I continue to have a strange fascination with books about the Amish, although I don't know why. This book, however, really annoyed me in the end. All anyone cared about was converting their friends/family/neighbors to their chosen religion. I imagine I really should have expected that, given I was reading Christian/Inspirational fiction, so the fault should really lie with me, and not with the book. But still. I was rolling along with the idea of most people (with a few obvious exceptions) just...more

"The Longing" is the final installment in "The Courtship of Nellie Fisher" series and I absolutely cannot wait to read more from Beverly Lewis!

In this book we see more of the struggle of a community as it comes to terms with conflicts of faith and church division. The community is also devastated to hear about a near fatal injury of one of their own. Much of this book explores how God can use any situation to open our eyes and our hearts to Him, and also to our friends and family that we may nee...more

I actually listened to this book on Audio CD, which I HIGHLY recommend! This was my first time listening to a novel on CD, and I thought the reader was excellent. It really added another layer to the text. With Lewis's clean, beautiful, and charming writing and the reader's distinction of the characters' voices and manner of speaking, I found myself more often laughing or gasping with the characters.

Though Lewis often contrasts Amish and fancy life, I think this was even more prominent in this b...more

Finally, the whole Caleb and Nellie Mae issue gets resolved, by the 3rd book in this series it was getting a bit old. But bringing in Christian was a nice change, and of course Nellie Mae agonizes over who will be her beau. I did enjoy this series, but actually was glad when I was done reading it. Too much teenage Amish drama for me. There were also some loose ends that I feel were not really tied up very well. Seriously, Rhoda goes out on her own for a while and then comes back, more than willi...more

Overall, I really enjoyed the whole series. It was a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Amish.

That said, parts of this book were confusing. I couldn't understand why Reuben Fisher was so frustrated with some of the New Order converting to the Beachys and leaning towards technology. I felt that he lost sight of the fact that being saved by God's grace is all that matters. I also was confused about why the New Order Amish continued in the ways of the Old Order, even when they claimed to hav...more

Life goes on and on in the third and final novel in this series. If the storyline drags and becomes a bit monotonous, perhaps it is meant to be indicative of the simple and plain life. Though this series at first seems to be about Nellie and her lost love, it is really more about adhering to the Old Amish ways, and the split in the community when a Mennonite cousin leads others to break from the old ways. In this case, theology, specifically claiming salvation through grace and studying and disc...more

Another good book by Lewis. Before reading these books, I knew next to nothing about the Amish life, except that people rode in carriages and lived like people in the 1800s, more specifically, like the people in "Little House on the Prairie" TV series. It was my mother who let me read The Shunning and I loved that book so much that I set out to read all of the books by Beverly Lewis. I have not reached that goal yet, and perhaps it will be a long time before I finish them since Lewis will likely...more

This being the final book in the series I knew it would start early in closing some stories, giving the reader closure, as Lewis does with all her books. I will say this is the first time I didn't like the entire way the book ended.
For Rosanna and her husband Elias, they get blessed in an unexpected way, or I should say, twice blessed. Again, as in my review for the second book, I will say Rosanna's story really overshadowed that of Nellie Mae Fisher and Caleb Yoder. There are times in the boo...more

ANOTHER great book from Beverly Lewis!!!

this series, for some reason, not only gave me immense pleasure, BUT ...

also stomped on my toes quite a bit! my faith seems SSOOO much more feeble than i thought it was!! i THOUGHT it was growing stronger, BUT ... then i compared myself to some of the characters in this series, and ... ESPECIALLY when up against Rosanne and Elias? well, i just failed miserably!!! 8^(

this series, again, more so than any others i've read by this writer, has me more motivate...more

This book was okay, but there really wasn't a climax. The pace was fairly slow throughout the whole thing and even though some major events happened, none of them really came as a surprise or provided a necessary jolt to the action.

I probably won't read any more of the books in this series (or other series like it ~ what I guess you'd call the "wholesome Amish romance genre") but I did kind of enjoy some of the "typical" Amish and Mennonite things, since I grew up in such a community. I could re...more

I've seen these pretty books for years in my local store and finally decided to buy one. But, like a dunce, I bought the third in a series without having read the first two. I've never read a series out of order before, but in this case didn't need the other books to understand the religious and historical climate set by the author. The heroine is a young Amish woman in the time of her life when she is looking for a husband. The book follows many people in the small town. I found them to be deli...more

You should all know by now that I don’t like Nellie and Caleb because I’ve already said so in my review of The Longing and The Forbidden. That said, I found Nellie to be somewhat tolerable at the end of The Longing, the third and final book in the The Courtship of Nellie Fisher series. I also found The Longing to really be lacking a storyline in this one, and it’s pretty slow to move along.

However, it’s the treatment of infertile Rosanna and her husband, Elias, to be this series ultimate downfal...more

This was my first Beverly Lewis book, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it! I just loved learning about the Amish and their customs. I did get confused, though, in the beginning when the differences between the Old and New Order were vague. I'm still not sure just how much/what kind of "fancy" stuff the New Order was allowed. But then again, this is the 3rd book in the series, so maybe I would have found that out had I read the previous two! Anyway, I also found it super refreshing to read...more

Finished in under 24 hours? Oh man...anyway, the ending had to grow on me: I had resigned Nellie's future in one direction but then it went the other way. Eventually, I realized how much more sense that made, but at first, I'll admit I was a bit put off! Good end to a wonderful series, though. I so appreciate Beverly Lewis's work and how it quietly calls me to Christ and home--whether that is the author's intention or not. I've had the first of those two for over three years now, and in 87 days...more

A complete change of pace from Georgia and her ace gang. However, from the previous 2 books in the series, I have come to the conclusion that Caleb is a twit and that Nellie needs to find someone better. So I am disappointed that from the cover and first few pages, that it appears Ms. Lewis will be sticking to her formula of the heroine marrying the boy she loves from the beginning, after overcoming the obstacles in their path. I'm not Amish, so I don't know, but don't even *some Amish girls* mo...more

This is a good end that ties up the loose ends left flapping in the wind from the last book. Wonderful surprises and good endings await you in the final book of Beverly Lewis' series. I only had one fault with it; one end did not work out as I wanted. Though that is my opinion you must read and form your own! :)

I enjoyed reading this series by Beverly Lewis 3 books in "The Courtship of Nellie Fisher" Longing was the last one and Nellie Mae had a great longing to learn more and more about God and the Scriptures. She has gave up her Beau, Caleb as he was not a believer and she knew the scripture said to not be unequally yoked. She immersed herself in her work at the bakery and her family and just got by, still having a Love for Caleb in her heart.

After reading the whole series, I really wish I could give this 3 and a half stars. I was definitely engaged in the story, the details of Amish life and a religious split in the community in 1966-67. The story is positive, uplifting and hopeful. The romance is bland, but sweet. The secondary characters offered a little more color and excitement than the main characters. Loved the themes of love, faith, and forgiveness.

Reading the final book in this trilogy confirmed that this is my favorite Beverly Lewis series. It rang very true from my own experience with Amish neighbors and I loved how she brought up that the Amish really do need to be reached for salvation. Although I was hoping for a different conclusion for Nellie Mae and the ending felt too rushed, it was a good read that challenged aspects of my own faith.

This was a pleasant and relaxing read. The ability to bring this story to an artful conclusion shows how Lewis has progressed in her writing. Often in her trilogies one of her books will not be of the same quaility as the other two books. In this book all three books were well written and the story told with a crispness. In some of her past books I had felt that there was a drag to the story.

My grandmother lived in Upper State New York and everytime I visited her, we went to see the Amish. She had a special relationship with them, and I am now the proud owner of many Amish quilts. I have always been interested in their lifestyle and have read all of Beverly Lewis's books. The only problem is they are not well written. I keep reading them, though.

This book was fine. I struggled with this series, though, because there was so much time between the book releases and the fact that the author writes only Amish stories. After awhile, the similar Amish names all blend together and the series of books all start sounding the same. All in all the book was fine and wrapped up this series.

I love all of Beverly Lewis's Books. I have read almost all of them. She writes so well about the Amish. I learned the same from all her books and that is how the Amish live. She writes just like you are there. It has been a while since I read these books. I usually buy them right when they come out and I read them right away.

This book ended up being a little predictable in the outcome, but I found the series interesting because of the Amish setting. I also found her writing to be restful. Sometimes I want excitement and adventure and lots of thought-provoking ideas, and sometimes I just want to relax and enjoy a restful story. That's what these Lewis novels were to me. Nice stories, nice characters, nice setting.

I picked up this book because it looked interesting but after I started reading it, I just couldn't keep interested. The pace was slow and it didn't hold out much hope for it getting any better. I wouldn't read this book and probably wouldn't read any of the rest of the series.
