3.5 stars. While I am a big fan of superheroes, I have not read a whole lot of Green Lantern material so I may have liked this more than some fans who may have found inconsistencies in the description of the "power ring" mythos. For me, I thought the description of the rings power being based on "strength of willpower" of the user was excellent. In general, I am not a fan of "unlimited" powers and so liked the description of how "taxing" the use of the rin

I actually always thought GL was kinda cool, but never read any of the comics. So, I decided, this mid 2000's relaunch by DC and Geoff Johns was as good a time as any to indoctrinate myself to Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, especially in "light" of the forthcoming movie.

For those following Hal Jordan's career you know he did some horrible things and without going into details I'll leave it at that though there are spoilers further below. I found the artwork engaging for an action piece with some of the frames overlapping and almost exploding to one another in an interesting fashion. You get the Justice League showing up as it takes on epic proportions, previous and current Green Lantern heroes and even a few people from the Justice Society (a la Earth 1, Earth

Green Lantern: Rebirth was my first real detailed introduction into a character that I had long been interested in. I was aware of the basics, and finally decided to take the plunge. I had avoided it before as I generally stuck to graphic novel one-shots or self-contained stories such as The Killing Joke, Watchmen, and Filth. I was just a bit worried about the expense and dedication needed to follow a continuous saga. After buying and reading Green Lantern: Rebirth, I had nothing to worry about.

Johns is getting better as he plays longer in the DC sandbox - the bombast quotient is lowering, the action:monologue ratio is improving. As a relaunch goes, this shapes up early into some interesting twists and mysteries.
I can't say I'm in any way invested in Hal Jordan staying dead, but I *am* always disappointed when the comics bring someone back from the dead without a really good goddamn reason and explanation. Half the time (as here) it feels like the writer is completely throwing out the More...

Ok, so there are some interesting things going on in this volume, which restores the silver-age Lantern, Hal Jordan to his rightful place as GL. Thanks to 20 years of bizarre continuity ups and downs (going crazy! death! becoming the embodiment of vengeance!), Johns is having to do some serious heavy lifting in not only making Hal look good again, but clearing the deck to let Hal ring sling again. For his work, Johns should be commended as he pretty much pulls off some crazy retcons and enough h

I think I'll start with, I didn't hate this.
This is my first straight up Green Lantern comic that I've read written by Geoff Johns who penned the amazing Blackest Night/Brightest Day events.
After Blackest Night, I found I enjoyed Green Lantern and Co. a bit more than I expected, so when a friend gave me this as a recommendation...I took it.
I don't know that enjoy Green Lantern as much when reading just GL. I suppose I get why he has a fan base and this was a More...

After Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier sparked my interest in the Green Lantern a few years ago, I always wanted to read more but didn't know what. Then I read about Johns' semi-reboot of the Green Lantern series, Rebirth and decided it would be a good place to jump in. And it was.
Although not a reboot like ... uh... Nolan's Batman films vs the Burton and Schumacher ones (a clean start), Johns did want to put new life in the series and particularly Hal Jordon's Green Lantern character. But he d More...

Pros: The author's explanation of and story for Parallax, the author's description of each GL's unique style in using the power rings, Green Arrow using a power ring, Hal Jordan "passing the torch" to Kyle Rayner.
Cons: Failing to find Batman's voice and writing him as strident, cynical treatment of Spectre, bad treatment of relationships amongst John Stewart, Alan Scott, Batman, Hal Jordan, and the Justice League.

First, a little back-story. In 1994, Hal Jordan, the second and best-loved Green Lantern, went insane and became the super villain Parallax. This move was roundly decried by fans, but DC Comics did little about it, moving the series forward with a new character. Thus, a whole generation was born and grew up not knowing the man many consider the true Green Lantern (as evidenced by the recent feature film). This was remedied by Geoff Johns in 2004 via the miniseries which has also been collect

I'm not really used to "cosmic" scale superheroes (although I guess Hellboy could be considered cosmic), but I really liked the way this story played out.
At the same time, I've never been very fond of the big superhero groups such as the Justice League/Society or the Avengers: I can tolerate each superhero's backstory by itself (imagine a world where...), but throwing all these backstories into the same universe seems to require a much larger leap of faith. As much as I give firm approval to anyone and anything punching Batman in the face, I wanted to enjoy this more than I did.
Granted - it does have some great moments. The big Sinestro battle was appropriately epic, but some of the artwork (especially one of the Lanterns actively *posing* like an artist while using his ring to help defeat Parallax) was hideous.
I think I may keep going with this in future. A lot of it may have been the starting point where I was. Not so More...

EXCELENT! If you want to read a good comic book that can bring you back on your feet no matter what, HTEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING READING MY REVIEW??? GO AND GET THIS DARN PIECE OF LITERATURE!
If you are not familiar with the story, it doesn't really matter, the whole story is very clear (although the full potential comes to those familiar with the character).
If I still couldn't get you into reading this... picture it this way:

A very nice 're-introduction' to Green Lantern for myself. Rebirth collects a 2004-2005 mini-series written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Ethan Van Sciver (really good artist). I have to admit that I know very little about Green Lantern and am reading this graphic novel as a way of getting a better understanding of the character before the movie is released in 2011...You do know that there will be Green Lantern movie.
The story arc is really about the resurrection and redemption of H More...

A well crafted and clever (How's that working out for you? Being clever?) ret-con of the whole "Hal Jordan goes crazy, tries to destroy the universe" fiasco, bringing the original Silver Age hero back to life and stature. The art by Ethan Van Sciver is great, and the script is fast paced and entertaining throughout. The only problem is; Kyle Rayner is a much better character than Hal Jordan. Who would be a more appropriate bearer of a wish granting ring? An ordinary guy, an artist

I hadn't read any Green Lantern before. Crazy cosmic superhero sci-fi stuff--the source material seems pretty hokey, but this miniseries is very well done. I'm glad they included a quick summary of important characters and their stories to date; I never would have been able to follow along without it.

If you haven’t read any Green Lantern graphic novels this one will make absolutely no sense at all. It starts out with Hal dead and the spectre inside of him. The art was not my favorite of the Green Lantern series. The characters look so different in this one than in all of the other books. I prefer the artist for Blackest Night. I’d definitely suggest reading the stories previous to this one in order to understand what’s going on here. If you aren't up on everything in Green Lantern's world y

I became a fan of Green Lantern because of Emerald Twilight several years ago with the introduction of Kyle Rayner. When I heard that DC was bringing back Hal Jordan, I was skeptical. I didn't buy the original 6 issue mini series and waited until the graphic novel came out. When I read it, I was hooked. The writing by Geoff Johns is excellent and have been a fan since GL: Rebirth.

4.5 stars
Art: Ethan Van Sciver's drawings are flawless. So many details beautifully drawn! Definitely 5 stars material.
Story: Written by Geoff Johns, the story of Hal Jordan's redemption. For a newbie like me it was slightly confusing here and there because it delved deeply into the GL mythology, but it made me really care about the characters, it made me want to learn more about them and find out what happened to them next. 4 stars!

Although I am much more a Marvel fan than a DC fan (or reader really) this was a very enjoyable story. The redemption of Hal Jordan, not only coming back from his past crimes but actually being vindicated. Geoff Johns wove not only a brilliant tale of the comeback of the "greatest Green Lantern ever", but filled in gaps of the mythos which have existed for many years. Not only that, but he shifted the focus to Hal and the other Lanterns, letting many of the other big name DC charact

I understand the Hal Jordan's redemption was a long anticipated event, and Rebirth was just as shiny and flashy as one might wish. But it failed to excite me, either about the characters or the universe. I am a new fan, so I made sure to read Secret Origin (and Wikipedia) before approaching this one, knowing that familiarity with the characters was necessary for the full impact. Either the homework I did wasn't enough, or maybe this is just not a story for me. In either case, I felt it was an ab

After the rollercoaster Sinestro Corps ride turned me into a fan of the Green Lantern concept, I thought I’d give Geoff Johns’s earlier stories a try. I guess this storyline infuriated fans back in the day as it rewrote earlier storylines and reintroduced the dead Hal Jordan, the most famous of the ring-wielding heroes, as the main character. In doing so they very obviously undid progress on the title, turning Kyle Rayner into a supporting character. But as an individual story about corruption a

When I first heard this series was coming out (this was a couple of years ago), I was somewhere between skeptical and totally uninterested. Unlike many DC Comics readers of my generation, I didn’t grow up with Hal Jordan as GL. By the time I came into the DCU, Hal had gone crazy nuts, become Parallax, tried to restart time, and sacrificed himself nobly to defeat the Sun Eater. He was gone; he shortly resurfaced as the new Spectre in the Day of Vengeance storyline (not be confused with the Day of

never read any Green Lantern before, but, since i'm trying to read some of the essential comics from DC that led up to Infinite Crisis and then on to Final Crisis, this series came up frequently. and it's awesome! as i understand it, there's of course the Green Lantern Corps comic series that continues with these characters, but also two "sequel" series, Tales of the Sinestro Corps, and Blackest Night. i'll probably read those soon, too.

I have kept hearing good stuff about this comics writer named Geoff Johns and so I decided to check out some of his work (reading wise, I actually got to his work on JSA a short while before I read this collection, but still...). Now, his work on Green Lantern is possibly what is most lauded and therefore I picked up this collection of his five issues miniseries Green Lantern: Rebirth (including the Wizard X prelude), in which he brought back the original Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, to the fold o

I was disappointed in this graphic novel, but that reaction is probably not the fault of the writer. Growing up, I did not read Green Lantern but decided to give the "Rebirth" story a try after seeing the film a few days ago.
The story line was clipped and fast-paced; this pacing left me lost and behind. Followers of GL will probably not have the same response. I just have to find a better entrance into the world of GL.
