As an aspiring athlete who identifies strongly with the title (which I'll admit took me aback a bit at first) I found this book to be a great resource. It's full of encouragement, mystique-busting information (for instance describing the details of what transitions are and explaining much of the lingo) and really practical advice. It's also often extremely funny - I didn't expect to laugh out loud while reading about triathlon training! I've been thinking of doing a sprint triathlon for over a y...more

I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time. I run, I bike, I swim, and yet I'm still the weight that I am and this book tells me to forget that and train anyway.
Don't let her account of her many ailments throw you off at first - she is leading to a very good point about working around these things and knowing your limits and surpassing what you thought you could do.
It's a feel good book that doesn't get all sappy.

fuck yeah dude. this totally got me through my triathlon. she's all like, "yeah, you're going to do dumb stuff like fall and be sweaty and muddy and gross and you're going to look like an asshole. and people are going to take one look at you and think you can't do shit because you're a fatty. but you know what? fuck them and do it anyways." really realistic and awesome and inspiring. a little light on the technical stuff, though, but there's a million other books out there for tha

What a great book. I too am slow, fat and want to be a triathlete. The author paints a picture of how it is to be involved in a sport where the majority are thin, fast and amazing creatures. I really liked the fact that although she is slow she still finished and was happy about finishing. She is also very greatful to the people who help out at the events. I have tried to incoporate that into the events that I have been involved in.

Seeing as the title made a lot of sense, I decided to give it a read at the bookstore a couple of weeks ago. It's certainly not written for those who are looking for technical guidance in the sport. However, it was pretty funny and gives some good advice on how to not look like a complete ass your first time out. Or at least less of an ass...things get tricky when a wetsuit is involved.

Learned a lot from this book. I think the biggest newest idea for me was the strategy of planning out your race. I guess I fit into the "undisciplined" category on the back book cover:
"...for anyone who may be out of shape, undisciplined, or otherwise unprepared to enter a triathlon but is curious to try."

Loved the sense of humor this author shared in her real-life experience of training for and completing her first triathlon, with less than the 'text-book' athletic apptitude to start with. Helped me put my own experience into perspective, and laugh at some of my own self-created hysteria. :-)

A great look at competing when you're not an ironman triathlete. She explores everything from squeezing into a wetsuit to preparations on race day. If you're an inspiring triathlete this is truly inspiration reading and hilarious to boot.

This woman has shared the story that I wanted to tell for myself. At points I feel that we are kindred spirits. I think she's a little more dedicated to training than me, though.

Have heard so many good things about this book, and finally saw it at the library this morning. Really is inspiring to folks like me, that is, everyday couch potatoes.

I'm two out of three: slow, fat and training for my first 5K in a few weeks. With a title like this, I love the author already!

I resemble that title, though I prefer Rubenesque. I wouldn't call this a training guide but it sure is a funny read.

Enjoyable. Good overview of triathlons without going too far off the deep-end for a beginner.
