I probably read this when I was 11 or 12 and I only remember two things from it: the female character bending over so that her bikini-covered breasts' honey-coloredness became visible, and the word "ampules." This is the kind of book you should read when you're 11 because you'll get much more out of it.

Gail and David Sanders are honeymooning in Bermuda, enjoying the scuba diving. They dive on a wreck near their hotel and come up with, among other things, a glass ampule filled with yellow liquid. Word gets around the island quickly and the Sanders find themselves first being coaxed and then threatened for information. Their only chance at surviving the local gang is working with Treece, a wreck diver who is after the Spanish treasure in the same spot.

If you've read Benchley's Jaws, More...

Perfectly acceptable for car-listening, but nothing great. It did really sound more like a movie than a book. A couple are honeymooning in Bermuda. While scuba-diving, they stumble across an ampule that contains some sort of drugs (morphine? Heroine?). Turns out there was a ship that sunk in the 1940's carrying drugs that are now worth millions. So the bad guys try to get them to get it for them. Since they're in Bermuda, there's no useful law, so they can't appeal there. They find a loca More...

I definitely enjoyed the plot of this novel and got through it very quickly. I got the overwhelming impression, as I read, that it would make a much better film (for me) than it did a book, but this was mostly because it was filled with action, the writing was very "visual", and the plot more event-driven than character-driven. I did find the many references to boating and diving a bit uncomfortable because I didn't understand much of it, but it was still a good read.

Sometimes books were hard to come by in Kenya, I would exchange with other volunteers when possible, but there were times that I was forced to read whatever was on hand. This was one of those times. I don't remember if it was any good,

Not too bad as a book on tape. For reasons not readily apparent to me, I thought it was going to be about a giant squid. It was not. Probably a better movie than book (although I haven't seen the movie, I'm assuming there is one).

Talk about a sophomore slump. This is the book Peter wrote after Jaws. To put it mildly if this had been his first book we would have never heard of this author. Story is dumb and the characters are annoying. And I spent the first 2/3rds of the book waiting for a monster. There is no monster

I enjoyed the book overall and would have rated it higher if not for the ending. The ending wasn't terrible, it was abrupt and left a lot of questions in my mind.

Not quite as riveting as Jaws, but still fun. Read in high school. This was when I first noticed that movies don't stick with the books.

Much more interesting than the boring movie made from it, but still no Jaws. A solid effort worth a read, but not near as powerful.

I actually liked this one a bit more than Jaws. Enjoyed the plot and the characters very much. Excellent summer read.

It was OK. No Jaws, of course. Plot seemed a little helter-skelter in places.

This book was very much like Jaws in a way. Not too much talk about sharks in this book, but very suspenseful.

A couple on their honeymoon go diving for buried treasure, but instead they find a mysterious glass container (ampule) that contains morphine. After the word gets out that the couple found a ampule a very powerful man threatens them into getting the lot of whats buried so he can make thousands of dollars by selling the drugs.

This book started out better than Jaws over the first 150 pages or so. Decent development of a plot and characters. Basically, honeymooners are in Bermuda for a dive vacation and discover sunken jewels and drugs and then encounter the local underworld. My reaction from reading Jaws and The Deep is that they both ended poorly/abruptly. More creative thought regarding story closure would have made these more enjoyable.

This was different from other Benchley books I’ve read. If you don’t recognize the name, this is the guy who wrote Jaws. His other books that I’ve read have all involved some sort of creature. The only evil creature in this book is man. Not a bad read — nice and quick. My only complaint is that I liked the main character better before any of his background was explained. Really, the guy was kind of a jerk.

"The Deep" ... wasn't very. But it was an engaging action yarn from the author of "Jaws." This time, the story revolves around treasure diving. It's a tale of drugs and violence, with some sex thrown in for good measure. A guilty pleasure, to be sure, but Benchley's descriptions of Bermuda seemed awfully inviting as I read this over the course of several chilly MN nights.

I love what I've read all three Benchleys. Robert is so funny that I read his cynical views of New York society as a teen in rural Wisconsin, and Nathaniel creates towns full of quirky characters... but I doubt I'll ever read Jaws.

What 12-year-old boy wouldn't love a book with so much sex and drugs? I'm not 12 anymore and I kind of wonder if there was really that much sex in this book.

They made a decent movie out of this one. I enjoyed it. Another of his that is not about sharks or beasts of the sea, other than humans that is.
