Fern is an unusual girl, and in middle school, that’s just not acceptable. Every day, she has to deal with others’ spite over her strange qualities and habits such as blistering from sun exposure, a knack for accurate weather prediction, hearing voices without bodies, and talking with her dog. But what she doesn’t know is that she isn’t normal; she’s a vampire, or an Otherworldy. And among those, she’s one of the most special, because her unique ability to teleport distinguishes her ...more

Fern has always been different, but has never known what exactly made her different. She can communicate with her dog, and is "blinded" by the sun. Her skin sizzles in the sun, so she hates recess. Almost everyone at her school knows her.
Then, Fern disappears. Suddenly, just in the middle of class, she closes her eyes, and she lands on a white sandy beach, Pirate's Cove, five miles away from home and school. There she meets a man that knows she's different... he can help Fern.<!...more

Fans of Libba Bray’s A Great and Terrible Beauty may be intrigued by Kogler’s sophomore novel. Fern’s McAllister struggles to uncover and harness her mysterious spiritual powers. She learns much about her past, her family, and who she really is. She must then choose how she wants to control her powers and where her destiny lays. This choice greatly affects not only her life but the lives of her loved ones and the entire otherworldly race. Kogler uses the slightly cliché power struggle as ...more

I have found another Vampire book that I love. This one is for teens and is NOT a romance. It is about a girl named Fern who is a bit odd. She is allergic to the sun, has really sensitive eyes and does not fit in at school. Where as her twin brother is perfectly normal and fits in just great at school. Fern discovers that she is actually a Vampire and that there is more to being a Vampire than just being allergic to the sun. Fern with the help of her twin, Sam, finds out what it is to be a vampi...more

Yet another take on the increasingly popular vampire lore. This was a very interesting and original idea. I really enjoyed Fern’s character and watching her come to terms with becoming an Otherworldly and finally learning to accept herself. I loved Kogler’s blending of vampire history and Greek mythology! Though initially the two topics seem to have nothing in common, the context in the story played nicely! The plot was fast paced and suspense filled. I was never quite quick enough to figure...more

This is a great book for the young teen crowd. Entertaining throughout the beginning, middle , to end. A fantasy read about vampires, yet not all too crazy and disbelieving. 12 year old Fern is an outsider where she lives and feels she has no one that can relate to her. She soon goes on an adventure and discovers who she truly is, and feels not so different but more so special. Loved this book!

Entertaining, but not terribly original. An orphaned outcast who finds out she is special among special people. A big bad guy who wants power and admiration who is after said outcast. The mixture of Vampire lore and Greek Mythology felt slightly forced... the writing was compelling and kept me wanting to read more so I will read the next in the series for sure.

vamp fans/disney fans
This vamp story was just ok. It links vamps with old greek mythology. That was kind of interesting. 'Otherworly' is used as another term for vampire. If you are a Disney fan this is a cool book though. Its set in San Juan Cap. and some parts of the book take place at Disneyland. That was cool.

It was well-written, but the overall tone that the author had was so condescending. Granted, this book was written for younger readers, but still.

Was very good up until the "V" word dropped. For those who don't know, the "V" word, in this case at least, is "Vampire."
