which seems to sum up what i read these days.

Intriguing story, enjoyed the storyline and characters, BUT the language and "f" words are very off-puttin. Why do authors feel a need to throw that into their stories? It lowers the class of the characters and cheapens the novel. I don't get that!
Ana
This was a fun look at the old adage "be careful what you wish for". It was filled with all the elements of a good romantic comedy -- makeover, posh locations, and several tempting men.

If you're in need of a light beach read, this is just the ticket.

With going through money problems of my very own, I decided to read this book to see what it would be like if my dreams came true and I won the lottery. Now granted, I wouldn't have a student claiming sexual harassment that would ruin my career, but this book does make a great story to show how money can change lives, friendships, and relationships. This book has some great laugh out loud moments and the relationship dynamic between Mal and Lucy had me laughing everytime they were together in a...more

This book was a quick read, I read it almost in one day on an airplane. I'd give it 2.5 stars, but rounded up to 3. (goodreads, please do .5 stars!) The storyline seemed to go in circles sometimes, other than that, decent book!
Aimee Seligstein
For such a ridiculous premise, I enjoyed reading this light, breezy fare. The writing was decent, and I finished pretty quickly. The only negative is that I think the author was a little lazy on some of the details,
Beth
My favorite chick lit author. As usual, a relatable set of characters who I care what happens to with an interesting plot and storylines. Fun, fast read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Interesting exploration of how money influences all kinds of relationships.

This book was GREAT!! It had me laughing out loud all through it and I didn't want it to end.

It's about a woman who wins the lottery on the worst day of her life...

I finished this morning - it took me 3 1/2 days to read it :-) A great fun summer read! I really liked her characters and got into the book easily. It's a fun one!

People think money will solve all of their problems. Winning the lottery may not be the solution at all...who can you trust and where can you go?
Sara
I thought this book was a little predictable, except for one thing that I will not mention as to not *spoil*. Overall, enjoyable and light read.
Tina
About how the lottery can change you life. Nice easy read to fit my mood. I like this author's style. Good characters and plot-line.
Erin
This was a cute novel about what it would be like to win the lottery on the worst day of your life. Amusing and hard to put down.

Growing up, Whitney Gaskell always wanted to become a writer. Then for some unknown reason, she went to law school. TABLE FOR SEVEN is Whitney's eighth book. She also writes the Young Adult GEEK HIGH series under the name Piper Banks.
