I picked this up on a whim, looking for a Jewish cookbook. I paid $10 for a used copy, and what a treasure it turned out to be! I am undecided how I feel about the writing style (supposed to be like an old Jewish grandma) since it *does* sound like my grandma (or her friends) but somehow doesn't sit right. It's a cookbook and a humorous memoir. Written in 1956, her first page begins, "If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, then knishes will get there faster...and stay longer." She brings the state of the modern Jewish household ala 1950's to life with her commentary about leisure, appliances, cooking till it looks right, and tastes right too! Author Sara Kasdan has written a truly user-friendly Jewish cookbook and I am So happy it's in my wee home library for keeps.
I used to read my mother's copy of this when I was a kid. In some ways it is now really dated, but I don't care. I needed a copy of it anyway. It doesn't have all my mother's notes in it, but that's ok too, for now.
This is NOT the cover on my book! My mom has the 1959, 7th printing edition.
