Everyone has a secret they don’t dare tell anyone.
He’ll kill you for yours.

Cody McFadyen has shocked even the most jaded suspense fans with Shadow Man and The Face of Death. Now comes a thriller that outdoes them all, featuring a psychopath on a perverse crusade of murder. And the one woman who can stop him has a secret that will change her from the hunter to the hunted.…

Awesome book in this fantastic series. I just can't get enough. McFadyen knows his stuff. Looking forward to reading more of his in this new year.
Whewww!!! What a ride this was. I know when Smokey Barrett climbs on the Dark Train that we are always in for a heck of a ride. Smokey is the head of an elite unit of the LA FBI that hunt nothing but serial killers. Luckily her and her group are very good at what they do. Smokey's team gets a call from the head of the FBI about a Texas Senator's daughter that was found dead on a plane. The only problem is, she is really a he. Smokey is confused at first as to why her team is brought in, but when ...more
Meine Meinung:
Also, bitte ein neuer Versuch Cody...

I was thoroughly disappointed in this third in the series. McFadyen is a superb writer as revealed in the firzt two books in this series. He writes about the true evil inherent in serial killers with a genuine ability to be unrelenting in revealing pathological evil. However this book lacked everything which made the first two books exceptional. I don't know what happened with the Darker Side. I know that the author went through a divorce and maybe this was written during that trying time... the ...more

Are you a fan of Serial Killer novels ? Love and Read Cody McFayden's other books ? When I saw this book come through, I wasn't sure if I had read it but when I started bits and pieces started to gel and seem familiar but it was prior to the joining the ranks of Book Bloggers United and our fabulous community of sharing books, and since I am such a huge fan of Cody's books , I figured why not just read it again and I'm glad I did as of course surprise, surprise I enjoyed it.

In many ways, this series (for me) fills the gap left behind by Harlen Coben's move toward stand alones and away from his regular outings with Myron Bolitar. Though there is very little in common between Smokey Barrett, an FBI agent who heads an elite unit devoted to tracking down serial killers, and Myron, sports agent and reluctant detective, the two series have a similar feel--a strong first person narrative voice, an interesting cast of secondary characters, and a world this is both brutal a ...more

This book isn't exactly new, it was published May last year, but I just got my hands on it last week. So, this book is called 'The Darker Side' by Cofy McFadyen.

The protagonist of this story is Smoky Barret, a FBI Special Agent with a tragic past. Two years ago her husband and daughter were murdered by a serial-killer with a personal grudge. He raped her and cut up her face. Smoky however survived and is once again one of the best Special Agents the FBI has.
That is exactly why she's chosen to in

“Dreams evolve, not always for the better.”
Found an awesome series to read through. I loved this book. Maybe it’s because I very much admire the character of the protagonist, Agent Smoky Barret (what a name, ha?) who has a terribly long scar that meanders through her face (courtesy of an earlier villain), that would make the Joker’s, look like a joke. She is the leader of a team of agents who are vibrant characters themselves, and together, somehow, despite their differences, the four of them ma
In "The Darker Side," the third novel featuring FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett, Barrett and her team are called to Washington, DC to deal with a homicide that could be potentially explosive for one of the country's rising political stars. What they find, however, makes it nearly impossible to keep the lid on; the victim, the transsexual child of a leading candidate for higher office, appears to be the latest in a very, very long string of murders linked together by the killer's calling card. Oh well. I am a bit indecisive here because it's not like the book was that bad at all but I just read better ones. Even the two earlier Smoky ones were more exciting than this one even though it took McFadyen way too long to develop a certain excitement point or whatever.

But here? It felt like McFadyen only wrote this book in some kind of routine. Very obvious, very straight. No excitement. No real awesome plot. No nothing. The thing is normaly a person like Smoky would be "done" - the
This is #3 in the Smoky Barret FBI series and this book finds the team caught up in a serial killers ongoing quest for "the truth". Somehow the killer nicknamed The Preacher captures/tortures and kills women after he films them admitting their deepest darkest sinful secrets.

This book was intense as this entire series. I wish Cody McFadyen would write some more books.
This book really pushed the limit of what I like reading when it comes to explicit violence; however, the hunt for this ruthless serial kiler was what kept me reading. Who could be so evil and yet proclaim themselves to be so self-righteous in his pursuit of truth?

There are your run of the mill psychoogical thrillers and then there is this series by Cody McFadyen. McFadyen's antagonists are bone-chillingly realistic; evil personified. Smky Carrett and her team have all seemed to have been to t
How ... timely this book was. Yet another solid thriller from McFadyen. I enjoy the Smoky Barret series a lot. I think the second book had one of the most emotionally moving scenes of death I've ever heard. This, the third book in the series, is no disappointment, despite the author using his characters to engage in a bit of scolding to the audience/reader should they happen to disagree with certain elements asserted. However much I enjoy this series, there is something about Smoky that rankles ...more
I bought this book in hopes that it would be a well-written mystery novel, but all I could find was tasteless gore that was supposed to make the book more interesting somehow. I finished it wishing I had never picked it up.
3.5/5 stars. I hate it when authors of a series repeat too much information in the subsequent books. Write for the reader who starts at book one and follows the series. If someone comes late to the dance, they can go back and read the earlier ones, or figure it out. But please stop wasting my time as a loyal reader; it really turns me off! Especially when it's verbatim. If I have to read the same passage about the shape of Smoky's scar or about how James is a genius, etc. I worry I will explode! ...more
This book sure left me in a shock, on the 10th page! Well, reading it on the side to Hagen's "Murderers" it makes it feel quite real. Morbid, vulgar, even brutal at some point, a true idea of a good thriller. The religious side of the murders keeps me thinking about the fanaticism and extreme ways of the (some, most) Catholics today. Characters were well done, from the basic idea to complete life told in a few sentences (talking 'bout Smokey whose life sure won't let you stay neutral). All in al ...more
I really enjoyed the first two books by this author. Though I gave this book 2 stars, it's probably closer to a 2.5. But since I can't give that I had to err on the lower side of the scale. While I had issues with the first book, I still felt a level of connection with the characters. The second book I really enjoyed the character development of the victim's story. I just didn't have those feelings for this one and it made the book fall flat for me. I'm hoping that the fourth one gets back to th ...more

I am a junkie when it comes to crime and thriller novels, but this one actually had me feeling so conflicted. There were times I had to put it down and walk away, not sure I could read anymore. But intrigue would always bring me back. I haven't read he other books in this series, and to be honest from the synopsis in this book, I'm not sure I can. I want to, just not sure I can handle the ideas that they process. This is a sign of a gifted writer in my opinion...well done!
Kris - My Novelesque Life

"When FBI Agent Smoky Barrett and her team of investigators are called in by the Director himself to handle a case of murder committed on a flight from Texas to Virginia, the case begins with a shock, and the twists keep coming. It soon becomes apparent that Smoky is dealing with a serial killer who appears to have committed a truly horrific number of murders already, someone who can find people with secrets not just the secrets we all admit to ourselves, but the deepest, innermost secrets

Smoky Barrett is not your typical FBI agent. Unlike the typical man-hunting heroines in other thrillers of this nature, Smoky is emotionally and physically scarred and was mutilated by knife wounds inflicted by a killer who murdered her husband and daughter. In this third outing (after Shadow Man and The Face of Death, she's called into a case by Rosario Reid, the wife of

On a commercial airline flight to Washington, DC a young woman is murdered in her seat and covered with a blanket. She is found at the end of the flight and FBI Agent Smoky Barrett and her talented team are called in and assigned the case. They must be circumspect, the victim has ties to a political powerhouse and presidential candidate. Before long a second body is found in Los Angeles, seemingly unrelated to the first, and they find themselves on the trail of a serial killer.

Stunning title, that left me breathless and powerless at the same time. The killer was insane no doubt about it and religion was the motive for the killing.

"Stuck in the side," Alan offers. "Stuck in the right side," James corrects. "From a religious perspective, that's relevant." I stare at him in sudden understanding. I wonder why I hadn't thought of it myself. "The lance, Longinus," I say. "Very good," James replies. "Sorry," Callie says, "But you've lost me. Can you explain it for the heathe

Smoky Barrett is no stranger to violent crime. She sees it every day in her job as an FBI Special Agent, but she has also experienced it firsthand. Three years ago, her husband and daughter were killed by a serial killer Smoky was chasing. The same man brutalized Smoky, leaving her face horribly disfigured. Her personal tragedies give Smoky a unique insight into both the mind of a killer and the sorrow of a victim.

Smoky Barrett is an FBI Special Agent who normally works out of the LA office. However, when she's called to Washington, DC, to look at the victim of a murder, she knows that there is something going on outside the typical homicide. The victim is the pre-op transgendered female named Lisa Reid, who is the daughter of a powerful Senator. What's odd is that she was killed while aboard an airplane by an object inserted into her right side. The forensic team also finds a silver cross in
