I felt the irresistible urge to sneak this read in. I'm read it out of the Lover Beware collection. Nice start to the Drake sisters' series. I enjoyed the interaction between Sarah and Damon. Their coming together was fated, and not just by a prophecy. They seem to meet each other's needs. Confesso que quando soube que a editora Saída de Emergência ia apostar nesta autora, não senti muita curiosidade em ler as suas obras. Contudo, tendo recebido o primeiro livro da série das irmãs Drake em oferta, decidi que valia a pena conhecê-las. Olhando para o tamanho do livro, achar-se-ia que podia ser uma pequena introdução e não um primeiro livro, aquele que marca o início de uma série. Mas, contrariamente às minhas crenças, este é realmente o primeiro livro da série, embora este pareça mais um conto do que uma história desenvolvida.
A verdade é inegável para mim. Se não tivesse recebido este livro, dificilmente alguma vez o compraria e nunca conheceria esta série, a não ser que no futuro, a comprasse em inglês. Assim sendo, foi com alguma indiferença que comecei esta leitura.

Como podem calcular, o livro serve realmente de introdução à série. É a história das irmã das mais velha das sete irmãs Drake. Sarah tem alguns poderes de premonição e apaixona-se por Damon Wilder, que não só é um cliente, como também é o homem com quem ela está destinada a ficar.
A favor do livro, tenho a dizer que a autora conseguiu fazer com que eu me interessasse nestas sete irmãs e nas suas capacidades e poderes misteriosos. É uma escrita bastante simples, que se segue com muita facilidade e que mantém o leitor interessado nos acontecimentos que estão para vir.

Por outro lado, a história tornou-se algo confusa para mim, alguns acontecimentos aparecem do nada no enredo e o leitor perde o fio condutor da história. Isto é algo que talvez possa não ser culpa da autora. Pode ao invés ser problema de tradução.
Fiquei com pena que a história fosse tão breve e lamento também que não tenha existido a oportunidade de explorar mais estes personagens, porque estranhamente, no breve período que Damon e Sarah me acompanharam, senti carinho por eles. E tenho pena que a história deles não tenha merecido mais atenção e dedicação.

No entanto, creio que o que a autora quis fazer com este pequeno livro foi chamar à atenção dos leitores para a série e deixar espaço para os leitores ficarem curiosos e ansiosos para lerem mais. Eu sei que fiquei curiosa. E mais: fiquei com imensa vontade de ler mais sobre as irmãs Drake. E vou fazê-lo, num futuro próximo. (less)

This story features Sarah, the oldest sister.

The setting is a charming little town called Sea Haven, in Northern California. Given that I live in California, I can easily imagine a rocky, steep shoreline, salty sea spray, winding roads, white-washed clapboard homes, etc. The Drake House is on the cliff and includes a self-locking magical gate and a widow's walk.

Sarah, a security expert and a witch, has a huge heart and a nicely padded body -- no glamour girl here! Hoorah for a normal womanly shape !! Damon, the neighbor, is a weary wreck with a broken hip, in his early 40's. He is a lonely scientist looking for a place to escape from his tormented past.

Damon instantly is attracted to Sarah and the feeling is reciprocated, also instantly. No tension there, but sweet.

It starts sweetly, like this: "Sarah is coming! Sarah is coming home!" sings the wind, echoed by the townspeople with gladness. Damon hears it, and is instantly filled with some strange eager anticipation. So he goes to her house, just cuz he is so drawn to meet this mysterious Sarah. Flowers bloom out of season, grass greens, house gleams, all because Sarah is finally home. Very...well....sweet.

But evil lurks in the heart of man (3 men, actually). There is murder and mayhem, but it's not scary. No true tension or suspense, even during the dangerous scenes, when kidnappers and killers are on the prowl. I felt a little tense, seeing the black shroud of Death hovering around Damon, but...I knew he wouldn't die, bc this is a romance novel. And even if he did die, he would be okay, cuz Sarah is a super magical creature, and she loves him so. I think it must be really hard to create suspense in a romance novel, and especially when the good guys are blessed with superpowers galore.

I liked Sarah's real love for the townspeople, and vice versa. It was, um, sweet. Truly.

So all in all, this was, at heart, a sweet and tender love story, murder notwithstanding.

Adding a little tart, I enjoyed the hostility between Hannah and Jonas. Of course, they come together in book 5, Safe Harbor.

Advance notice, especially for sensitive readers: This Drake Sisters series gets progressively darker. Book 1, Magic in the Wind, is mostly sweet and light, as mentioned above. Book 2 is a little darker, a nice balance. Book 5 is rather dark, with one of the sisters getting stabbed multiple times (but I liked it). Book 7 is apparently FAR too dark and psychologically intense, according to reviews (repeated rape, torture). I stopped after book 6 -- not as dark as book 5 IMO, with a perfectly lovely Russian agent. Several of the books in this series feature villains engaged in sex trafficking, abuse of children, adolescents, and women. Feehan apparently is trying to make a case against it. Not sure this is the venue.

Magic in the Wind is the novella that sets up the Drake Sisters series, which means it has a hell of a lot to do in just over 100 pages. The series tells the tale of seven sisters who have magical abilities and who’s romantic fate is tied to a prophecy so the likelihood that the beginning story would feel like on big info dump was fairly high.

2.5 stars. Very likable characters, rather poor execution. The story felt rushed and shallow, not properly developed, only touched upon. The author failed to create a real sense of danger, a real connection between Damon and Sarah. It felt as if we were only told that those two were destined to be soul mates, it wasn't really shown or felt. And even the characters' background was rather scrappy. These lovable characters deserved a longer, more in-depth story.

I listened to the audio version of this and wasn't aware it was a novella until I read other's goodreads reviews. That said I was pleased because I usually dislike novellas. They usually don't develop the characters or story line thoroughly. Perhaps the audio version helped. This is the perfect example of a good material gone to waste because the author can't bring justice to it. *sigh* I should have prepared myself to be disappointed.

The first few chapters of MItW started off well enough, the author captured the coastal town atmosphere perfectly, however, after that it got a little, okay at times a lot, cheesy and eye-roll-inducing. Romances don't have to be that sticky-sweet. What was different and interesting is that the narration was mainly told through the male lead instead of the female; there's not too much of that in romances. The only downfall to the story being told this way was Damon waxing poetic about Sarah the Mysterious, Sarah the Magical, Sarah the Magnificent, Sarah, She Who Walks on Water - seriously, what a Mary-Sue. I'm surprised people didn't address her as Saint Sarah. Everyone in town follows her "advice" (basically she tells them what to do in a roundabout way and they listen), seeks her out to magically fix all their problems, act like she's a goddess, combined, this all made it ten times worse. They just follow her like brainless zombies and never get upset at her poking her nose in their business (not that they all don't do the same in everybody else's). Even though all of that was nauseating, she wasn't the worst Mary-Sue I've run across (Why o' why are there so many of them? Is there a writer's manual on how to write a paragon so that everything they touch, everywhere they go, everyone they meet, they're held up as a supreme being? I wish I was perfect too. :P) and she had magic, so that makes it all the more unfair. Although, who is Sarah besides the saint of this small coastal town? I have no clue, she was never made real, I actually envisioned a golden aura around her like she's some sort of angelic being or something, which is at total odds with her tough defender super hero side. Some girls have all the luck. She has magic, she's as kind as can be, she's perfect in every way (except she's not conventionally beautiful or something, the description was kind of unclear), so of course everyone loves her, she's peaceful and she gets to kick a** like she's Buffy? No freaking way. Where can I sign up?

Another annoyance was "painfully shy" Hannah, one of Sarah's six sisters. Hannah is apparently a model who travels the world, is on magazines, goes on talk shows, etc., even though she is painfully shy. Hey, I can believe someone famous has trouble like that, my problem comes from her "condition" being described as "painfully shy" all the time. It is mentioned in that exact same way, it's never really shy, very shy, extremely shy, or even just plain old shy, no it has to be "painfully shy." In truth, it was only said three times (that I noticed), but in a story that is only around ninety pages, it really sticks out, especially since it was awkwardly brought into the plot. I have a hard time believing this is only shyness, try social phobia or at the very least, some anxiety disorder. Why hasn't she had psychological care? The only remedies mentioned are magical spells and whatnot. While I'm on the subject of Hannah, of whom I know more about personality-wise than Sarah, I might as well mention the jeering and taunting between Jona, the town sheriff, and herself. These interactions are so over-the-top and obvious; we all know where this is going to lead in a future book. And not one of the sisters or Damon notices what is right in front of them. How can they be so imperceptive? What are they, seven? Although I have to admit I'd hate to be called "Baby" or "Barbie" doll too, but then again, I don't look like a Victoria's Secret model, Hannah does.

As for the plot, it was barely there, more time was spent on introducing the sisters, their legacy, characters that went nowhere, and having Sarah sit on a pedestal. Damon would have been more interesting if this had been made into a full-length book - I like the idea of a scientist being confronted with magic - but there just wasn't enough there for a cohesive story. I usually don't write much about short stories but had a lot to say about this one. Obviously. I'm interested in the sisters' stories, I try not to judge authors solely based on a short story, so I will check them out, especially Hannah's. As someone who's been "painfully shy" (couldn't resist) her whole life, my interest has been piqued to see how the author develops Hannah and her shyness in that installment of the series.

I was thinking of giving this an average rating but after writing my review and thinking back on the story, it's just not that good.

Considering how tiny this book was I surprisingly enjoyed it.

I own the whole Drake Sister series but I've only read them once through and never back to back and so I decided that perhaps it was time to read them again one after the other to see how well the series comes together.

Ultimately, I feel like this was a rough draft of a book that should have been fleshed out more before being published. The story is OK, really it's easy to tell that the book is just setting up a series and getting you into the small town and an introduction to the Drake sisters. Strangely, this was the last book in the series I read, even though it's the first one. Booksamillion didn't even have it, and when my library finally got it it was paired up with Oceans of Fire. When I read it I realized why; if the book stood alone it would be the size of a pamphlet.

I didn't even have time to connect with the characters or get into the plot (what little plot there was) before it was over. I couldn't believe the length of this book and how much didn't happen. I expected so much more out of this when I read the other books and found out about Sarah and Damon and the threat that came into the house because of people that were after him.

I liked the building up of Sarah’s mystique, with her name being heard on the wind, and all of the legends surrounding her. The conversation between Sarah and her sisters about her protecting Damon was funny. They were picking on her about watching him and all that and it was enjoyable to read.

Sadly, those were pretty much the only enjoyable things in the book. The rest of the story we had the absolute bare minimum of everything—plot, love, characters—everything. Nothing played out the way I hoped it would. Their love was immediate and I felt that they didn’t even have time to get to know each other before they were sleeping together, and the romantic scenes were very low key and without much description and detail compared to her other works. Very disappointing in a romance book.

Sarah’s job was to protect Damon and I actually didn’t know she was assigned to protect him until after Damon got mad and she admitted that was what she was doing (due to lack of info. from author) and I didn’t like the fact that she was protecting him. She came off as a little manly at that part, and I didn’t like that.

I was like this was the beginning of the great Drake Sisters series? I don’t know what Feehan was thinking when she got this published. It’s like she just had the beginnings of an idea in her head and instead of waiting for it to fully develop she just rushed this to the finish line to hurry up and get it out there. So disappointing, and this isn’t the magical introduction to the Drake sisters world of supernatural abilities I was expecting.

i read this book and i couldnt help but wonder-WHERE WAS THE STORY?! was it just me or were we missing a whole story. it's like she started writing, got tired of it and wanted to finish it, and then just rushed through it, completely leaving out stuff.love came out of nowhere. one minute they're just talking and the next they're in love! i was like wth? i like love to slowly develop, so that we actually believe it in a story.not the kind that comes out of nowhere like a smack in the face.

This was...well, I'm not sure what this was. I didn't dislike this book. Actually, I liked it. I just have no idea why I liked it.

The characters were very well drawn. The heroine, Sarah, wasn't annoying. She was a strong woman without being overbearing or snarky. The hero, Damon, was a little snarky and a lot wounded. Oh good grief. I should have known better really.

I read Dark Prince recently, and was unimpressed with it. However, at the same time as I bought Dark Prince, I'd picked up a copy of one of the Drake Sister books, little realising it was not book one. I am completely anal when it comes to reading series in order - I will spontaneously combust if I read book #3 before book #1! Don't you try and tell me otherwise!

She believes that Damon moving to her hometown and buying the house next door, is a sign that she is meant to protect this man.

The book starts with Damon overhearing the towns people discussing the return of their beloved hometown girl, Sarah Drake. Damon begins hearing her name in the wind and is drawn to her and her home, without even meeting the woman. The Drake Family is magical, possessing great gifts. In each generation, the young daughter bares seven daughters of her own. Their family holds many more mysteries, including the prophecy that the girls will marry their true love in order form eldest to youngest. The gates of the Drake home will only open to their true love. Sarah is the eldest daughter and wasn’t interested in marrying until the house gate opened to Damon Wilder. Her two dogs greeted Damon as an old friend, returning home. It was love at first sight. Sarah recognized that Damon was in physical pain from the injury to his hip and leg and emotional pain from the loss of his assistant and the torture he endured at the hands of his captors. That evening, Sarah’s sister Hannah arrived at the Drake Family Home, followed by Kate and Abbey. Sarah’s instincts called her to Damon, to protect him. On her way over, she spotted a man with a tranquilizer rifle and a man at Damon’s window. She fought with the gunned man, while Damon fought the man at the window. Sarah managed to get the gun, but both men escaped when a third gunman appeared on scene. Damon realized that Sarah was hired to protect him and the two began talking, which lead to kissing and a little spying by her sisters. Sarah and Damon spent the night together talking about themselves, their past, the families, everything. Sarah introduces Damon to three of her sisters and the Sheriff. The Sheriff and Hannah have bad history and Hannah finds it difficult to control herself when the Sheriff teases her. Hannah is extremely shy, but doesn’t let her fear of crowds or speaking to others stop her from leading her life. She does struggle with this and even more so in school. Hannah was also stunning in school and the Sheriff was a popular jock. The thought Hannah was conceded because she wouldn’t talk to him at school. Misinterpreting the situation, he chose to tease her at every chance which made it more difficult for Hannah to overcome her fears. The Sheriff does love the Drake Sisters and makes them promise to call him if they suspect the gunmen have returned. Sarah and Damon spend all of their time together and have fallen in love. Damon can’t get over how quickly his life has changed for the better. Damon and Sarah visit the locals and he realizes that looking at the world through her eyes has opened his heart. When they visit the gift shop, they find a local being held by one of the gunmen. Sarah uses her power to hold the gunman while Damon contacts the police and watches her back. The Sheriff arrives and arrests the gunman. Damon takes Sarah to his home to rest after using so much of her power. When Sarah regains her energy, they discuss their love for one another and make love. They spend the rest of the afternoon and night in bed together, happy and in love. The next day, Damon, Sarah, Hannah, Alley, and Kate visit with a sick child in hopes of easing his pain or prolonging life. After talking to the boy, the sisters decide to use their magic to prolong the boys health in hopes that their sister Libby can come home to heal him. After using their magic, the sisters were exhausted. When they arrived at the Drake house, the sisters rested while Damon answered the phone. The youngest sister, Elle felt the drain of power and told Damon to make the sisters a sweet magical tea to regain their strength. While on the phone, Elle and Damon felt an earth moving force. Damon phoned the police and walked in on the gunman with the sisters. They drank their tea while Damon stalled the gunmen. The sisters used their powers of wind and ocean to break open the doors and knock over the gunmen. Damon gave Sarah the gun and she took out one gunman while knocking the other down. The police arrived and after interrogating the sisters and Damon, the rested. With the danger over, Damon and Sarah can get married and live happily ever after.

I enjoyed this story and am intrigued to find out more about the Drake Family. There was a lot of family history not explained and I felt like I needed to know more about the Damon and Sarah.

Claro que isto se deve à magnífica capacidade que Christine Feehan tem para se expressar de forma directa e concisa. É certo que o desenvolvimento do romance e das personagens sofre ligeiramente com o tamanho do livro e arrisco afirmar convictamente que, como livro isolado, Magia ao Vento seria um absoluto fiasco mas como introdução à série acabou por me parecer bastante bom e extremamente aliciante. Não tive qualquer problema com a leveza da narrativa, pelo contrário - as possibilidades para os próximos livros entusiasmam-me imenso. Penso que este livro pode ser rotulado como um óptimo aperitivo!

Toda a trama inicial se encontra envolta num mistério crepitante: Sarah. A forma intrigante como Feehan inicia a sua narrativa instiga-nos a prosseguir na leitura para descobrir quem é esta tal de Sarah e tentar desvendar o tenebroso passado de Damon - um homem à beira da loucura, cujo acto de se mudar para esta pequena cidade costeira foi o último esforço para se agarrar à vida.

Os episódios descritos estão completamente preenchidos por magia e misticismo…certamente que algumas partes se traduzem como velhos clichés já desgastados e alguns dos momentos paranormais foram inclusivamente demasiado fantasiosos para mim, mas a autora consegue dar-nos a volta criando em simultâneo um ambiente cómico veiculado tanto a esta pequena localidade que torna a leitura ainda mais acolhedora e interessante, tanto à interação entre as irmãs Drake e a picardia constante entre elas.

Agradou-me imenso que a autora não se focasse completamente em Sarah e Drake, já que nenhum dos dois me despertou especial interesse. Fiquei cativada, isso sim, pelas sete irmãs como unidade coesa e fiquei também bastante curiosa para conhecer as restantes irmãs. O facto de Drake, um homem lógico que aposta sempre nas bases científicas, aceitar Sarah, as suas irmãs e a magia que as rodeia sem quaisquer reservas empurra a história para a frente e não nos aborrece com impasses…claro que isto dificilmente será realista, mas poupa-nos a dilemas existenciais.

This was a difficult book for me to rate. I really disliked the whole love story. I'm sorry but the first few lines were "the wind whispered her name, Sarah is back". Sei que o Damon ronda os 40 anos porque é dito na história, mas não faço a mínima ideia de quantos terá Sarah. Tenho ideia que ela é loira mas não tenho bem a certeza. E isto é tudo o que posso dizer no aspecto físico. Ah e tal ele é muito inteligente e ela é muito bondosa, mas não sei mais nada. Para além desta falha, durante toda a história não consegui sentir nenhuma ligação com as personagens. As coisas passam-se mas eu "vejo-as" à distância. Não se estabelece nenhuma ligação entre o leitor e a história. Toda a história é vista muito superficialmente, não perdia nada (aliás até ganhava) pela caracterização das personagens, do ambiente, até um melhor desenvolvimento do romance entre os protagonistas, que achei muito fraco. Eles mal se vêem ficam logo apaixonados e mais nada. Nem direito a uma discussão temos... Eles concordam em tudo, é um romance de fadas... E o que mais me irritou ao principio é que quando se conheceram vezes sem conta Damon faz ou diz certas coisas contra vontade, sem o tencionar. Uma, duas vezes, até se tolera. Agora um outra e mais outra vez, torna-se muito esquisito.
Enfim, é um livro que promete mas que não cumpre... achei-o pouco desenvolvido. É um livro pequeno precisamente porque precisa de um maior desenvolvimento. Este deveria ter sido o rascunho e a escritora deveria ter pegado nele e continuado, feito mais, criado uma ligação maior com a história.
Bem, quando puder irei pegar no próximo (mal não faz) ver se melhora em relação a este. Se tal não se cumprir, duvido que volte a pegar na série.(less)

It's been many years since I re-read this novella. I remember liking it, but not really loving it, the first time around. I have to say that's still the way I feel. Though I enjoyed quite a bit of it, I didn't absolutely adore it.

One of my biggest problems was the inconsistent way Sarah acted. she was supposedly a bodyguard, one of the best in security, but she often deferred to Damon, the man she was supposed to be protecting. Similarly, Damon knew he needed protection but refused to accept it...more

I loved this! I'm so glad that one of my Goodreads friends prompted me to read it because I really enjoyed it. I love the relationship between the sisters, they had me laughing out loud A LOT!

A great start to the series. I really thought that I would be put off by the magical element to this book, but actually it didn't deter me at all. I was really intrigued by the Sisters and there is a great supporting cast of quirky characters.

Magic in the Wind is a light, both in tone and word-count, romance that begins the Drake Sisters series. Originally a short story, Magic in the Wind has been expanded into a novella slightly over one hundred pages.

As the first story in the Drake Sisters series, Magic in the Wind follows oldest sister Sarah's love story. This romance isn't perfect and probably needed more build up than the book allows. Magic is used to explain away the missing and much needed tension between Sarah and Damon.
