The Edge of the World
Chomumbhar, a small republic on the Indian Ocean, is unknown to the rest of the world until President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy arrive on a state visit to the island in 1962. Chomumbhars colonial past, its autocratic government, and its ensuing alliance with America over four decades mark the lives of its citizens.

I finished this slender book last weekend after having met the author at a writers conference. Through a series of brilliantly political, interconnected short stories, the novel is a tragic epitaph for a fictional Southeast Asian island nation that Westernized during Kennedy's presidency, and through a strangling forty-year relationship with the US, found itself on the wrong end of the military-industrial complex.

John F Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy journeyed to the small island of Chomumbhar in 1962. Theirs was a state visit designed to elicit an alliance with the Americans from the peoples of this republic in the Indian Ocean. The journey was not a wasted one. Press coverage of the visit placed Chomumbhar on the world map and American military formed a coalition that lasted for over four decades.
