Fathers & Sons is Ivan Turgenev's 1862 novel, his best known work. The title of this work in Russian is Отцы и дети (Ottsy i Deti), lit. meaning "Fathers & Children", but often translated as Fathers & Sons for euphonic reasons.
The fathers & children of the novel refers to the growing divide between two Russian generations. The character Yevgeny Bazarov has been referred to as the 1st Bolshevik for his nihilistic rejection of the old order.
Turgenev wrote Fathers & Sons responding to the growing cultural schism he saw between liberals of the 1830/40s & a growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the sons) & the liberals sought Western-based social change. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's path lay in traditional spirituality.
Fathers & Sons may be the 1st wholly modern novel in Russian literature (Gogol's Dead Souls, another main contender, is sometimes referred to as a poem or epic in prose like Dante's Comedy). The novel introduces a dual character study, as seen with the gradual breakdown of Bazarov's & Arkady's nihilistic opposition to emotional display, especially in the case of Bazarov's love for Madame Odintsova & Fenichka. This prominent theme of character duality & deep psychological insight would exert an influence on many great Russian novels to come, most obviously echoed in Tolstoy & Dostoevsky.
The novel is also the 1st Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, eventually gaining the approval of Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, & Henry James, proving that Russian literature owes much to Turgenev.

All editions are printed to high specifications. Some include illustrations of historical interest.
Youth rebels. It was true in Russia in 1862 when Fathers & Sons appeared. At its center stands Evgeny Bazarov, medical student, doctor's son & nihilist. Bazarov rejects authority, all so-called truths based on faith rather than science & experience. His ideas bring him into conflict with his best friend, recent graduate Arkady Kirsanov, with Arkady's family, with his own parents & eventually with his emotions when he falls in love with the beautiful Madame Odintsova.
Turgenev's prior A Sportsman's Sketches helped end serfdom in 1861. His complex portrait of Bazarov, whose goals he admired but whose rejection of art & embrace of violence he rejected, enraged both right & left. The right saw Fathers & Sons as glorifying radical extremism. The left saw it as a denunciation of progress. Even today, readers argue over his attitude towards Bazarov, unable to resist the novel's power to grip the heart while engaging the mind.
David Goldfarb is Assistant Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages at Barnard College. He has published numerous scholarly articles as well as the Introduction & Notes to the series' edition of Leo Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilych & Other Stories.

Turgenev's most celebrated story, considered one of the great classics of world literature, examines the conflict of generations and attitudes in mid-19th century Russia, as distant precursors of the revolution rumble through the rural landscape. When Arkady Kirasanov returns home from college, he brings his revolutionary friend, Bazarov. But Bazarov brings with him new and cataclysmic views of political philosophy. This story of ideas is brought vividly to life through the Kirsanov family and David Horovitch's compelling performance. A Cover to Cover Unabridged Classic. 6 cassettes.
