Overall Rating: A++
Synopsis: A psychological/supernatural thriller created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student, Light Yagami, who discovers the notebook of a shinigami that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name while picturing his or her face. Light's goal is to create and lead a world cleansed of evil using the book, but where is the line between an honorable goal, and mass murder?
The note book has a series of instructions written by the shinigami, Ryuk, who owned the book, and holding the book allows Light to see Ryuk. After confirming that the book works, Light begins a killing spree, wiping out all of the major criminals whose identities are televised. Soon, this attracts the attention of the International Police Organization, and a mysterious detective known only as "L".
Through a stunt that kills a man sentenced to death in prison, L learns that "Kira" (the name the public gives to the mysterious killer of criminals), is located in Japan. L then quickly begins working to determine who Kira is. Light realizes that he must kill L, and it's a race to determine who will survive. ...more

I was kinda hoping I would only get a few books into this series and get bored...as I do with pretty much all series books, since most sequels are totally worthless compared to the originals in my mind. This volume was AMAZING. L starts to really shine in this volume and Ryuk's character gets fleshed out in such a subtle way (wait can he even get "fleshed out" since he's a death demon?) So smart, so surprisingly funny at points, and with such an ending! My jaw was on the floor for like...more

(Really in English; just couldn't find the English edition.) OK, the story just keeps getting better. Kira is twisted brilliant; the dizzying level of logic & philosophy used by the main characters is stunning; and the curves that Ohba has set up by the end of Vol. 3 make me feel like going out & buying the remainder of the series, so as to keep the momentum going.

This volume picks up where the previous one left off, with Light under scrutiny. I actually found it to be a lot more predictable plot-wise than the previous volumes, which was a bit disappointing. Still, it's a great story with interesting characters!

Once again, I was impressed with the series (so far). Captivating characters, a completely unpredictable plot, and a great story overall. I am not going to review any more more of the books, because there are twelve, unless it deserves attention.

Best book in the series so far. I couldn't put it down once I started it. The plot got extremely suspenseful, and went in a direction I didn't expect. I even got scared/nervous reading it. Can't wait to read the next one.

This series gets better and better -- when it started I couldn't imagine how the writers could drag the premise out over so many volumes, but the twists keep coming as L and Light toy with each other.

Great art; I love how everything is drawn. And the storyline actually makes you think, which is always a plu in my book.

L's posture and freaky eyes are creeping me out as much as his prehensile toes.
