It was high time that I read a western, and I have seen the Academy Nominated short film of the Tonto Woman and enjoyed it. Plus, this is a collection of short stories, so ir seemed a good place to start. I liked a few of the stories, but I found that too much of my brain power was invested is trying to keep the names of the characters straight, navigating my way around the endless and (to me) unnecessary brand names of guns, rifles and horse tack that I got bogged down and found myself skimming More...

This book was not as interesting as i thought it would be.

Stories did not grab interest, better to read ( for ex:) Olive Oatman's true story.

I read the Tonto Woman story, but I'm not sure I even finished this book. I'm not a big fan of short stories.

Elmore Leonard likes to use as simple language as possible. I am not sold on the extent to which it's taken here, though; on the plus side, this keeps the stories short and fast-paced, but plot points are easy to miss (this guy could make an erupting volcano seem humdrum) and the stories often begin unremarkably and end anti-climactically. The collection is hit and miss, and while the hits are quite good, there are only three or four of them out of over a dozen. I enjoy Leonard's later thrillers More...

I only ended up reading Three-ten to Yuma and a few others, but they were all great. Each had a bit of a twist to the characters and their motivation that kept the stories interesting and unpredictable even though they were all about essentially the same thing (as far as I could tell).

Masterful brevity. Leonard never uses seven words when he can use four.
