I'm moving this off of my "reading" list because while it's fun to poke through it's not something I'm planning on ever reading straight through cover-to-cover.
I do enjoy it though. Lotsa neat little trivia about the recordings. Some music I'm very familiar with. Some I've only touched on occasionally and a lot that I've never heard of some of which I'll be tracking down.

Let's agree not to quibble about whether our favorite recordings made it into the list. Just the sheer scope and breadth of this book would make it a useful resource. But Moon goes well beyond scope and provides a means of discovering great music that most of us would be unlikely to discover on our own. So to evaluate this book it is better not to ask 'does it include what I like', but rather 'does it help me find great music to listen to'.

Music fans and scholars
This just might be the single best music review source I've read and I've read a lot of them. Moon, the critic at the Philadelphia Enquirer (and a frequent contributor to NPR) succeeds on just about every level, delivering perceptive, scholarly entries on albums from not only the world of rock/pop, but jazz, electronica, classical and world music. The sheer breadth of his taste is amazing and, as such, the book is destined to turn up new nuggets for just about any listener. The entries work as...more

This book was mentioned on "Sunday Morning" on CBS around Christmas time - since I am the happy owner of a Kindle (gift from an observant son!) I downloaded the "teaser" and then I bought the hardcopy. This is a tremendous resource; both as a reminder of music I have known and loved and as a means of discovering music and artists previously unknown to me. I am having great fun with thie reference work! No judgment, just the joy of new listening as well as the memory of fond l...more

I've discovered a lot of great music by scanning through this book. It isn't exhaustive of course, because that book would be too big to carry...but it is a great collection of "must hear" music. If you are a gospel fan I'm afraid you will be disappointed because gospel music (and other religious musical genres) in general is not well represented in this book. Other than that, it is a great musical reference for any music lover's library.

A completely subjective and arbitrary list, but one that certainly resonates with those who love music. Tom Moon has the credentials to back up his choices, and although I might have omitted a few in favor of others, it is a great jumping off point for starting your own similar list and downloading a few artists you may not have heard.

I thought the choices werent equitable- some genres being neglected, and a slight overemphasis on jazz and blues, may be of author's own taste. So if you are well acquainted with Jazz you would want to skip this but if you are looking for a decent list of great Jazz recordings, along with a few other greats this would do it.

My son gave me this book for Christmas. Since I'm a musicholic, it was the perfect gift. I have to get a move on because I figured there were still about 200 albums I need to hear. If you like music and are looking to explore different types, or are just a list type, check this book out.

The title pretty much says it all.
I read through nearly 90% of the entries, taking notes along the way. But the library wanted it back so I had to skim the rest. Darn them.
I found a lot new music to listen to and try and pondered why Moon choose the right artist at times but the wrong albums. My personal opinion obviously. (M.I.A. is awesome but Kala is the best, not Arular) He also lists 108 recordings at the end that he didn't get to list in the main book.

I am probably not going to do more than pick this up occasionally to check on artists I hear or remember. Right now I like what I have seen..look for something more in a few months.

OK, I've really only been through the list and not read every summary of every album. It's a great balanced list and I look forward to referencing it as I add to my collection.

This is going to be a mainstay on my list, thanks to my brother. If you've got a napster account and time to kill, I highly recommend it. :)

An excellent reference for those of us who love making lists of our favorite things/best of/etc. Not only are albums greatly represented, but single recordings are included in the conversation. Songs like Planet Rock, I Feel Love and I Heard It Through the Grapevine are listed as must-hears.
There's also a very healthy dosage of classical music; while I'm not much of a classical music enthusiast, I did appreciate the inclusion of composers like Samuel Barber and Edward Elgar into the...more

I actually listened to the NPR interview with Tom Moon on "All Songs Considered" and I was glad to hear that he went out of his comfort Zone to be as unbiased as possible in his choices. It covers all genres from blues to opera to world music, and besides a passionate few paragraphs on what makes each recording great, Moon also gives suggestions of where to go if you want to go deeper into the groove.

Not a book to pick up and read from cover to cover. It has opened my eyes to music that I thought I knew but never really listened to critically. I have two modes of operation when I read it... Looking for a specific artist to find out what Mr Moon thinks is the best/most representative recording(s) created. Alternatively I'll just pick it up and open to a random page to learn about something that would have never caught my eye on its own.
Great book for a music lover.

There is a lot of good music here, and a fan freshly come to music will learn a lot by listening through these selections. Overall, however, the selection tends toward too many obscure works that are critically anointed. When are music writers going to admit that a lot of artists are best approached through a greatest hits package? If you like jazz and blues, you'll like this selection: both take up more of the spots in this book than I would give them.

Tom Moon like many of the books I review is a good friend of mine so you may say that I am biased. Fair enough, I probably am but that in no way diminishes the scope of his achievement of the remarkable value of the is book. If you love music, and what cultured person does not, you MUST read this book. I keep it on my bed and before I go to sleep every night I dig into it with renewed glee. Join me and hats off to the guy I'm proud to call "mr moon".

I first heard of this book on a podcast, where the author was on talking about the selection process and playing tracks from some of his choices. I really enjoyed reading through the list though. Interesting trivia about the selections. The format of the list was useful too, as each album had suggestions for further albums from the same artist, other artists similar to the selection, and then a "stretch" selection that might also appeal.
