It has taken a long time to get myself to the end of this book. Leo grasps the relationship between objects, rituals and meaning quite well so it is always a little trip to the past to read of Russia back then. He does a lot of internal character development and tries to explain how very different people experience life in different ways from the conservative intelectual who is afraid to exist outside the norm to the emotional charmer who idealizes everyone she loves to the point of finding in e...more
Even though I really enjoyed reading Anna Karenina I thought I would never get to the end of it. The characters in this book took on lives of their own and you can see in them people that you know and even a little of yourselves. Anna was only one of the many lives contained within the pages altho she touched all of them but the title is misleading because it was not solely about her. This book read like a Russian soap opera and brought to life all levels of society from the peasants to the aris...more
I first started reading this in my final year of high school and then slowly picked at it over the coming years. I'm in my third year of university now and have finally finished this classic. I definitely got more out of it this year than when I first started it, and had much more appreciation for Tolstoy's writing. However, I also realized how irrational Anna was and by her final scene I couldn't take her seriously. I thought this was still an interesting book and loved all the different subplo...more
Ok, this is a review of the book as a whole, not just part 2. Overall, I didn't like this book. And here's why:
Tolstoy is writing to make a social and political point. The problem is he focuses way to much on that and not enough on his characters. It feels like the characters are just there to make his point, and aren't really the primary focus of the book.
The book is full of relationships, but each of them is glazed over. I couldn't connect with any of the characters, and the relationships were...more

The book story was amazing because the author is/was male and he captured very feminine thoughts and feelings. He captured what it feels like to be viewed as property, especially long ago and how limited a woman's choices really were back then. You either were born into a social setting that would allow you to be kept or you were born into hard labor and living. There was a non-existent middle class in Russia at that time.

Although this is novel of over 900 pages (in my edition for both volumes), this numerous pages allowed the writer to have enough space to do a lot of good things with it:
- characters developing and becoming quite different people at the end of the novel (my examples are Anna and Oblonsky, although not too many readers would agree the second one)
- to include lengthy descriptions regarding several customs of the time like wedding or society events
- to describe many things in great detail (which al...more

"It ain't over, til it's over!" - That's what I thought somehow too often while learning about the Russian society of the 19th century ... that's the reason for only 3 stars, but from another point of view, it would even have deserved more than 5, as there is SO MUCH to get to know! I only assume that L.T. tried to include too much in one story - for these are at least 3 of them in one novel! And though they're connected to each other, in the end none cares for the protagonist. However, it's wor...more
Anna Karenina mi přišla jako krajně nevyrovnaná bytost. Na jednu stranu má odvahu jít proti proudu a na druhou stranu sebou tak nechá mávat jen svými pocity.

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Николаевич Толстой; commonly Leo Tolstoy in Anglophone countries) was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider To...more
