If I didn't really love crochet and know a lot about it, I probably would've given the book 1 star instead of 2. I enjoyed the parts that dealt with learning the craft. I didn't much care for the stupid antics of the main character and how she actually broke the law a few times to snoop. There's one thing to be curious, it's another to be foolhardy and have no regard for one's own safety.

For the life of me, I couldn't finish Hooked on Murder by Betty Hechtman. It's been sitting around the house for some months, but the cozy mystery idea has never really hooked me. As the bookshelf whittled down to just what was left, I decided to give it a try. I like knitting, this was about crocheting - I decided to have at it.
First, I should say I didn't finish. I tried, and tried, and well, even left it in the bathroom as the only reading material, and ended up counting toilet paper rolls an...more

If you want a perfectly lovely, cozy murder mystery on the level of a MacMillan and Wife TV episode, then Hooked on Murder is your cup of tea. Molly is a 40-something widow who is working in a bookstore running the events schedule. She is also the one who set up the Tarzana Hookers crochet club to begin meeting in the bookstore. So when the fouding Tarzana Hooker ends up dead, found by Molly, and Molly becomes the main suspect, of course she is going to learn how to crochet and become an amateur...more
The Crochet Mystery series has been in my TBR for quite a few months now. I love to crochet and the idea about a murder mystery series set around a group of crocheters tickles my crafty heart.
The first book in the series is HOOKED ON MURDER, and it sees bookstore event co-ordinator, Molly Pink, in the hot seat after she is suspected of murdering Ellen Sheridan, the leader of the crochet group. Now it's up to Molly, with her trusty sidekick in the form of best friend Dinah, to try to solve the cr...more

Molly Pink co-ordinates events at Shedd and Royal books, but ends up stumbling upon the body of Ellen Sheridan, leader of the crochet group and her late husband’s old business partner. Soon she is being targeted by the policewoman in charge of the investigation whose judgement is clouded by jealousy over Molly’s relationship with Detective Barry and feels like the only way she can get herself out of the sticky situation is to do some investigating herself.

This is the first book in a new cozy mystery series. "Molly Pink is about to discover the joys of crochet. It's a relaxing escape from her hectic life as a bookstore event coodinator and from the stress of being the latest murder suspect in Tarzana, California. For Molly, the weekly crochet group at Shedd & Royal Books and More ws just another event to manage. Then she stumbled across the body of group leader Ellen Sheridan. It was a cute little mystery that flew by pretty fast. I liked the added crochet talk, but I think if people aren't interested in the craft they may find this book to be a little boring in parts. Not that the author went into great detail about crocheting, but it was definitely a theme in the book.

Hooked On Murder is a A Crochet Mystery by Betty Hectman, it is number one in a series. The word series just makes me want to giggle with joy.
In this fast paced, well written and often humorous novel, there are some laugh out loud scenes when the crocheters face off again the knitters, forty-eight year old Molly, Mom of 2 grown sons, widowed less than a year is building a new life for herslef as the events coordinator at he local bookstore.

I really enjoy these kinds of stories with women who have great friends, get-togethers, and believable life issues. I'm a major crocheter, so these are right up my alley. Only con? An editor should have read the book and pulled out some of the zillions of times the term "rolled her eyes..." was used. Someone is ALWAYS rolling their eyes, according to the story, and it's so overused that I suspect there was no editor. It's happening in the second book of the series, too...what the heck? Check for...more
I was embarrassed to read this book on the train...but I did. I needed something mindless...and without love. This book? Was that....the mystery was pretty boring. No exciting cliff hangers, not even a curious search ahead to guess what was happening....it was all blah. blah. blah.

Widowed Molly is just returning some crochet hooks that Ellen Sheridan left in the bookstore where Molly works. She doesn't expect to find Ellen, Molly's husband's partner, dead, and still less does she expect to find herself the prime suspect. Molly's boyfriend, detective Barry, hands the investigation over to another detective, but unfortunately the person in charge is now a woman who doesn't care for Molly at all. Molly joins the crochet club Ellen founded, and aided by her best friend Dinah,...more
The best part about this was the MC's background and her relationship. I liked the way the two grown sons were worked in, and the conflict that Molly has with her boyfriend is entirely believable and well-thought-out. Also the murderer's MO was clever. The rest of it was a slog. Very few likable characters, and MC herself seems to have a problem with most of the people she encounters. She has a sidekick-best friend, but she's faintly drawn. Also, it felt like there was a lot more worrying about...more
I enjoyed the story in this book and I've started the next one in the series, but part of me just can't get over stupidity. I get needing conflict in the book, but build up to it, don't have two people argue over nothing and have someone storm out because you need conflict. And having your heroine overreact about something ridiculous that even her friends in the book say is ridiculous is probably not a good thing.

It took me a couple of chapters to really enjoy hanging with Molly and the crochet peeps, but once I got to chapter 3, I was in there. Molly has a legitimate reason for gettng involved in the murder solving. She was found over the dead body, the victim bought out Molly's business after the death of Molly's husband, the victim's partner, and the detective in charge of the case has the hots for Molly's boyfriend, another police detective.....keeping up? Yeah, that was my problem at first. A whole...more
I'm not done reading this just yet, but, so far this is a pretty good book! I really love a good cozy mystery, and for one that combines my two favourite things, baking (there's a recipe in the back!) and crocheting, it is not as cheesy as i thought it would be.

I started crocheting a few months back, so seeing a 'crochet mystery' on the shelf at the library piqued my interest. "Hooked on murder" is a light cozy mystery focusing on a crochet group (The Tarzana Hookers). Lots of crochet talk (including a pattern at the back of the book), which is great if you're interested in it, but not too heavy to spoil it if you don't (I think). The characters are generally interesting and the book has a light touch, never taking itself too seriously. An enjoyable re...more
It was a "crochet mystery", which included a "delicious recipe & crochet pattern". That seems sort of strange to me. It was all right, but not a series I'm likely to pursue. Because of my fiber connections (contact person for the Eagle River Spinners) I receive notifications about new books that relate to fiber/yarn. That's how I heard of this author. The book was not bad and it did keep my attention, as I wanted to know "who dunnit". Parts of it just seemed a little unrealistic and some wha...more
I wasn't sure I would like this book when I first picked it up, but as I was reading I started to like it more & more. I am really looking forward to reading the next one in the series. The characters in this book were good & I hope many of them will return in the next one. I had 3 people in mind for the killer & was totally surprised when it turned out to be none of them. I was also surprised that there was a crochet pattern in the back of the book which I will have to try soon.
Had it not been for my interest in learning how to crochet, I would have skipped this book altogether. I figured out who the murderer was pretty quickly; his/her motive was not interesting and neither was the brief history that Molly provides about her recently deceased husband. Where my frustration went through roof, however, was many pages the author devoted to Molly's learning how to crochet. There's nothing suspenseful in reading how novices learn to craft!
This was all the rage amoung us crocheters who longed for something other than the insufferable glut of knitting mystique/mystery/cozy yarns (no pun intended). I like Monica Ferris because she seems to have well plotted mysteries and endearing characters with her needlework ship as a backdrop.
However, this book was a real disappontment. I found the narrative contrived, the characters mean spritied and little to like. Her other books improve, I hope.

This book is very interesting if you are into mystery types of books. It's a combination of knitting (crochet) and murder. The main character finds out that the person who started the crochet group has been murdered but because the main character has a bad record with the person who was murdered obviously she is the prime suspect so through out the book she try's to find out the true suspect but at the same time she has to prove her self innocent.
This is the first in the Crochet Mystery series, and I liked it very much. At first I was disappointed because the main character works in a bookstore and doesn't know anything at all about crocheting. She is the bookstore event planner and sets up for the crochet group that meets there. But she becomes involved in their group when their leader is murdered (within the first couple of pages of the book!) just before an afghan needs to be finished for a charity auction. Molly, of course, finds the...more
Really liked this book.....partly that may be because I am a crocheter and also love books....and this book deals with a crochet group and a bookstore.....just for fun....(not really) a couple of murders are thrown into the mix. What better formula for a very good read could you come up with.....besides all of that the author also included characters that I could relate to and moved the story along quite smoothly.

I love the books that involve knitters and this is the first one I have read that focuses on crochet. Molly is a widow working at a bookstore when she discovers crochet and murder. There is a crochet pattern and a recipe at the end of each of the books. I have 3 of the books from this series, not sure how many there are or if the 3 I have is the whole series so far.
I like to crochet so I wanted to read the only cozy mystery about crocheting that I could find. I have to say that I am not impressed. None of the characters are likeable except maybe the boyfriend/detective. The plot was good but I need characters I can relate to. I will try the next book in the series.

Don't despair too much at Molly's antics, she learns from her mistakes and takes a bit more care in later volumes in the series. And after all, who wouldn't take a few extra risks and bend a few minor rules if they were unfairly facing a murder charge? Another fun read from this series.
This was a nice introduction to a new and promising series. I liked the main sleuth a lot. The cozy theme of crocheting was attractive to me and made me think about learning the craft/art myself.
The crime was solid but, Molly's on/off relationship made it feel awkward to me.
I look forward to the next in the series as I feel the characters will be more established.
