Anfangs noch argwöhnisch beobac ...more

I struggled to get through this. Although the premise is rather wonderful, the protagonist is egocentric, shallow and macho, a perfect match to all my prejudices of Italian men. There is also a lot of melodramic rambling, and people shouting in the street while gesturing wildly. Again, all my preconceptions of Italians are catered to.

Of course, Veronesi wants us to feel ambivalent towards Pietro, but I almost put the book away several times. I was constantly annoyed by his lack of understanding

Peccato. Perché in fondo è u ...more

The best thing about this excellent novel is its inside-looking-out approach. Yes, every first-person narrator is inside looking out. But this one feels different. This one is deeply alienated and yet very involved in a special, often contradictory way. And this narrator is not just a way of telling the story. He is the center of a whirlpool of people suffering in a variety of ways.

What is most important about him is that he has suddenly become a different person in the eyes of the world, and se

This was the book everyone was reading last Summmer. The premise was so promising: a handsome, wealthy, successful businessman-father, overwhelmed by grief when his wife dies suddenly, takes his young daughter to school. Hoping to help her ease back into to her first day, he assures her that he'll wait for her outside the school until the end of the school day. He does this every day, unable to stray from the reassuring presence of his daughter across the street, handling his business from the b ...more

A parti

'Quiet Chaos'. I really loved the premise of this book. After the death of his wife, Pietro Paladini decides to spend his days next to the school of his daughter Claudia. It starts out as a joke, but turns into a very serious desire to stay there. Subsequently, Pietro's family and colleagues start showing up, and they show themselves to be very open-hearted.

A lot can be said about Pietro Paladini. Some readers can't stand his behaviour, apparently. This is where the book becomes a matter of opi

I'll admit I bought this book largely because of the gorgeous cover. Nonetheless, it was a meaningful and intelligent book. The story concerns a man who's fiance dies while he's saving a drowning stranger. A widower, for all intents and purposes, he's left to care for his ten-year-old daughter. He does so by sitting outside her school for three months instead of going to the office. He fills his days with various musing, which can, at times, bore, but which also provide some pretty interesting i ...more

Brilliant.

Luckily I hadn't read the backflap of the book and so I was in awe, right from the start. The strongest first chapter I ever read. I was completely swept off my feet.

After that the book takes a whole different tone. Towards the end it becomes almost a farce. Someone here was annoyed because it 'confirmed everything he thought about Italians'. Well, exactly. Hysteric, selfconscious, but always amusing. The writer, storyteller is always concerned about details and that made me laugh at t

A novel that moves slowly yet powerfully through a man's quiet journey through the grieving process after the sudden loss of his partner. He becomes part of the microcosm of life in the park outside his daughter's school where he sets up daily camp and quietly observes the comings and goings of various characters. Translated superbly from the original Italian, the translator has managed to retain the specific sardonic and witty sense of Italian humour. I was inspired to read this book after watc ...more

L' ambiente davanti a scuola, abbastanza verosimile.

This book was interesting, not something I would have normally picked up myself, but it's definitely good to try new things and expose yourself to a variety of viewpoints. It was tough going at times, but not really for sheer tragedy, as I went in expecting. The protagonist is a bit of an asshole, which, to his credit, he does realize, although it's not something he does much to change. I really did not appreciate the way he thought about pretty much every woman he encountered, basically automat ...more

Ok so this would have been 5 stars but for the fact that Veronesi does go off topic at times. The opening chapter was fabulous and had me instantly hooked. I felt I was right there on the beach watching the drama unfold. Description is piled upon description and the whole thing comes alive. It is hardly surprising that this cannot be maintained throughout the book.

Sandro Veronesi, born in Florence, Tuscany in 1959, is an Italian novelist, essayist, and journalist.
