There is a reason that Jane Austen and the Bronte Sisters are authors whose works are read, re-read, and turned into movies: they create vivid worlds where likeable, headstrong characters live.
Then there is this book, by Christian author Lori Wick. It will probably not be read beyond her faithful readership, nor will it ever be optioned for a film starring Kate Winslet.
The setup is rather trite: redhead Cassandra reads books (often in foreign languages) to temporarily blind Alexander Tate, and...more

I feel terrible, but I just can't finish this book. A friend of mine let me borrow her copy and I was excited because I had been wanting to read it for sometime (the product description on Christianbook really intrigued me), but I'm 1/3 of the way through and I simply cannot connect with anyone in the story. I've never read any Lori Wick before so I can't speak for her writing style, but the way she jumps from one characters POV to the next (even repeatedly changing the POV within the same conve...more

Lori Wick it one of my favorite authors. She is a christian fiction author who writes of things we can relate to in our everyday lives.
Book number 3 in this series is all about self doubt and lacking self esteem. Tate has had an injury that has taken his sight, hopefully temporarily. He's told to rest so they go to Collingbourne (Tate and his aunt). While there his aunt asks Cassandra to come read to him. She agrees and begins to have feelings for him. However, she's convinced that any feelings she believes he has for her will vanish if he ever regains his sight and gets to see her.

Ok so here goes.
I liked the plot line... It had great potential, but Lori Wick has absolutely no sense of character development.
A true character needs to be flawed in order to be "heroic."
She must have failed British History because she did barely any research. And why aren't there any REAL people? Like... why must everything be SOOOO perfect?? Geez, I thought I loved this author, but when I started getting away from her books because her writing was cramping my writing style(yeah, I'm an asp...more

This was by far the one that gave me so much insight. I wish I wrote down my thoughts in my journal while reading this book. It also made me want to go back and read about Jonah. God is so amazing in how he can catch our attention and turn it back to him. I truly enjoyed this book and it's going to be sad when this series ends after I read The Pursuit. Thank you Lori and I hope you keep writing... I enjoy your books so much.
"Do you ever run from God? I don't mean literally, although that might be the case. I'm talking about the times you ignore what you're supposed to do. That's a form of running from God. How about the sin you know it's time give up? Guarding that sin and pretending you're not is running from God."
breezy enjoyable read that also encourages you spiritually. nice.

If you love English period books, The Visitor the third in Lori Wick's English Garden series continues a great storyline.
I got this book from the library without paying attention to the genre sticker on the spine. It said Christian Fiction. I think the religious references bogged the book down. I am all for spirituallity in literature and having God save the day but too many references to daily prayor and such that don't really further the dialogue or the story are no better than excessive references to brushing you teeth and what was served for each meal and geting dresses and going to bed etc etc.

Very fun! My only complaint is that the summary on the inside front flap was entirely misleading. However, the premise of Tate and Cassie's meeting and courtship is beautiful, and their doubts are effective in advancing and complicating the plot. Love, love, love the Steele brothers! (And I want someone to marry Henry Steele - there has to be a way to get another book in this series, right?
