This is, by far, the best book of the Sunrise series. I skimmed through the Bailey/Cody and Katy/Dane stroylines, but the storyline surrounding Ashley and Landon drew me in. The tale was truly heartwrenching, yet hopeful, and I found myself in tears at the end. I don't see the Baxter family as "realistic", and I do think that the ending, though sad, is a little rosey when compared with real-life stories of families in similar situations. I won't go into detail for fear of spoiling the plot. I wi...more
Although written in such a soap opera way, I love how the characters deal with difficult issues such as Bailey and her mother dealing with a teenager that is pregnant, parents who are over the top at their children's sporting events, budget cuts affecting the theater, and sisters expecting at the same time. A very emotional part of this book was Ashley having to deal with the results of her pregnancy test especially with her sister, Brooke who is a doctor. I loved how the family dealt with the c...more
This book is full of the struggles that threaten to destroy her characters, like all of her others. I have to admit that I was disappointed with a couple of aspects of this installment. I did not feel that Dayne and Katy’s story was true to their characters. They begin to distrust one another and their marriage becomes unstable after only being married for 1 month. I believe that they have both gone through too many trials before this time to be breaking down so quickly.

This story was a sad one but also very touching and healing. The author did a great job drawing me in to the story and I felt the emotion. She is truly an expert at making your heart connect with her characters. I want to be a Baxter. They have an awesome, yet realistic family with real-life problems. One of the underlying themes of this book is the importance of communication. The author shows the fallout when people close off their hearts to each other and she also shows the beauty of allowing...more
Great Christian fiction novel. About the Baxter family - John is the dad, Ashley and Landon are going through a heart wrenching pregnancy, Kari and Ryan are also pregnant with a baby girl, Dayne and Katy are struggling newlyweds in the Hollywood industry, Peter and Brooke are doctors, Luke and his wife are supportive of Ashley. Good story with a lot of lessons about how Christians walk through life and deal with difficult and painful circumstances, but lean on their faith to get them through and...more
When I first read Karen Kingsbury's books a couple years ago, I just fell in love with the plot lines. She had an amazing way of incorporating God and love all into one. It was a clean cut passionate romance dealing with the real issues of life. However, going back and reading a continuing series of the first set of books I read, I realize how extremely cheesy everything is. Although the emotions that the characters feel are real, it just has a really cheesy aspect to it. But still, I loved it a...more
I've never read any of Karen Kingsbury's books but the gals at church are fans so I picked this one up. I didn't realize that I was jumping in mid-series but was able to learn about the Baxter family fairly quickly. Several different story lines are going on at once but they are easy to follow. The family is challenged by some major struggles and their faith helps them to survive them. I'm interested enough in one of the challenges that I've now checked out the last book in the series to see how...more
A very moving, inspirational and insightful read. While the parts with Katy and Dayne in this one was somewhat frustrating and I can't help but feel that it was unnecessarily so, the storyline with the unborn baby suffering from a fatal defect was truly inspirational albeit painfullly sad. It reminded me that in all things...truly all things God works for the good of those who seek Him though we may not see it or have enough faith to believe it. An excellent read portraying the struggles of a fi...more
SUMMER, book two in the third Baxter saga was definitely filled with emotion, and a little disillusionment.
The joy of two Baxter sisters expecting within weeks of each other is quickly doused when we find out Ashley’s pregnancy could be a difficult one. This storyline had a lot of emotion packed into it. But, what I found disappointing with SUMMER was the storyline surrounding Dayne and Katy Matthews.

Summer was my favorite of all the Kingsbury books I have ever read. I have a great deal of ambivalence about Karen Kingsbury books. Generally I find the stories soap-operaish, juvenile, often contrived and unrealistic, and full of factual error that shows inadequate or indifferent research. Often I find the characters immature and get disgusted when 30-ish Christians respond emotionally and hurtfully to a contrived difficulty with the maturity of a 13-year old. They do way too much emotional rea...more

This Kingsbury is the one that has elicited the most tears from me. It has the realism that tragedy happens in even the best of families, those who try so hard to do what is right. And also shows some of the blessings that come with a difficult trial. A little close to home for me, since one of my children was feared to have a similar condition, but he was born well and whole (I only had to worry for a day before a second opinion declared him to be perfect!). Another great Kingsbury book!
I listened to the book on CD in the car. It was a drama detailing the history of the Baxter family, including a story of neural tube defects and the impact that fame can have on a marriage. The story and the characters were well put together, but it is not generally the type of book I like to read. It was very emotional and compelling. I ended up with mascara all over my face. I did like the morality in the story and how God provided for the characters.

A young woman, pregnant with her 3rd child, discovers that her baby has a neural tube abnormality which will result in its death soon after birth. The extended family is devastated, but agrees to pray for a miralcle. Her sister, a doctor, tries to persuade her to abort. She is horrified and a huge rift comes between the sisters. When the child is born, the entire family is there to celebrate the short life of the child. Very sad.
This is a great book - HOWEVER - had I known what it was about, I wouldn't haven chosen to read it now, while pregnant with my second child. I just knew it was the second book in the series, so I happily jumped in when I finished the first one.
It is very well written, and the storyline can't help but touch your heart.
But I really don't recommend it to anyone who is pregnant.

tearjerker. the ending had me sobbing. as her usual in the baxter series, the family goes through its issues, dayne and katy dealing with hollywood drama while being newlyweds, ashley and kari are pregnant at the same time, and at a ultrasound one of them find out bad knews of the fatal kind, so theres moral delima of abortion or going through the pregnancy.
I really wanted to like this book, but I had a hard time getting caught up in the story. I listened to it in audible form while driving to work, and the voices used for the characters were just plain awful. Maybe that was distracting me. I finished the book and was interested in the ending, but can't say I'll run out to purchase another of her books.
Love Karen Kingsbury! Everything she writes touches my heart. There's always love and family issues that need resolution. God is always the center of that resolution. She has a way of sharing scripture that brings it to a new light for me. I just plain feel good when I read her books. They are an easy read...a curl up in your favorite chair and just enjoy!
Nobody could say it better than Mrs. Kingsbury when she said "Whew, that was a tough one." When I started into this book I could not imagine the hardships in the story to come. The story was so beautifully written and so exceedingly real that I actually cried at a couple of the more emotional points. Emotions were strong and this story was beautiful even if it was so sad and hard to read through. I can only hope that things will get better from here.
I loved Karen Kingsbury from the minute I read her Redemption series! her books have grabbed my attention to where I don't' want to put the book down. I've laughed & cried It's amazing how an author can make you feel as though you were the main character of the book. Summer was another amazing but to add to the collection!
This is a tough season for some of the adult children of John Baxter. Dane & Katie are newlyweds, but have agreed to make a reality show of the filming of their movie "But Then Again No". Katie believes letting the paparazzi in their personal life will eventually get them to back off, but Dane knows better from living the Hollywood lifestyle prior to meeting Katie. Unfortunately, the paparazzi do everything in their power to try to split them up.

This book, again is one of Faith, Hope and Love! Karen Kingsbury has the ability to draw you in to the story line and keep you there from cover to cover! She is truly one of the greatest Christian authors there is. Summer is a time of relaxation, heartache and longing for times past and looking toward what is to come!
This book is a good book because as I was reading I could actually feel the same emotions they were feeling it made me feel like I was right there in the middle of the story along with them a boy named Cody stayed with the flanigans and he liked bailey very much and he loved football and I also liked the part about Katy and Dayne where they set a date to get married and where they went on their honeymoon and everything it was so awesome I would definately highly recommend this book to anyone
Karen Kingsbury's book, Summer,is an exceptionally well-written book with three story lines that will keep you turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next.
The most pivotal story of the three focus around Ashley Baxter Blake and finding out there is a problem in her pregnancy and how her faith as well as her extended families faith is stretched. I found myself literally crying at the resolution of the story and silently praying that it would end differently. Karen Kingsbury has a...more
