I typically don't read fantasy/futuristic stuff...it doesn't appeal to me all that much. But I read this one anyway. Actually, when I read the summary on the back at B&N, I missed the little thing at the top calling it futuristic, and though the summary seemed a little odd to me, I thought maybe it was some covert group-contemporary thing. Oops! My bad. I didn't realize it was a futuristic romance until I got home and looked at the reviews here on GR. But I read it anyway. It sounded pretty interesting, and it's a menage story, which I always find interesting (and hot ;).

Undercover is set in a future time where there are multiple universes, space travel, ruling Families, and opposition fascists causing trouble. Sera Ayers is a lieutenant in the Federation Military Corps. For an unranked (ie non-Family) woman, it's a great accomplishment. And she believes in what she does. It's been the main thing in her life since Ash Walker broke her heart by marrying the woman his family told him to (and he asked her to be his mistress). She's never gotten over what he did to her and has avoided anything to do with him since. Then suddenly, he's back in her life with a vengeance. She's been ordered to join his covert team to work to find traitors who are supplying information to the Imperialists. But to make their investigation work, she'll have to pose as the concubine of the other member of the team, Brandt Pela. Which isn't a hardship for Sera. There's an instant attraction between the two. And soon the attraction becomes more. But there's also Ash, and the feelings she's never gotten over. Ash has made it more than clear he wants her back, and that he has no problem involving Brandt in their relationship. Sera is wary, though. She gave her heart to a man once. She doesn't know if she has it in herself to open up again.

I enjoyed this book, for the most part. The futuristic part didn't really grab me - the whole thing with the multiple universes, finding traitors, advanced technology, etc. I just never find storylines like that all that interesting (in the context of a romance novel). So the plot/setting part of the book was something that was just kind of...there...for me. I read it, didn't mind it too much, but I can't particularly say I liked it. Plus, I thought some of the words/phrasing/ideas reminded me a little too much of things from the Star Wars series.

On the romance angle...I liked the book quite a bit, though there were a few things I thought could have been a little different - more so just on a personal preference level. I liked all the characters...though a couple times I thought Ash got a little Neanderthal, and Sera got on my nerves more than once with her rampant insecurity. But overall, I enjoyed reading their relationship. And the sex was super hot.

It's worth mentioning - because this type of thing doesn't appeal to everyone - that there is a dom/sub aspect to this story. Sera is a bedroom submissive and both Ash and Brandt are Doms. It wasn't a theme extended outside of sex play, though. But it was there. Sera was very submissive when it came to anything sexual. It was something she reveled in. So it that doesn't float your boat, then this might not be a book you'll like. Oh, and it should also be mentioned that there is some M/M play in the book between Ash and Brandt (in case that's not your thing, either).

Which was one aspect of the book I wished there'd been more of. I mean, sheesh, two yummy Alphas enjoying each other? What's not to like?! But some of those scenes were kinda cut off, or not really explored and I found myself disappointed that that aspect of the book didn't go further.

I also thought, to a certain degree, that the sexual aspect of the book didn't quite meet the overall vibe. There's the D/S thing, and this overall tone of sort of sexual freedom, expression, and exploration with the male and female body piercings, tattoos, the D/S thing...but yet the sex stayed more on the, well, not basic side because there was more than basic sex, but...tamer, I guess you could say. I just expected a little more considering the set-up and vibe of the story. That's not to say there wasn't some super hot sex because there was plenty of that. I just thought the boundaries could have been pushed a little more to fit with the image I got from reading the book.

Anyway, still a pretty good book, though. I would have enjoyed it more if it had been set in a contemporary setting, but oh well. For those of you who like futuristic erotic and menage stories, then I think you'd probably like this one.

This one has to much BSDM as in PAIN!!! and M/M in this one for me, I couldn‘t finish it.. Plus the story line is different, but it just to similar to Laid Bare.. I will suggest for those like me who likes D/s with out pain and less M/M please go with Laid Bare..
I also didn’t enjoy the characters or the story line.

DID NOT FINISH.
Too much sex and nothing else despite two gorgeous hunks. It's lost my interest as it reads more like a historical in parts rather than a futuristic and I'm not captivated by the sex in this menage so have been hoping for the action-suspense sequences. It took too long so I ditched this for Cindy Gerard.

Sera Ayers, a decorated lieutenant with the Federation Military Corps has little time for recreation much less love. Initially shocked to be pulled from her squad to serve in a covert operation, the shock turns to anger when she learns that she will be working under her former lover, Ash Walker.

Ash was the love of her life, until he left her disillusioned and bitter when he unexpectedly revealed his pending marriage to another woman and insultingly asking her to be his mistress.

Ash made the worse mistake of his life when he allowed family pressure to result in the loss of Sera. Although he has tried to forget Sera, when Ash’s latest mission requires a female officer with her skills he realizes this is the perfect opportunity to get her back into his arm in any way possible.

Sera struggles to keep her attraction under control by rushing through the job so that she can return to her normal, safe life. Unfortunately, even though she attempts to deny it, she still has not recovered from Ash’s betrayal.

The only thing that makes working under Ash bearable, is having his sexy partner Brandt as a buffer. When Sera is informed that her mission is to pose as Ash’s mistress, she rebels into posing as Brandt’s mistress instead. This is where the story really starts to heat up as Sera finds herself attracted to Brandt and that attraction is mutual…

Undercover is an enthralling read and I savored every word. Sera is a powerful woman that I can definitely identify with. In fact, I wish I was her! Ash and Brandt are fantasy men that any woman would find exciting.

Lauren Dane could have written a book sketchy on details and storyline, filled with meaningless, hot sex, as it plays-out in so many erotic books. However, this is not the case. The world she creates is as real and intriguing as her characters.

Undercover is a riveting novel of action, romance and well conceived characters. In addition, the extremely sexy scenes (Warning explicit sexuality and ménage) had this reader HOT under the collar! This book blew me away! There is nothing that could be added to make this romance experience better – except a sequel!

Futuristic/SFR with a relationship driven plot. I'm not saying there isn't action but much of it is sexual. Since this is a ménage book, a great deal of time is spent on scenes exploring combinations of one, two and three partners. [Despite the heroine assuring them she is okay with 'boy touching' - her words, not mine - the two guys are into her and not each other. They are emotionally intimate, and there is an occasional kiss or caress - but it's on the way to what they really want, her.]...more

This book was different from what I expected when I started it. I loved the space aspect of it.

From the start I wasn't sure how the HEA was going to happen. Sera had some serious and very real issues with Ash. I loved her instant reaction to him, it was a long time coming! As you learned what happened to them in the past you understand her visceral reaction to seeing him and to what he was asking her to do. I have to admit at this point I didn't like Ash either.

My Review:
A wonderful mix of science fiction fantasy and eroticism, this was a fun book to read. Sera, Ash, & Brandt are all soldiers for the Federation, which is at war. Sera has been working her own team, but Ash & Brandt have been working deep undercover and want to add Sera to their team. The issue is that Sera & Ash have a history together that left her broken-hearted 10 years ago and she is not ready to let go of that yet. Brandt comes up with a plan to get Sera to agree to work with them by having her act as his lover rather than Ash's. They are working deep undercover where their every move is monitored at all times so the undercover work has to be VERY convincing.

This book is really very hot. These three are having to maintain their cover story while at the same time, they all three are getting re-acquainted and trying to find a comfortable place mentally to work together. The emotions under the surface are roiling, growing, and changing. A very cool feature in the book is that because they are having to work so deep undercover, they have a comm link within their heads, but they have to open it to get it to work. Sera spent a lot of the book stubbornly ignoring the calls from the other 2 on her comm link.

Sera is stubborn and strong. While Brandt & Ash both have family power and money behind them, Sera comes from nothing and has made a lot of her life regardless. She was devastated 10 years ago, but managed to pull herself back up from that and has become a better person for it. She believes in the job that she's doing and that is most important to her. As her feelings for both Brandt & Ash grow, her softer side comes out and it's really gorgeous how much she soothes both of them just by little touches.

Ash never stopped loving Sera. Family obligations kept him from being able to do what he wanted 10 years ago. In this regard, this book reminded me a lot about the structure from historical novels... Where moneyed sons have to make the correct family matches for their families. But now, Ash has made that sacrifice and is not willing to make it again. He realizes what he lost 10 years ago when Sera walked away and will not lose her again.

Brandt was my favorite character in this book. He realizes almost immediately that he wants a relationship with Sera...one that includes Ash too. He is the most level-headed of the three because he does not have past emotions holding him back. All he knows is that he loves these two and wants to do what he has to to make their Triad work. It's really a fabulous dynamic.

Like I said, this book was simply a fabulous sci-fi erotic book. I enjoyed the world that was established seamlessly throughout the book without all the detailed world-building that you normally get in first books of a series. The scenes are hot and I loved that there was a relationship between the men as well as the relationship with Sera. It makes for a really beautiful relationship between all three. I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this series in the very near future!

Undercover is my first taste of what Lauren Dane has to offer as an Erotica author and all I can say is: "Wow, she knows how to make a statement!" To blend romance with a three-way relationship is a hard thing to accomplish, or it is at least in my book. To make such a theme work and also make it believable for the reader is not an easy feat. While I am exploring the Erotica genre in all earnest now Lauren Dane has given me something new, the male on male subject within a male/female/male three-way.

Ash Walker, Brandt Pela and Sera Ayers are very different from each other making their dialogues lively and simmering with sensual tension as emotions increase. Ash owns his sensuality in a raw, dark way that is almost savage. He can be very caring but he's also feral in his actions against those who hurt the one he cares about. Brandt is almost the opposite of Ash, which of course works very well in both the developing relationship as in the bedroom. He emits elegance and charm but in a very commanding way. While Sera is strong and holds her ground in both her professional and privet life, she still hungers for Dominance in the bedroom and you can tell that she has experience as a submissive.

The foundation of the action entails that in the Known Universes the Federation is good with its Ranking Families and that the Imperialists are de evil doers, hungry for power. Sera, Brandt and Ash form a triad, investigating a case of treachery from the Ranking Families. The Futuristic backdrop in this story is functional and not disturbing in any way. Sometimes the futuristic world-building or action takes away the attention from the actual romance but the author makes sure that - though it is intertwined within the story - it is all about the three-way relationship.

Lauren Dane beautifully illustrates the workings of a triangular love affair. Not only is it between Sera, Ash and Brandt as a whole but it is also about the individual ties that bind them separately. Brandt and Sera are falling in love while Ash and Sera already have a past. And then there's Ash and Brandt together, my first taste of male on male sensuality and it heightened the Erotica feel of Undercover. The attention focuses on the M/F/M relationship and yet Dane teasingly flirts with the male on male aspect. As this is fairly new to me, especially in how this author gives voice to it, it amazed me how natural it all felt.

Furthermore, it forged a stronger bond, deepening the connection between the two men and woman from chapter to chapter! I was enthralled by the earthly eroticism in this novel that both emanates desire as it equals in romantic emotions. But also the fears that comes natural with such a relationship is illustrated with in-depth comprehension. It all blends together in to a powerful read. It speaks about a three-way of the heart and to make it for a long-lasting relationship isn't easy. Thankfully Lauren Dane doesn't hide from this fact because if all parties are willing to do their best it can result in more than a fulfilling relationship. This message is something that makes Undercover more realistic and believable for me as the reader.

There might be minor details that I perceived with less enthusiasm but they are just that, minor. The cameo of supporting characters came down to family members of both Ash and Brandt, the brother of Sera and of course the concubines at Nondal that provide the necessary interaction with the key characters. I can't help but be completely swept away with the erotic-romance aspect in this tale. Brandt and Ash will give many female readers a taste of their personal liking and will empathize with Sera at the same time. The level of carnality is exquisite and given individuality and emotions from the characters.

Undercover is set ablaze with emotion as it is brimming with awe-commanding characters and provocative erotic scenes that had me reacting with the pulls-pounding need to keep on reading. Lauren Dane has concocted a story with the finest elements of what the Erotica genre has to offer. My first novel has definitely not been my last of this author! My complements. (less)

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
Don’t read this if you want plot and character development. The story about finding a traitor doesn’t move along. There is not much action. There is a lot of talk and discussion about these guys or those guys might be doing something bad. In the end, the evidence and what happens to the traitors was not very interesting, sort of conveniently wrapped up. The story that does move along is the relationship among the three: how they interact with each other, start having sex, fall in love with each other, and decide what to do about it. They are primarily attracted to each other’s physical beauty.

On the positive side, some readers will enjoy the hot, wild sex scenes. Most of these are ménage a trois with two men and one woman. One scene has just two men. There is rear door activity and some bondage. If readers are ok with these combinations, then they should find the erotic scenes definitely above average.

I picked up this book because I liked Laid Bare, and while browsing Amazon saw this book was on sale. Whoo-eee! I didn't realize it was a futuristic story, as I don't usually enjoy that sort of book, but this one was great. Sooo sexy.

Let me start out by saying, I FRIGGIN LOVED THIS BOOK. In case the message isn’t clear enough.

The female heroine is probably one of the best I have ever read. She is Sera Ayers, a female lieutenant in the Federation Military Corps. I loved her right away because she is not some weak female character waiting for a man to save her. I think that is one of the reasons I loved this book. It was not a typical romance where the man is the “shining knight coming to save the day”. She is kick ass, emotionally stable, beautiful and holds a very respectable position.

The two main male characters are Ash Walker and Brandt Pela. *drools* They are both military men as well. Sera and Ash were a loving couple years ago but because of an ancient political law, Ash could not be with Sera. Ash and Brandt come from very wealthy families that run the ‘verse and they have to abide by these laws. The ten years previous when Ash and Sera were a couple, Sera lovingly submitted to Ash’s dominance in the bedroom. Their breakup was heartbreaking for both of them. Sera never forgave Ash for following the tradition and marrying as his family dictated in an arranged marriage. It was all political. (in fact he married Brandt’s sister)

Skip ahead to present day and they are all in the military together and are ordered together as a team. Things start out really rough and Brandt seems to serve as the constant referee between them but it is clear that Sera and Ash still have deep unresolved feelings towards each other. Ash is now divorced. The undercover military operation that they are ordered on together takes them to another planet in the ‘verse where woman are like second rate citizens and men are allowed concubines. Sera is undercover as Brandt’s concubine lover. Since they could be videotaped they really act like lovers and then shortly thereafter become so.

This undercover operation is amazing and becomes really hot and really well written. Ash and Brandt are gorgeous and the story gets extra steamy because this situation ignites passion in all three of them. HOT HOT HOT! A total page turner. I have to also add, there is love. Lots of love.

Lauren Dane is one of my favorite authors of erotica and this review is quite biased because of that. I debated whether to give this a 3 or 4 but I just went ahead and given the higher rating.

First up, I'm not exactly a fan of sci-fi and futuristic stories, I don't seek them out but I do appreciate the ones who're written very well. While I'm just an outsider looking in, I found this story just ok, nothing to be ecstatic about. First up, I'm not exactly a fan of sci-fi and futuristic stories, I don't seek them out but I do appreciate the ones who're written very well. Now, on to the story...it had a lot of anguish, no matter how Sera tried to move on with her life for the past ten years, just one look from Ash and it all came rushing back. In this setting, Sera is an unranked woman and Ash is from a ranking Family (yes, spelled with a capital F), it's like a poor-to-middle class girl and rich boy love match, but due to an arranged marriage, he had to make her his mistress and marry out of duty to the Family, being the second son. It's a political marriage, and at the last minute, Sera backed out due to her pride.

I could understand where she's coming from and the author described Sera's emotions very well. She was miserable and found solace in the Federation's military corps until she rose from the ranks, she's also a competent soldier and has a lot of specialties. For a woman without rank, she has come very far from the girl Ash left. Now ten years later, she was pulled out of her team and assigned to work with Ash, and Brandt, an addition to the triad.

Things get interesting from there when they went undercover on a mission to seek the traitors.

There were a lot of discrimination and annoying characters here, and since it's Lauren Dane, it reminded me of her Chase Brothers series, only in a different setting. I know this review might not be helpful to others but to summarize it, if you're not into sci-fi, bdsm, kink, and m/m play, anal play, menage, then do not read this book.(less)

Not only does she have to fight the attraction of a lost love, but the new budding love she feels for Brandt.

First let me say that there is a lot of sex in this book. Not just a little, but a LOT. The steam just rolled off with each page. They went undercover with Sera playing Brandt’s concubine, so of course they had to be comfortable with each other, leading to some steamy scenes. But Ash still loves Sera and won’t let her go. The three share some extremely hot scenes, with Sera going into subspace it seemed every other page.

That was another things…I have never read a book where one woman goes into subspace so often! Sera does submit and it sounds divine, but she was so lost into subspace so many times.

The story was just ok. They trying to take down Imperialists and traitors within their system. No big surprises on who is behind it. While it was dramatic, it wasn’t suspenseful. I just didn’t feel a huge rush of adrenaline when the take down happened.

Ranked seems to be a big theme in this series. Ranked is where a founding family is part of their government. If you are not part of the Ranked, then you are not represented in the government and cannot marry between the two without the head of the family giving the ok. So here you have two Ranked men and an un-ranked woman. I generally don’t like stories like this. It gets me all political and pissy about concubine rights. But I suspended my thoughts on that subject and just tried to enjoy the story of a different society.

Overall, it is a good book. Not exceptional. I will be reading the books in this series, because my interest is completely peaked!(less)

This was one of those books I literally devoured. Sort of SF/Futuristic Romance, although intended more as erotica than romance. It describes the adventures (in and out of the bedroom) of two dominant men and one strong female character who likes to submit, but only in the bedroom.

Lauren Dane writes about passionate adults who are strong, believable characters – characters who come with baggage, and that’s incredibly hard to do well, but it makes for powerful reading when Lauren does it.

Lauren Dane made a fan out of me with her Brown Siblings series books and although Undercover has a lot of the same flavor with the M/F/M story line that is where the comparison stops. First porno I ever saw was some ridiculous 70's thing. You know the kind where the girl has run out of money and can't pay for her rent <cue "Bow chicka wow wa" music> so she's got to work it off...then after 20 minutes of watching I've totally forgotten what the plot was. As I was reading the first chapter of Undercover, I got a little worried about the heroine of the story. When she makes her first appearance it's a violent and explosive one and these are not characteristics which I find appealing. She is bitter and accusatory towards Ash and with good reason, yet I was praying she wouldn't continue to act this way through the whole story. Fortunately Sera is one of those characters that once she has expressed her opinion she is able to move on and make the best of a bad situation and so my opinion of her went up several notches.

Usually a certain amount of disbelief is required when reading a romance between two men and one woman. I felt that Dane did a good job at explaining why and how the emotional pull between Ash, Brandt and Sera worked. Brandt was needed to sort of smooth out the conflict between Ash and Sera and was the glue that helped hold it all together. However, I do feel that much of the emotional development especially between Brandt and Sera was rushed or happened much to quickly.

While I enjoyed the story and the characters, I felt that the reader was only exposed to it at a superficial level. I wasn't as emotionally connected to the characters as I could have been. The world building itself had lots of potential, but for the most part only scratched the surface. More depth from both the characters and the world building would have made an enjoyable book an outstanding book. I would recommend this book for those readers who enjoy a book more focused on the characters instead of the world building. (less)

The team is sent to scout on Nondal, a ‘Verse suspected to be the starting point of Imperialist attacks on Federation outposts.

Sera is outspoken, direct, doesn't waste time on unimportant issues or take crap from anyone, strong-willed, skilled. Her cover for the op is Sela Carter, concubine. Ash and Brandt are opposites in both appearance and demeanor. Ash is impulsive, explosive, short-fused, and dominant yet gentle and caring. Brandt is diplomatic, a mediator, seductive, and kind yet forceful. Their cover for the op are to form as little of a threat as possible by posing as spoiled, rich, good-for-nothing playboys, caring about nothing but spending money and pursuing their pleasures.

I must honestly admit that, especially in the beginning, I fell for Brandt much harder than I did for Ash because of Brandt's more laid back and mediative character. Ash’s more raw and unapologetic character did give me pause at the start especially where getting back Sera was concerned. Probably because I was relating to Sera's hurt and he sometimes came across as the rich spoiled boy, used to getting his way, he was supposed to portray for their covert op. Ash's actions in the past seem unforgivable to Sera. However, he redeemed himself beautifully in the course of the story. I began to like him more when he decided to take a step back and take it slow with Sera and I really started to melt for him when he showed more gentleness. By the time I’d read the first third of the book, Ash had grown on me and I liked him as much as I did Brandt from the beginning. Pressure from his family and his sense of duty led Ash to marry Brandt’s sister Kira and hurt Sera in the process by turning his back on their love. His deep, almost desperate, love for Sera and the impact of his harsh decision 10 years back made his earlier behavior more acceptable for me.

The balance of the triad was done very well and the three of them are a perfect match. I really liked Sera's character and personality. Even in her role as Sela, the concubine, she didn't lose her strength, fire or independence. Brandt was the connecting element that brought and kept Ash and Sera together. His seductive charm complemented Ash’s rough and raw charisma perfectly. Together they are a force no woman in her right mind could ever fathom to resist. Kudos to Ms. Dane for her characterization skills.

Quote to illustrate Sera's personality:
"I'm well aware as Brandt's best friend, you'll be allowed to show me sexual attention in Nondal. I will tell you right now to keep it to a minimum, or you'll be drawing back a bloody stump. Don't use this to manipulate me."

With an explosive and attention-grabbing start UNDERCOVER is a fascinating, intricate story, fraught with subdued emotions that are bound to come to the surface in an explosive way. The world building is done subtly and almost imperceptible. This is something that is highly appreciated by this reader. Lauren Dane didn't overwhelm me with massive info dumps but gave me relevant bits of information in the appropriate places, nicely mixed with dialogue, action and eroticism. She sets up the world and the plot in a simple and easy to understand manner. It mixes smoothly with the explicit and scorching hot sex she writes so well. The wrap-up of the plot was done nice and clean, just as the plot had been throughout the whole book.

The first sex scene was an m/m scene, which was unexpected but done so tastefully and fitting the characters that it didn’t bother me and the two male characters in this book immediately intrigued me. The sex scenes are very explicit yet done with such refinement they never go too far. The following quote reflects exactly how I feel about the whole m/m thing and why I am more of an m/f/m reader. Thank you Lauren Dane!

Sera: "Look I'm all about the boy-touching, let's make that clear. As long as I'm involved, I can watch, and you can come back to me, I'm on board."

Although this first book in Lauren Dane's Federation Series has a few elements that are situated on the outskirts of my comfort zone: m/m sex scenes and a futuristic setting, it totally worked for me and after just a few pages I was completely taken in by a wonderful story with strong characters, a very well executed plot and some erotic scenes that made my glasses steam up real good. I just couldn't stop reading this book. I had planned to read another book (in a different genre) at the same time and alongside this one but I couldn't. This book took possession of all my attention and left no room for any other book to the point I had to put the other book aside.

After just two books read, Lauren Dane is well on her way to form serious competition for my favorite erotic romance authors, regardless the subgenre (contemporary, paranormal or futuristic) and she is one of the few authors who writes m/m scenes I can really appreciate despite m/m not being one of my favorite tropes. The books by her hand that I have read so far are intense, emotional and scorching hot and with UNDERCOVER she added an intriguing plot arc that holds it ground amongst the avalanche of hotness. She does sexy and emotional in a perfect mix like few authors can.

Lauren Dane sets the pages on fire with this emotional, fast-paced and erotic futuristic ménage story. Her characters are strong, sexy and very well written. If you like scorching hot without pulling punches, a great set of characters and just the right amount of plot to let those characters shine, UNDERCOVER deserves a place on your reading list and on your bookshelves. Otherwise...Nah, she's all right ;-) She even makes a friend - Rina, of whom I'd love to read more, to find out what she did after the events in Nondal. With three more Federation novels following (Relentless has already been published, but I haven't read it yet), hopefully she'll show up. Meanwhile, Kira Pela-Walker is a stereotypical rich bitch who never seems to come out of her cardboard cut-out - she could've done with more shades of grey.

The triad of Ash, Sera and Brandt is definitely more interesting than if this had just been an m/f, but I felt like it wasn't quite complete. Ash and Brandt clearly love Sera more than they love each other, and Sera loves them both equally. Whilst Sera definitely expresses her fantasy (and readers') of watching the two men shag each other, they don't. There's some hot stuff, but not full-on shagging. Kind of a disappointment. The explanation of the men both being Dominant seems reasonable, but I'm not sure.

The Family laws of the Known Universes are completely fecking annoying, and thus totally understandable why Sera is so pissed off that people treat her as if below them because she's unranked. But the 'Verses themselves are rather fascinating. Nondal has some kind of artificial environment, being under a dome...kind of reminds me of the Diamondillium in one of those multi-part Futurama specials. Only there's no genticles here ;-) But despite Nondal being mentioned as a tourist haven for its space light phenomenon, that event doesn't actually occur during the novel. Which is a damn shame, because I wanna see it! Or, in this case, read about it. (Hey, I've never even seen Aurora Borealis - I live below the equator.)

I very much so understand why this won the 2008 Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice for Best Futuristic Erotic Romance - it's pretty darn good.(less)

A decade prior joining the military, Sera and Ash had been long term live-in lovers. Unfortunately their relationship ended when Ash was forced by his high ranking family to marry a woman who was of equal class. Sera found out in the worst way, via a video broadcast and his betrayal wounded her to the core.

Now divorced from his wife who has remarried, Ash wants Sera back. She, needless to say, bears a simmering resentment toward him. Ash has a dominant attitude, an arrogance that I have to admit at the beginning found tough to take. However, he does recognize with the help of his friend and fellow officer Brandt that if he is going to win back Sera’s trust and love he will have to back off. When Ash and Sera were intimately involved he was the dominant and she the submissive within the confines of their home. He therefore feels he can nurture Sera’s need to be dominated in the bedroom again. After 10 years of military service, Sera has changed.

I liked Brandt Pela from the moment he was introduced in the story. While he is an equal to Ash with respect to strength of character and is definitely an Alpha male, he is also charismatic and has an ability to mediate when things get tough between Ash and Sera. Brandt is immediately attracted to Sera’s beauty and intelligence. Ash recognizes this and soon realizes he wants both of them. You see, Brandt and Ash are more than friends, they are two dominate males who have a deep bond and have enjoyed a sexual relationship.

Through amazing graphic imagery and descriptive prose Ms. Dane takes readers inside the Federation of Known Universes. A place where ships line up in space ports to slide through portals to distant worlds with their own societies and laws. Ms. Dane has developed a class system where a small number of high ranking families enjoy wealth, power and control over millions of people and ‘verses’.

As far as Ash and Brandt’s families are concerned they are wealthy playboys enjoying a carefree frivolous existence and all the trappings of wealth. Ash and Brandt have used this misconception to their advantage as they are actually committed officers working undercover to thwart the Imperial threat.

Sera, Brandt and Ash travel to the planet Nodal a very insular world with a stratified class system that wouldn’t allow her to move about without a man or husband in attendance. Sera therefore transforms herself and becomes ‘Sela’, Brandt’s concubine. This way she can move about, listening and working with the men collecting as much intel as possible.

Ms. Dane weaves an exciting suspense subplot into the narrative of this novel which involves high ranking family members with the imperialists who are attacking outposts and killing innocents. The heroes and heroine of this story are rocked to the core by the depth of treachery and treason that has taken place.

At it's heart "Undercover" is the story, of the relationship that develops between these three people. It is not only about Brandt and Sera's new love, but she and Ash gradually become lovers reacquainted. Their relationship evolves into a ménage, but not without all the insecurities, jealousies and difficulties one would expect in this type of situation. There is bondage and submission, graphic ménage à trois scenes and some very light m/m interaction in this novel. However I have to say, I’ve always enjoyed Lauren Dane’s voice, she has a way of penning love scenes in a sensual, and moving way.

If you enjoy a good erotic science fiction suspense, laced with lots of action and excitement you may like to give “Undercover” a try. I have my copy of "Relentless", the next book in Lauren Dane's "Federation Series" and I will read it soon. "Phantom Corps: Insatiable", is to be released in July and I'm really looking forward to that story too.

Sera and Ash had an all consuming love affair ten years ago. Sera and Ash’s relationship was based on much love and respect, for Sera allowed Ash total control over her body and tapped into her inhibitions. Sera loved that Ash could dominate her in the bedroom and loved being his submissive. But things ended very badly between the two. Because Ash comes from a high-ranking family, he had to sacrifice their love because it was expected that he would marry a women who was of the same station as he. All he could offer Sera was a position as his mistress, which is quiet respectable in his circles. Sera told him to shove it and walked out of his life. Both have never forgotten each other and Ash loves her more than ever. He is now divorced and wants Sera back.

Because the third member of Ash’s covert ops team retired, he and his Para-Commander, Brandt Pela, who also happens to be his ex-brother in law and close friend, need someone to fill the empty position. Because Sera is so skilled, she has been assigned to join their team. The Federation’s enemy, the Imperialists, have attacked various outposts and have obtained very classified data. They have tracked the stolen information to a planet called Nondal. Ash, Brandt and Sera must go undercover to Nondal. Sera freaks out because she must go as a concubine to either one of the men since Nondal is very patriarchal and women are seen as play things. Ash assumes Sera will be his concubine, which will enable him to reach into Sera’s heart. Sera is not falling for it and rather be with Brandt. Brandt accepts even though Ash and Sera may still have to be hands on for the sake of the mission.

Ash is hurt that Sera won’t give him a second chance and knows he has a great deal of work cut out for him. He must prove to Sera that there is no other woman for him. And you would think the guy would be jealous because Brandt will be intimate with Sera in ways that only Ash wants to be. But Ash isn’t. Ash and Brandt have a very special relationship where they have enjoyed each other sexually. He feels that it is something very special for Brandt to share Sera with him. Knowing the man he cares for will be with the woman he loves excites him. He only hopes that Sera will welcome two men into pleasuring her, and give pleasure in return.

Sera knows she has no choice when it comes to Ash because if she is only intimate with Brandt and refuses Ash, it could jeopardize their mission. She gives into Brandt, which at first is a bit awkward, but all too soon he breaks through her defenses and from that she welcomes Ash into her bed. Soon these three are not just acting for the sake of their mission, but they genuinely begin to care for one another. Most of the time Sera is riding Brandt into orgasm or Ash is driving into her. And then when both men want to share her at the same time, Sera is so sexed beyond belief that she can hardly move.

But even as Sera has fallen in love with Brandt, and admits to Ash that she still loves him more than her own life, they still have an important job to do. Not only are they being watched and listened to every moment of the day, but the enemy may be closer than they think. Is it just coincidence that Ash’s ex-wife Kira and her husband have arrived on Nondal? Or do they have something more sinister planned?

Undercover is a great sci-fi romp that is heavy on the sex. The action and suspense is more secondary. Brandt, Sera and Ash make a great team. Sera is no TSTL (to stupid to live) heroine and even as she is deeply involved with these two men, she doesn’t let them walk all over her. All three give and take equally, and because of that, the love scenes really work. Sera is able to handle these two men. She says what is on her mind and won’t take any crap from anyone. My favorite character was Brandt because of his loving nature for both Sera and Ash. He is a great guy who shows his love proudly. The way he is with Ash and Sera is really sweet. It took me a bit longer to warm up to Ash. There was just something off about him, as if he wasn’t too well rounded, perhaps a bit too one-dimensional. It may have just been my own personal preference, rather than Lauren’s writing of him. I found Sera to be very believable, and her emotions over Ash’s betrayal came through nicely. I enjoyed Ash more when he was having fun with both Sera and Brandt at the same time, rather than one on one with Sera. But even though I may have a small issue with one of the main characters, I still felt the love story to be very well written. Who would have thought that a woman being shared by two good friends could be so much fun?

Like I said before, the sex scenes are not your typical vanilla ones you may read. There are a great deal of various positions and holes being filled. Even so, Lauren can write some steamy sex that may cross some lines but nothing too uncomfortable for my tastes. There was bondage, sex play and some domination games. Sounds like a great time, right?

Undercover is an easy read for those who enjoy characters who are not afraid of sex exploration in a unique type of setting. Sex in space has been giving a whole new meaning in Undercover with the creative story writing skills of Lauren Dane.(less)

Quickie read.
Futuristic erotica.
Interesting world.
Some emotional angst under all the sex,sex,sex.
Did I mention there was lots of sex?
Good sex scenes, though.
M/F/M sex.
And not just M/F/M sex, but M/F/M true love.
Doesn't seem like the same author who wrote Giving Chase.
Didn't like that one.
Liked this one.
Will read the sequel.

This is really a 4.5 star book. I always enjoy Lauren Dane's work because, while her stories are classed as erotica, she tells a great tale first and formost. The sex is encased with love so anything some class as "kinky" seems very normal. In fact, her characters discuss that very thing: anything between consenting adults in love is OK.
