The first book in the series, LAZY TOMMY PUMPKINHEAD (1966) concerns slothful Tommy Pumpkinhead, who lives in an "electric house" that takes care of all his needs. In the morning, Tommy's bed lifts to the ceiling and plunks him into a tub of water. He then slides down a chute to get into his clothes and is fed breakfast from an "eating machine." When an electrical outage o...more

They just don't make picture books like this one anymore. Published in 1966 this is a cautionary tale about living the lazy life. Most picture books today would shy away from the bluntness of the message, but I could see an audience for this in some of today's kids. The story itself is ridiculous enough that it could be a fun read aloud to the right kids.

Oh, I wish I could find this book (to borrow or reasonably priced!). I read it as a child and just remembered it the other day, when my kids were wishing that they could invent a machine to do all their chores. I remember the illustrations, the scrambled eggs on Tommy's toes, etc. Ahhh, nostalgia.

This was the very first book I remember picking out on my own and checking out at the public library. I absolutely loved it and the concept of a boy living in an automatic house. It especially becomes delightful when every thing goes haywire!

Such an impression this book made on me. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a reasonably priced copy for our house. Our library doesn't stocked it any longer. I have a strong memory of his breakfast on his toes, so funny!

One of the first books my parents ever bought me. Forgot about this little gem for many, many years.

Sadly my copy is long gone, and copies that still exist are quite expensive.

Awesome concept. I have to admit, I would love to have these tools to help me wake up in the morning. Not so crazy about walking up the stairs all day though.

Probably my all-time favorite story book as a child. Out of print. Copies available in Amazon for up to $250! Wish I'd kept mine.

I just revised my rating on this one from 4 to 5 stars. Why? I realized that any book that made such a big impression on me that I remembered it 30 years later had to be pretty amazing. That said, I haven't seen a copy of this book in at least 30 years, but I remember the pictures of what happens when Lazy Tommy's electric house goes haywire, dumping him out of his bed upside down, and the robot arms squirting toothpaste on his toes. I remember checking this one out of our school library over an...more

Funny favorite from my childhood. Maybe better for 4-5 yo and up, intellectually.

I just borrowed a copy from our local library. Very nostalgic.

An unauthorized ebook version has been available online for several years. If you can't find a physical copy you can search for that.

There is also a "Daisy" ebook version available on archive.org.

Nice depiction of bacon.
