I didn't like the start of the book because the protagonist, Lily Walsh, was initially portrayed as a person with low self-esteem. She hails from Kashien, a fictitious village where women are second-class citizens. She apologizes a lot and lowers her eyes whenever a man is around. I thought the story is set in the 1930s or something.
However, as the story unfolded, Lily transformed into a lovely young woman who eventually found love. Her romance with Gabriel Kapaia...is a godly one. It's sweet a...more

I have read Lori Wick's "Californian series" and loved it. After reading the summary of this book I thought it sounded really interesting, especially since I love Hawaii. It was not what I expected at all. This book was very dull and boring. The characters were very unrealistic and the country that Lilly is from is also made up. I did not like how the characters felt that they had to apologize constantly for everything and anything. No one is that perfect! Also, Lilly is described very childlike...more
When I read Lori Wick I'm always amazed at how she beautifully incorporates romance stories with Bible study. There have been many books I've read that were "Christian Romance" novels but they were more romantic than Christian. Then I discovered Lori Wick who focused more on the character's spiritual growth than the romance within the stories.

Lily's process of becoming more independent and learning to stand up to her father's unreasonable domination, and other men, was interesting and sometimes pathetically sad. I liked this book as far as the story line goes - even though near the end I was feeling that she had covered it completely and wondered why it wasn't over yet. But for a Christian author, I find Lori Wick so preachy that religion overwhelms the story after a while.

I actually really liked this book. I got to from Amy and I totally rolled my eyes. But I started reading and I really liked it. I think the thing that shocked me the most but at the same time made me like the book, was the authors explicitness in talking about sex for the married couples. I really liked that sex wasn't this evil thing that never got talked about. I found the main girl a little too perfect. Like she speaks 3 languages, translates the Bible, and is more intelligent than your avera...more
I loved this story! The author is Christian, so even though her book is a romance novel, it was totally clean and free from immorality and profanity. That's always nice! She is also very outspoken, through her writing, in favor of Christian values.
The story itself was really awesome. At first I had a hard time with the main character because at the beginning of the story she is so submissive and humble it's annoying. (I just know I'm going to get struck down for saying that). But it's like, come...more

It's interesting to read about a missionary's daughter's first trip to Hawaii, a totally different culture from where she was raised. A family takes her in and teaches her that it's okay to look a man in the eye and that she should tell others what she needs.
I also found it interesting that more than one family lives in the same house. A neat way for the kids to grow up - cousins living with them! but also so different than the rest of America. I don't know if it's good or bad that we have our o...more

I read this book as it was supposed to be all about dealing with intercultural issues, as the main character is raised in a remote location in an Asian country, and then tries to adjust to life in the U.S. While the book starts out with some promise, showing how the main character had to make huge adjustments, it then deterioriated into a less-than-believable and not too well crafted love story.

Whenever I see Christian books for sale in a thrift store, I always pick them up, but I think I need to stop getting Lori Wick. I just don't enjoy the stories. Although some books have such ridiculously contrary heroines (they call it feisty but it's just obnoxious), Lily was too far the other way. Her extreme submission was annoying. Just not a fan.
This book would fall under the Christian novel heading. It is about life when things don't go as planned and someone disappoints her parent. Two different cultures are involved and the book deals with the differences as the father believes they are. The struggles are real struggles when one wants to hold on to their culture's beliefs.
I don't know what I was thinking. I really don't like these sorts of books. I suppose that for the genre, this was pretty good. But the constant preaching (and I believe it all) wore me down, not to mention the unbelievably too-good-to-be-true characters.
At least I spent a long Sunday afternoon relaxing and not thinking about the heat.

Bamboo & Lace by Lori Wick tells of a young woman who had lived in another country for her entire life. Then she goes and visits her brother in Hawaii. I love how she finds the real Lily while she is there. She also learns many new things in her time there. Most of all, she learns about love, and trust.
One of my favorite Christian fiction books in a long time. It is one of those books where the characters are contributing to society and to people around them. (I almost gave it only four stars because at the end the main character accomplishes an unrealistic amount. No need to make the rest of us feel like slackers!)
I really enjoyed this book until the end. It just went on and on. It was like watching the last Lord of the Rings movie where we all thought it should have ended LONG before it did. It was very romantic but so drawn out.
Didn't mean to, but I've read a lot of dark, twisty books this summer. Need a pick-me-up.
