The queen of children's Jewish literature, Barbara Cohen, wrote this book in the 1980s about a thirteen-year-old who doesn't want a bar mitzvah because he has to spend too much preparation time for something that is meaningless to him. He carries out his plan to get out of Hebrew school but it backfires when he finds out he isn't allowed to complete his preparations for the ceremony afterall. This was a difficult book to find but was well worth it to read more of Barbara Cohen's body of works.
Barbara Cohen (1932-1992) was the author of several acclaimed picture books and novels for young readers, including The Carp in the Bathtub, Yussel's Prayer: A Yom Kippur Story, Thank You, Jackie Robinson, and King of the Seventh Grade.More about Barbara Cohen...
