The Scottish biologist and sociologist, Patrick Geddes, was also known as an innovative thinker in the fields of urban planning and education. He was responsible for introducing the concept of "region" to town and country planning.

This book is based on a two-part paper presented to the the British Sociological Society in London in 1904 and 1905.
