With nine years and a turbulent childhood between them, Kendra and Jamie have never been storybook sisters. After a long estrangement, they've finally begun to heal their hurts and forge a new bond.

Now Jamie is offering a gift Kendra has long since given up hoping for, the fondest wish of her heart--a baby. Already raising two young girls on her own, Jamie wants to become

Sister's Choice was a great addition to Emilie Richard's Shenandoah Album Series. I enjoyed reading the story of Jamie Dunkirk, sister to Kendra Taylor from Lover's Knot. It was also great to see the continuation of the story of Kendra and Isaac Taylor. This fifth book in the series was a novel of love, acceptance, forgiveness, and difficult choices.

After a very difficult adolescence, Jamie Dunkirk, single mother of two daughters, has finally gotten her life back on track. Studyin...more

Let me start with how painfully realistic this book was, and how moving it was to read about people overcoming so much pain - the two sisters have each recently inherited millions of dollars from their father. So, it started out your typical sob story that made you feel so sorry for the main characters. Then, when the younger sister offers to be a surrogate for her older sister, she has (surprise!) twins. Because what would a cheesy romance novel be without a set of rare twins? Then, and here's ...more

This is part of a series, but it's the only one I've read in the series. I think each book can be standalone so I don't think I'm missing out by reading only this one in the series.

My problem with this book was the horrible pacing. The plot goes nowhere for the first 400 (yes, 400) pages! Here is the plot for the first 400 pages: Younger sister Jamie is the surrogate for older sister Kendra and her husband Isaac. Jamie moves onto Isaac's family's property during the surrogacy, and sh...more

Here is my truth, I don't know if I had READ this, rather than listened to it, I would have liked it better. The subplot was much better than the main story. The most annoying part was that the main character- Jamie has 2 little girls who -based on the reader- totally bugged and more than once had me considering just stopping, rather than finish the story. The story is based on 2 sisters. One who made a mess of her life early on and to redeem herself, acts as a surrogate for her sister (who help...more

I'm sorry, but I didn't like this book at all. It dragged on and on, much longer than it needed to be. The structure of the book, the voice of the characters, and the author's...just the author's writing...went against everything I've learned, and everything that I know makes for a good story. I skipped the ending because in fact, the story ended way before the book did. I loved the concept, but the characters fell flat, and the story was told in a way that left it forgettable. The ending wa...more

I loved this. After reading Lovers Knot I wanted to know more about Jamie, as her relationship with her sister Kendra was not fully developed in that novel. I was so glad there was a sequel, picking up their relationship later on, when Jamie gets to give her sister the gift of motherhood. Sisters Choice is a quilting pattern, but also a very appropriate title for this story of surrogatae motherhood. Kendra is childless, but doesn't want to be. She practically raised Jamie, her younger sister...more

My Review of Sister’s Choice by Emilie Richards

Just as Emilie Richards weaves her exquisite quilts, she has woven a story for everyone who loves family and especially has shared a special bond with a sister.
Set in the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley with its beautiful scenery and panoramic views, Kendra and Isaac Taylor are planning their dream house on land they own in this stunning mountain bordered property. In what would seem to be a perfect life, Richards tells how this coupl...more

At 544 pages, I was a little leery that this book might drag out too long for my liking, but in the end I felt as though it was just perfect. Emilie Richards does an amazing job of weaving together a story that both addresses the current issues of today and capturing the history and struggle of years past. I loved the multiple story lines which kept me engaged from chapter to chapter.

Apparently, this is only one of the five books in the Shenandoah Album series though they don't follo...more

Although this book is part of a series, it easily can be read as a stand alone. Two sisters who have recently reconnected after Jamie has put her life back together after a period of addiction and bad decisions. Kendra and her husband Issac are building a new life together after Kendra's attacked and almost killed and their marriage was faltering. As a gift Jamie offers to be a surrogate mother for a child for Kendra and Issac. Jamie is already the mother of 2 adorable little girls. A journey of...more

This is the fifth book in the Shenandoah Album series. In this one, the author revisits Kendra and her sister, Jaime. Jamie has offered to be a surrogate for Kendra and her husband. This story is interspersed with a story about another pair of sisters around the time of WW2. Grace agrees to marry her dying sister's husband and take care of the 2 children. Grace is the grandmother of Jamie's love interest, Cash Rosslyn. The family orchard plays an important role in both stories. While I liked b...more

I LOVED this book. I love this series of books. My mom got me started on them from her love of quilting. The books are more than just talking about quilting though. This book was my favorite of the Shenandoah series so far. Loved it and got totally sucked into the characters and story. I also love how each book and the story goes with the title-which is the name of a quilt. Love it!

The story line was a great idea, but I think it could have been told better. I wish the ending would have been written out more. It's all this detail and character building for the first 3/4 of the book, then the ending is rushed and leaves too much unfinished at the end...in my opnion. Pretty good read, but won't read it again.

I really liked this book. I started it on Tuesday and finished it quickly. It is about two sisters that did not have the most ideal childhood. They are trying to to figure out if they can trust each other and become a family again. The story was gripping, the writing was well done and I really enjoyed all of the side stories. I loved it. There are more in the series and I can't wait to read them.

The Shenandoah Album novels have all been entertaining. Of course I enjoy reading anything with a quilting theme. Can't say the stories or characters are truly memorable but they are all connected by the setting. This novel was interesting because it approached the idea of being a surrogate for ones sister.

"Beach" type romantic read dealing with sisters from a dysfunctional family. From an estranged relationship, the sisters redevelop their family as one becomes a surrogate mother for the other. Quilting and redeveloping other relationships are interwoven in the story. Strong women characters.

A Shenandoah Album novel. Jamie has two daughters- Hannah and Allison. She is single. She has invitro fertilization for her sister-Kendra Taylor and husband Isaac. She has twin boys for them in the end. Jamie falls in love with Cash and his grandmother Grace, a quilter. Very good.

I really liked this book. I was considering listening to it again, but it is 14 hours. This is book 5 of the series & the first book I have listened to. It kind of bugs me this was the first book of the series sent to me. We have it on track to come as a series now, so I'll listen to it again after I've listened to the first four.

I have now read 4 books of hers in this particular series. Each book I felt was better than the last. I have enjoyed how each book concentrates on different individuals of this little community, making you feel a part of the community as you get to know your neighbors.

I enjoyed this journey. The characters had immense depth. There was a story within a story. It all felt very simple, and yet the storyline was not. This book felt soothing. The author is a former therapist. It shows in the way she writes about relationships.

As powerful as the first book and brings the story full circle, tying up some links among the people. A nice touch when two women who learned to hate and avoid each other find comfort in each other's friendship when they are in their 80s. One of my favorites.
Patricia Solla
Though set both in the past and the present it's not overwhelming and easily able to keep track of both stories at the same time. A good commentary about the choices we make, why we make them and how it affects our lives. A very good read.

I enjoyed this book even though it was basically just a romantic novel. Sort of like several love stories all intertwined. Very easy reading although it was over 500 pages long. I will definitely seek out other books by this author.

A single mother becomes a surrogate for her sister, and along the way learns to quilt, makes a friend, falls in love and becomes sick.

This was my first book by Richards, and I don't think I'll go out of my way to look for another. This story was nice, but dragged on a bit. And some of the characterizations seemed unreal, especially the two little girls.

Surrogate motherhood. Family relationships. Quilting (Emilie's focus).
I hadn't heard of the Sister's Choice quilt pattern before. I looked it up, it's a version of a nine-patch quilt. http://www.quiltville.com/sisterschoice....

I really liked this book, but my favorite part was the substory within the book. I wish that the substory was more developed. A beautiful story about what people do for family and what it does for us.

I found this book to be interesting and thought it was written pretty well. A long time ago I had talked with a friend about being a surrogate for her so I could relate to the characters in a very small way. My job as mammographer makes me relate to the breast cancer storyline and what women have to go through. I will probably at some point read her prior books in this series - didn't realize it was a series.
Jillwitucki
Great story! This series is great because each story focuses on someone else in the town of Toms Brooks. Always well written with strong personal relationships and lessons to be learned.

Mom and I were reading these together, this is the last one to come out. I didn't like it as well, but maybe it's just the subject matter and reading it without her.
Carolyn
Excellent read about the relationship between two sisters, and an unexpected family. Loved reading it - felt like I was part of the story.

So now it is getting good. The girls found a fawn and Granny Grace is keeping it alive. Jaimie is getting pregnant for Kendra and her husband because they can't have kids. Cash is back in the picture and just built a great tree house for the little girls...so yes, it is getting interesting.

I liked this book a lot.
