Although he claims to be average, Dean is a truly amazing person. At age thirty, Dean started running as a means to stay fit. Before long, Dean became interested in running marathons and ultramarathons. Dean continously challenges himself to run longer distances. These challenges have included a 200 mile run, a 300 mile run, and several other ultra-endurance challenges.

In this book, Dean tells his experience running fifty marathons in fifty consecutive days - each in a different st...more

Dean is still the man.

I wish he elaborated more on each actual marathon instead of using each race to tie into the theme of marathon advice he's giving. For example, he didn't mention anything about the Delaware Marathon except for the fact that there was a bomb scare at the hotel, no actual mention about how the race was. This sort of information would be useful to someone who plans to run a marathon in each state, such as myself.
I would have liked to have seen an individual...more

This was the perfect book for me right now:

1. It's about running.
2. He gives a ton of useful tips and ideas.
3. Those tips and ideas are wrapped inside a compelling narrative.

50 marathons in 50 straight days is insane. Doing those 50 consecutive marathons in each of our 50 states is just dumb crazy. Then, when he's done, he is so bored/restless that he starts to run home...from New York to San Francisco!

Some gems I want to remember:

1. "...more

I enjoy reading Dean Karnazes books for sheer inspiration. I haven't finished this book yet but it has inspired me to get back on the running "wagon" and run another marathon next year. I will say however, that the book is a little redundant at times considering he is describing most of the races he ran in and the people he met along the way. Nevertheless, if you are interested in learning running tips, getting more advice, and getting inspired to push yourself a little farther, then y...more

Likely you saw Dean Karnazes on the news promoting his 50 marathons in 50 days. I remember watching him thinking “is this guy crazy?” For the majority of us, completing even one marathon would be a lifelong goal achieved. Here this guy is looking to do not one or two runs in a season but 50 without even a day of rest. Like many people, I wondered why this person would even trey such a feat. In fact, was it even possible?

So when I got a chance to review 50/50, I jumped at the cha...more

At the time that Dean Karnazes was running his fifty marathons in fifty days, Ian and I were preoccupied with new born Harriet. Although he is a local sports celebrity, I have only just heard of him this year promoting his account of those fifty marathons: 50/50.

For the 50/50 challenge, Dean Karnazes ran fifty consecutive marathons, each in a different state. All of the marathons were on official marathon routes, but not all of them were run during the normally scheduled marathons. ...more

Kind of surprised myself; I ran right through this book in one marathon session. (Sorry - couldn't help myself.) Anyway... I enjoyed this more than I expected to. Never been a big Karnazes fan, for no particular reason, but picked this, his latest, up for a quick read. The description of his 50 marathons in 50 days is fascinating, both from a logistical and endurance standpoint. He intersperses the travelogue (runalogue?) with lots of tips for runners, from beginners to endurance runners. ...more

50/50 isn't nearly as good as Karnazes' first book, Ultramarathon Man. There just isn't enough meat to the story, and the writing is really just average - even for a sports memoir. Karnazes tells of his challenge to run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days.

Basically each chapter represents one marathon, but there are so many running tips and resources inserted throughout the book that the overall flow of the story is impacted. I'd rather he collect he tips and hints and publish a sep...more

I learned that there is nothing crazy about running your heart out. And, getting out of the little fitness box you've created for yourself. There's no reason to do the same routines over and over, just like there is no reason to stop at a 5K or 10K or a half marathon... or a marathon... or twenty.

Dean's physical abilities are amazing. His ability to be a competitive athlete and actually be a good father, a "Company man" and a decent guy on top of it all makes anythi...more

Great book. There were sometimes points where the book appeared to be an advertisement for The North Face and other name brand items. Nonetheless the book was interesting, a great book for running fanatics or someone curious about a "super-human". Dean Karnazes has become a major influencing force in my life after this book. He re-kindled my passion for running and exercise.

This guy is amazing. Biomechanically a god, and a great attitude about the task he set upon in this book to boot. Unfortunately, the epilogue made me question his sanity and respect him a little bit less; if you feel satisfied with his accomplishments after he finishes #50, I'd recommend skipping this last part. Otherwise, great read!

After his extreme running exploits in UltraMarathon Man, Karnazes decided to run 50 marathons in 50 states on 50 consecutive days. This book tells the story of the tour, day by day, 26.2 miles at a time. Along with the inspiring stories of the people who chose to run these recreated marathons, he offers advice for ultra-runners and first timers. (My only complaint is that he's gone more commercial and he occasionally sounds like he's trying to sell you a certain brand of shoes, clothing or sport...more

I enjoyed this a lot less than "Ultramarathon". No doubt an incredibly accomplishment but you get it after just a few chapters so the rest gets a bit mundane. This would have worked great as an article or pamphlet but the book doesn't seem so necessary

I found this book an easy read and kind of fun. This guy is a fanatic, but also makes running seem doable. I mean he ran 50 marathons in 50 days and then ran another 1,310 miles half way home -insane. My brother loaned me the book & I'm glad.

interesting that he should have been bedeviled by so many doubts.

I wanted to give this book another star because I admire Karnazes' endurance and am grateful for the running advice he offers here, but the book just isn't a compelling narrative. You would think it would be hard to bore the reader with a story of fifty marathons run in fifty states in fifty days, but it quickly falls into a rut, with Karnazes getting up early, running a race, finishing in pain, getting on a bus, sleeping a few hours, and getting up to run again. This was still worth my time, ...more
