Half-demon Jessie Garrett’s battles seem endless. Adding to her struggles, she must defend her life against a group of vampires who consider her a threat to their existence.
Held captive on a remote island with both Drake and Jeremy protecting her, she is tested in ways she’s never imagined. Jessie fights back; only her actions do more harm than good. The group offers her a choice, but no matter what she decides, her life will change forever.
OMG, I don't know how to rate this book. I adored this book, but OMG, it did NOT end the way that I wanted it to. Would I have felt differently if I had read the first 2 in the series?!? OMG, I am heartbroken. Is a 4th coming? Please say yes...*whimpering* I will have a full review up within the next day or so. I need to recover a bit first....
Full review reposted from my Smitten with Reading blog...
My Review: This is such a hard book for me to rate. Not because it wasn't good...NO, this book was awesome!! The problem, Jessie found HEA with the wrong guy!?!? This book features Jessie as the heroine who has 2 guys, Drake and Jeremy, both in love with her. Don't worry, I am not going to spoil it for you. I won't tell you who she ends up with. It was just not the person that I wanted her to end up with...LOL! Now, admittedly, this is book #3 in this series and I have not read the other 2 so I reserve the right to change my mind (and yes, I went and bought books #1 and #2 immediately after finishing this one) after reading the other two. It may turn out that I am completely wrong about which one is the perfect guy for her after reading all the background.
Regardless of what happened in the past two books, this one was wonderful. Jessie has been called before the vampire council because they just found out that she can send souls to hell. Drake, her vampire boyfriend, and Jeremy, her demon friend, are both going with her to try to make sure that she stays safe. To complicate matters, they both are in love with her. She is in love with Drake, but drawn to Jeremy.
This novel was action-packed from the very beginning. Jessie is tough, although she is scared to death about what is going to happen with the vampire council. Jeremy is training her to fight better, but as a demon, everything he does for her comes with a price. This price is that she has to break up with Drake. Drake is a vampire in love with Jessie. He's doing everything in his power to keep her safe. He has been politicking the vampire council behind the scenes to rule in her favor and has agreed to Jeremy's terms for training her. Both of these guys love her and will do anything to keep her safe including working together, although they can't stand each other.
This is a hot, sensual novel with a lot of emotional impact. It was an absolutely fabulous read and I think that I can easily say that I have a new favorite author!
It's hard trying to lead a normal life and do the right thing when you've got centuries old vampires threatening to end your existence. It's even harder when the two men bound and determined to protect you don't get along – at all.
Jessie remains committed to the training agreement with Jeremy in preparation for the showdown with the VETOV. She's determined to not lose sight of the end goal, which is the fresh start with Drake they both desperately seek. However, between the trainings, paranormal investigations, working the day job, and fending off Jeremy's advances, Jessie quickly becomes exhausted and frustrated. What's left of her relationship with Drake is strained and tested at every turn. Unfortunately, things go from bad to worse as decisions are made that will force Jessie to give up the dream of ever having a normal life.
Ms. Abshire delivers another outstanding hit with this third installment to the Soul Catcher Series!
Jessie's still slightly impulsive, yet shows more maturity in considering the consequences to her decisions before making them. Throughout the story Jessie is consistently tempted, propositioned, and tested. It all leads to an exciting, thrilling, and fast-paced experience for the reader to enjoy. There are several new twists to the storyline that will have your emotions completely strung-out.
The love between Jessie and Drake is intense and undeniable, but the chemistry between Jessie and Jeremy is nevertheless growing stronger. There are positives and negatives to both men that Ms. Abshire fully exploits to keep the reader's from fully committing to either. I might be mostly “Team Drake”, but I won't deny the appeal of “Team Jeremy” either.
Every scene is full either fierce action or poignant moments all leading to a dramatic ending that will leave you hungry for more. There's absolutely no telling where the next in the series will take us and I'm already anxious to get my next Drake fix. This series is a must read for any paranormal romance fan!
Review courtesy of Romance Junkies (a recommended read):
In the third novel of the series, FIGHTING EVIL, we pick up right where we left off with book two, CATCHING AN EVIL TAIL. Jessie, half-demon/half-human is training with a friend, Jeremy to ready herself for what is about to go down. She has two weeks until she has to meet with the VETOV, a powerful vampire association. They are going to determine whether one of her kind is a threat to them or if she will become their ally. Fortunately for Jessie, her boyfriend/vampire, Drake will be there as well as her friend/demon, Jeremy to give her much-needed support.
Upon arrival to the so-called meeting place, Jessie knows she is in trouble. It seems that they are going to be staying on an island, cut off from the outside world. Jessie is angered by the turn of events, but there is nothing she can do about it. She will just have to play nice until they let her go. It does not take long to realize that someone desperately wants her out of the picture. A confrontation may just put her in a bad position. How can she worm her way out of this new problem?
Mary Abshire's FIGHTING EVIL is the third novel in her groundbreaking SOUL CATCHER series, and it is a welcome addition to the urban fantasy genre. I have been waiting for a book to make it to the top of my list of favorites this year, and FIGHTING EVIL takes the cake. FIGHTING EVIL has it all: tons of action, kick-butt characters, and last but certainly not least, passionate encounters with two hot, alpha men. What more could a gal ask for?! FIGHTING EVIL is such a thrilling read that it had me on edge more than once. Jessie has to face a lot of hard choices, and I have to give her credit for her ability to remain strong throughout. I cannot wait to see what happens on Jessie's next adventure.
I loved it! I took a break from everything else I was doing (reading/studying) and I was not disappointed! I will post a more prolific review as time permits. However, I can NOT wait to see what Mary comes up with next!
Continuing the Soul Catcher series, it would be most enjoyable to have read Soul Catcher #1 and #2 first. They are very good, and provide an interesting and necessary background of the characters and their relationships. This book starts just after Book 2, with the summons to the VETOV just a week away. Jessie is training in self-defense with Jeremy, having bloody, painful sessions. Drake and Jeremy have vowed to protect her, but she's afraid the vampires will overpower them and drink her blood like fine wine. After two weeks of intense training with Jeremy, they leave for the VETOV meeting. Unexpected tests, a knife attack, and near-death for Jessie when she hears her father tell her to go with Jeremy, not Drake. The vampires have their own agenda, not one Jessie, Jeremy, and Drake can agree with. It's time for desperate measures.
This series just gets better and better. Mary Abshire weaves a tale of romance, suspense, and action and this 3rd book in the series has all of that in spades. Jessie finds herself in another dangerous situation with ancient vampires plus being pulled back and forth between a demon and a vampire - Jeremy who is always there and Drake who always shows up just in time with the perfect thing to say. I thought I knew exactly what choice I wanted her to make, but by the end of the book, I wasn't so sure anymore. I can't wait to see where the next book takes her.
What will happen when Jessie, Jeremy, and Drake will go to VETOV? For sure nothing will be that easy when if comes as always with this trio. They need to deal with their feelings, love, distrust, death of a friend, intrigues of ancient vampires that would do anything to deal with Jessie's powers that can be very dangerous. I was sometimes irritated with Jessie due to her feelings toward Drake and Jeremy - she couldn't still choose. Will she manage till the end of the book? Beside this very enjoyable read.
I loved this book. Talk about being stuck between a rock & a hard place. This books fits that saying perfectly. I have to admit that although I like both Drake & Jeremy, I can't help but think she ended up with the wrong guy. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Things are getting intense for Jessie. Training with Jeremy to prepare for meeting the vampires. The strain of faking the breakup with Drake is getting to them both and making Jeremy suspicious. So much heartbreak and love with these three.
Jessie is stuck in the middle between Drake and Jeremy. She loves Drake and would do anything to be with him. She cares about Jeremy but he irritates the hell out of her, especially when he tries his luck with her. ALOT. When she has to prove to a bunch on vampires she isn't a danger to them all things go to hell. She goes through much heartbreak and stress. It angers me that vampires are threatened by her sending evil souls to hell, well if your not evil what's the problem. She sees a new side to Jeremy when they are confined to certain areas and he comes through for her alot. Even though he makes decisions she doesn't understand. I do not envy Jessie right now, but she is strong and will fight for what she wants.
I loved Drake for Jessie from the start with the chemistry between them. But since the vampires have got involved in can't help but feel a little angry towards Drake. The decisions he makes on behalf of her is a bit odd. Vampire politics not good. I do believe he loves her as he does try protecting her and get her out of this mess. His jealousy over Jeremy being around Jessie is kind of hot. It must be hard to watch the woman you love in danger and having to hide that they love each other. What is in store for them next.
Jeremy, oh Jeremy I love and hate him at the same time. His weird love for Jessie and dedication to keep her safe is lovely and frustrating to read. I'm actually wanting him to win her in this one. Yeah he makes some really random and unbelievable decisions sometimes but I can't help but oh I like the annoying demon. And how he proves he loves Jessie and will one day be with her at the end is so lovely. I can't wait to see how this all pans out in the next book.
This book will keep you entertained on the edge of you seat to see what happens. You will laugh, be frustrated and definately cry, and probably get very angry and want to punch alot of the characters.
My heart hurts. There is so much drama and negative, angst-y emotions running through this book that I feel kind of numb now that it's over. I love that Jessie is stepping into her power more and more with every book in this series. She has all of these physical abilities that she didn't know how to use to their fullest extent and now she's learning what to do with them. Both Drake and Jeremy are showing how much she means to them. I can understand why she's had such a hard time sticking to a decision. It is certainly not the ending I was expecting and I'm more anxious than ever to read the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for honest review.**
Lesson of the day? Don't trust ancient vampires!
I should have known better than to pick up this book without clearing my schedule first. The moment I got back into the story, I just couldn't stop reading and finished the rest of the series in less than two days. While I'm sad that it's over, I couldn't be any happier about how it ended! You'll see what I mean when you read my review of the last book. But no spoilers here!
In this installment, we pick up where the story left off in book number two. Jeremy has agreed to teach Jessie how to fight and his price was steep. She had to break off her relationship with Drake. And even though she doesn't really drop Drake from her life, she doesn't entirely trust him anymore, either. So Jeremy will accompany Jessie to her upcoming meeting with the vampires. Just in case.
The aforementioned meeting with the VETOV was full of surprises and even intense heartbreak, in more ways than one. I was not prepared for how quickly the tables turned. It seemed that no one was to be trusted and Jessie faced more than one nemesis on the island.
The pacing was slow at times but I didn't mind. The calmer moments were probably my favorite as none of my beloved characters were maimed or stabbed during meal times. Well, usually...
In closing... One trip changes everything and leaves me needing more! Four suns and on to the next book!
Fighting Evil by Mary Abshire is the third book in the Soul Catcher Series. As the book begins, Jessie and Drake are not together, so that she can fulfill her bargain with Jeremy, who has two weeks to teach her to fight and to defend herself prior to the meeting with VETOV. She is desperate to hold onto the bargain, but she is also desperate to spend some time with Drake. As they prepare to meet with VETOV, they know that anything can happen. After flying to a small island in Europe and being taken to a secret fort, the meetings begin. What will happen? Will they kill Jessie because she can send souls to hell, or will they try to harness her power for their own use? Will Jessie finally give in to Jeremy or will she stay with Drake? This book is full of questions that have to be answered before any of the three can continue with their lives.
One again, this is another terrific book. It certainly didn't disappoint me. As I've gotten to know the characters throughout this series, I find that I'm having trouble putting the books down. The characters are well developed, especially the main characters and some of the secondary characters like Dani, Jessie's roommate. There were several twists in this book that I didn't see coming, and at the end when Jessie is weighing her options, I was on pins and needles while waiting for the end result.
There were a few typos and a few other errors in the book, but even though that is one of my pet peeves, it didn't distract me much, and don't detract from the story. I highly recommend this book and this whole series for anyone who likes to read contemporary paranormal romance and action.
I voluntarily requested a copy of this book from the author with the intention of voluntarily submitting an honest review, which I have done here.
Wow, wow, wow!!!!! What can I possibly say about this book, other than it was absolutely freaking amazing!!! So many events happen in this book that will make your head spin and be OMG did that really happen? Jessie is one of my favorite characters I have read about in all the books I've read. She's strong, independent and can be stubborn at times. But, that is what makes her so great! She still battling the love triangle with Drake and Jeremy. Because Jeremy is relentless and refuses to give up hope on her. At least until the end, when he finally decides to walk away. Though her meeting with the VETOV was interesting and so many drastic events had happen. And it makes me sad for her loss of someone close to her. I do hope she gets her revenge in the coming books. This series is by far one of my favorites I have read in a long time! And I can't wait to read more! Great job on this book Mary Abshire!!
This fourth book finally doesn't have Jessie kissing anyone who comes around her. Might be because she doesn't like any male around her in this installment. Jeremy is after her like a horny adolescent in the most obnoxious of ways, while Drake is running off pouting. The drama is interesting. Jessie again is impulsive and doesn't know how to behave like an adult and have a conversation with someone before making life changing decisions. She is a character who annoys the heck out of me. Even so I can still enjoy the story. I was given this story for an honest review and this is mine.
Jessie has done some growing up. I found some maturity in her this time around. Of course her life is still in danger. Of course she has her protectors. Of course they don't care for each other. Of course she has come to the end of her rope. Things are just piling up and over. No matter all that Jessie goes through this was a fast pace, thrilling, intense, read with twist, hiccups, and emotion grabbing moments. Drake still has me changing my underwear and having very vivid and pleasurable dreams. Jeremy his growing on me. I just wonder what part he will play in the final scheme of things.
You can't go wrong reading this series. Suspense, romance, steamy, its here. The blurb covers it way better than I ever could, so I just share my thoughts, opinions. I so dislike Jeremy. Doesn't matter how much Mary (author) shows his redeeming qualities, etc. No. Although I have a feeling we are slowly being led to the other side. (shaking head). I did feel like the ending, was a little abrupt, that is my opinion. I volunteered to review this book, because I love the series!
In the third book of the Soul Catcher series we are introduced into the world of the vampires. I love how Mary introduces a lot of new characters in each book. As always her story is filled with suspense, mystery, romance, and great action scenes. I enjoyed how this book ended and can't wait to read the next one.
