I give this book three out of five stars, but in a split manner. If I were to rate the book solely upon my enjoyment and escape into it's historical aspects, it would be two stars; yet if I were to rate this book on the detail and descriptions of this historical journey at hand it would four stars. Thus, I settle at three. Starting out reading this book, I was quite distraught and not at all drawn in. The cover is gorgeous and the summary sounds interesting, but in the reading I was just not the...more

I think this is supposed to be a Christian historical fiction with a strong romance theme, but all it really shines at is giving a comprehensive historical look at court life under Queen Elizabeth I.

The main characters occasionally make a vague reference to God, but that's about it. God certainly doesn't impact their lives at all.

As for the romance, the 'hero' is self-centered, childish, ambitious, cruel, emotionally abusive of his wife, and a few other unflattering things. I was rooting for him...more

I almost think one needs a constant heart to finish "A Constant Heart" - not because it's poorly written but because it's so well written and there is so much angst that it was hard for me to read it straight through. The characters were so believable that you could feel their pain, their struggle, their demise, there frustrations... I wish the end had been extended a bit so we could see a bit more happiness without the constant struggles of the court they escaped. Just one more short little cha...more

Started out strong, but then sputtered out. There was not much of a plot or character arc. I didn't see much reason why the characters fell in love. It's very meh all around. Only read this if you are a freak for Elizabethan court historical fiction.

Read Kissing Adrien instead. It's by the same author but you would never guess it. It's not historical fiction but it's a much better romance and a much better read in general.

Marget has trained to be a countess for twelve years, and her chance has come to put into practice all she has learned. She is to be married to the Earl of Lytham, who is a courtier to Queen Elizabeth. Marget saves her best friend, Joan, from an unwanted marriage and brings her to be a maid.
Lytham’s first marriage was annulled due to infidelity, so he automatically distrusts Marget, and acts as if he hates her. When Lytham brings her to meet the Queen, she is so jealous of her beauty that she ca...more

There is no doubt that this book is well-written. In fact, both of the novels I've read by Siri Mitchell are filled with historical details that are fascinating and really made me feel like I was stepping into history. The thing I didn't enjoy about it was a personal preference...the story was just down right depressing! I was hoping for a strong love story, but there was just a little bit of that...the focus was of the way a person's life can be ruined by trying to please an earthly queen as op...more

I love a pure and endearing love story. And call me strange, but I love a love story where two people are thrust into a marriage they don’t want and falling in love despite that fact.
I was skeptical about A Constant Heart when I started it. I wasn’t sure if the premise could hold up a 380 page book. Love and beauty being a curse? Would it drag? I am so thrilled to say, I was blown away! This novel evoked so many different emotions in me. Fear, love, anger, sympathy. I learned so much about 16th...more

Elizabethan England is a marvelous place to set a story! This one paints quite a different view of Elizabeth than the " Good Queen Bess" we always hear about. My favorite part of the story was that it showed readers that the world system was and has always been corrupt and unrighteousness, lest we, in looking at the past and history through the rose-colored glasses of one who never lived it, think that somehow there was ever a time when the evils of the world system (Babylon) were not seeking th...more

This is my second book by Siri Mitchell. I am surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The main reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the way the point of view changes from Marget to Lytham was confusing at times. Usually authors start a new chapter with a new person's perspective and include the name at the beginning of the chapter. Sometimes I had to read a few sentences before I knew who's perspective I was reading.I enjoyed that it wasn't predictable and it wasn't like a typical love story. The...more

The earl of Lytham wants nothing more than to please the Queen and earn a good place in her court. But in 1590, Queen Elizabeth is not a woman whose favor is easily granted. Deciding to marry in order to use the dowry for improvements on his property, Lytham hopes for nothing more than that his new wife is homely and will not divide his attention away from the queen. On his wedding day he meets his bride and is beyond dismayed that she is a beautiful young thing, too much like his treacherous fi...more

Trapped...that's how I felt the whole time I was reading this book. I didn't like the place this book took me: Queen Elizabeth's time and her court where it was all about lying, trickery, appearances, being obsessed with pleasing the queen, etc. I also didn't have any patience for the continual "he loves me, he loves me not, is she cheating on me, is she faithful" drama. When I finally resurfaced after reading it, I looked around me at my life and uttered a sigh of relief. The only part that I r...more

I picked up A Constant Heart because I loved Siri Mitchell's more recent novel, Love's Pursuit, so much. However, I can not recommend this book. I can't really judge the book 100% because I didn't finish it--but I gave it a good, sporting chance and read to about page 220. With 150 pages left to go, I felt like reading the rest would be a painful waste of time.

Where Love's Pursuit, which took place in a Puritan community in 17th century Massachusetts, was a very moving story of love and faith,...more

Well, I am definitely interested in the historical aspect of this book. I have never heard of the "court" under Queen Elizabeth the 1st. I was surprised by the lengths people would go for her and the lies and betrayals. I struggles sometimes with Lord Lytham. he wasn't very endearing. I understand his trust issues made it hard for him to love with wife immediately, but he was rude and insensitive. He didn't seem to care anything for her until she completely changed her look? Not a great love sto...more

In the Provo City Library, Constant Heart is found under the Romance section of the library. It's a forbidden area of the library, at least...it's supposed to be, and yet I've probably checked more books out from that section than anywhere else. Mostly because Provo's library doesn't require much to be considered a romance. I would have never put Constant Heart in the romance section... It is more general, historical fiction.

My main problem with the book isn't really fair. I wanted Marget to be...more

I'm not exactly sure where A Constant Heart fits into the book spectrum. It seemed to be as much about the fear-hate to love-love relationship Marget has with Lytham as it was about the historical events of Queen Elizabeth's court. It was extremely factual, which I liked, and it included everyone against their love, which I didn't like. It was so hard to like Marget when here entire relationship with Lytham seemed to be in the hands of Lady de Winter. I couldn't stand it how Marget didn't seem t...more

At first it was difficult to discern which narrator I was reading as I am used to the breaks in text being time passed instead of a switch in narration. But, once I got used to the switch, I kind of looked forward to it.

Overall, the story was quite intriguing, and I have to say that for a modern book, this one was rather clean - it didn't have foul language and it didn't have raunchy scenes that I had to skim over.

It felt real and I appreciated the switches in narration for perspective's sake....more

Mitchell's book was a different sort of read for me. I like historical fiction, but usually they have more of a romantic theme in them. Mitchell's book to me was just historical fiction with a bit of romance.

A Constant Heart was about the courtier's during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Marget is a beautiful woman in a world where beauty is not allowed. She marries a courtier, Lytham, who thinks that beauty is a curse not a blessing and despises his wife for her looks. Marget encouraged by her...more

About the book:

Born with the face of an angel, Marget Barnardsen is blessed. Her father is a knight and now she is to be married to the Earl of Lytham. Her destiny is guaranteed...at least, it would seem so. But when her introduction to court goes awry and Queen Elizabeth despises her, Marget fears she's lost her husband forever. Desperate to win him back, she'll do whatever it takes to discover how she failed and capture the love of a man bound to the queen.

My review:

This was a very detailed story of Elizabethan England. The historical part was wonderful. I love that at the end of Siri Mitchell's books she includes information about what is actually true. I like her characters, her love stories, and the cleanliness of her books. I've read some of her other books, but I didn't enjoy this one as much. It was interesting but I found myself skipping a lot of the in between stuff because it was so detailed and there was SO much of it.

A Constant Heart was a book that took a while to get into. I'm only a teenager, so it took me some time to really get the hang of the dialogue used by the characters. I love hearing about kings and queens and the English court so it was nice to hear a fictional side of the courtiers life and yet it seemed so true. I recommend this if you like just a tad bit of history but you enjoy more of a love story that forms slowly. I really enjoyed the book.

this book was a total dissapointment. The characters were weak, 2-dimensional, and it was painful to read about them. I kept trying to finish this book, telling myself that it would get better, but it got to the point where their lives were so miserable i could't finish the book and so i skipped about 75 pages to the end. big surprise, it got a little bit better but their lives still sucked. I regret the time i wasted reading this book.

I desperately wanted to read this book. I love the setting (Elizabethan England) and what I read, it was described very well.

However, I couldn't connect with the characters. It's done from two POVs but each POV is done in first person, and it often got confusing who was talking. I thought after each chapter or chapter break it would be the next person talking, and would often assume such...and then I'd get a paragraph in and find out it was the other. I didn't think that the characters were fles...more

Siri Mitchell is one of those spectacular authors with well-written, well-researched stories. For the historical information, I love her books... She captures what it was like to live in whatever period of time she is writing about. As in A Constant Heart, I learned what it was like in Queen Elizabeth's court... and was completely appalled. I can't believe women would paint their faces white and friz their hair (in other words, destroy their beauty) to fit in with the court!
This story was very...more

This was the first book I read by Siri Mitchell. Although this story is (SPOILER) a sad one, it was a very interesting read. Set during Queen Elizabeth I reign, it shed light on true historical factors that affected women during that time. I typically love the happy endings, and this sorta has one, but I really enjoyed reading it.

I really enjoyed this book. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is sometimes a bit difficult to read. Taking place in the sixteenth century, there are several words that I really didn't know what they were. I don't like having to have a dictionary nearby in order to read a novel. Otherwise the story was great.

I enjoyed A Constant Heart because it wasn't a fall in love, happy ever after book. This is the story of two people, during the time of the Tudor Court, marrying without ever meeting, changing to become the person the other wants, only to come to love who they really are.

Well written, historical, and well worth reading.

This book had good qualities definetly a historical fiction on make-up, it just seemed slow. went on and on about the bad side of bing in court with the queen, but not in a light way. The point of the book seemed to be how all the women wore make up that was killing them and their unborn children. I thought it was depressing!
