There are 21 short stories in this anthology and almost every single one was so beyond fantastic that I can't even begin to describe them! I was laughing out loud with a great number of these dark comedies. I like the twisted take of most of these stories!

I think the authors here were told to shoot for tones like "quirky" and "funny" when writing about urban supernatural and horror, and most of them overshot directly into "twisted in a disturbing and not funny or thoughtful way." More like "a bad Twilight Zone" vibe.
However, at least all the stories were readable, unlike some of the messes of short stories I have seen in some similar compilations.

Pretty awesome! I generally don't read horror, but there was a Dresden story in this anthology, so I bought it, and figured since it was October, might as well read the rest of them in keeping with the season. There were a lot of good stories in this one! Some were just gruesome, some were verging on shocking, and some were just plain silly, but they were all pretty funny, and the Dresden story is great. All but the Dresden story really do belong in the horror section, though, so be warned.....more

In this review I’ve only listed the stories that are either a “don’t miss” or a “skip it entirely.” All others in the anthology are okay, but not noteworthy on either end of the spectrum. Total of 21 stories in book.
The Ungrateful Dead – Kelly Armstrong – Zombie/Ghost story… fun… 3 stars
Mr. Bear – Joe R. Lansdale – non-horror, un-humorous story… so bad I didn’t even finish it… why in hell did they put this story in here if it didn’t fit t...more

Ok, so the discription of the book says this is a collection of horror stories with a humorous bite. Well if you are expecting humor, look elsewhere. After the first seven stories I couldn't stomach reading any more of this collection.
The worst of the standouts includes Mr. Bear: A horrible not-so-short story about a bear who I'm assuming is supposed to be Smokey The Bear. There is no humor whatsoever in this story. Mr. Bear kidnaps a human male to become his buddy which is to i...more

UGH! The only stories that were truely awesome in this book, in my opinion of course, are as follows:
The Ungrateful Dead by Kelly Armstrong
An Evening with Al Gore by Charlaine Harris
Day Off by Jim Butcher
Please note: I am by no means a Charlaine Harris or Kelly Armstrong fan. As a matter of fact the only way I seem to like Kelly is when she writes short stories, and to be honest this was the first piece of work I have ever ready by Charlaine Harris.

49th book of 2009!!
Horror and Humor make interesting bedfellows in this collection of short stories. Having been presented by the Horror Writers' Association may provide reason for this collection being well-thought and of good quality. I enjoyed all of them except for a story called "Dead Hand" which I couldn't get into because of the NASCAR element. Some were ridiculous, some were laugh-out-loud funny, others were clever.

Horror has never been a genre I would read, but a coworker recommended this book. She knew I am interested in environmental issues and thought I would enjoy Charlaine Harris's story "An Evening with Al Gore". She was right! It wasn't at all what I expected, so I read four more of the short stories by authors whose names I recognized. I particularly enjoyed "The Ungrateful Dead" by Kelley Armstrong--very funny. This is a great book of short, somewhat humorous horror stories by...more

A collection of short stories from some of my favorite paranormal authors but a bit dark for my tastes (which I should have expected since it is from the Horror Writers Association). The first story by Kelley Armstrong involved a welcome glimpse of Jaime Vegas who has been largely absent from Ms. Armstrong's most recent novels and the last story by Jim Butcher tells the story of one of Harry Dresden's rare days off but some of the ironically humorous stories between these two gems were pretty d...more

This is theoretically an anthology of humorous fantasy/urban fantasy stories. I don't know that I found most of them to be more humorous than stories in another fantasy anthology but there were still some good stories. I enjoyed the one about Satan's bell, particularly the ending, and I enjoyed Jim Butcher's Dresden Files story about Harry's day off. I paticularly loved the image of Harry playing D&D as a barbarian. It was nice to see the pack of werewolves again, too. I was beginning to wo...more

This short story collection of humorous horror was hit or miss for me. I loved stories by Jim Butcher, Kelley Armstrong, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Nancy Holder, Nancy Kilpatrick, Sharyn McCrumb, Joe Lansdale, and Jeff Strand. The rest were either unmemorable or just plain bored me. I was surprised to find Charlaine Harris' story all right, not anything special, when she is usually a favorite for me.

I read about half of these stories.
Some of them were very much, not my type of story. Which is why I only read half of them. I may go back and read the rest at some point. Not sure.
I mostly got this book for the Jim Butcher short story. I enjoyed it a great deal. It was just to short! =P
The C. Harris story was neat too.
I found many of the stories to be a little disturbing and freaky. This is why I stopped reading the rest of the book.

Another book where I only read the Dresden story. I probably would give this story three stars.
This story happens after Small Favor. Harry is looking forward to his day off when he can spend time with Luccio. But werewolves, Molly and a group from New Orleans cause a bunch of chaos before he's to meet her.

I didn't care for most of the stories in this one. I basically just wanted to read the Harry Dresden story at the very back of the book. Kenyon's was ok, and Harris's was interesting, but I thought the rest of them were just weird. Smokey the Bear as a perverted, homicidal, arsonist? Really? These weren't horror stories, per se, they were just weird.
Harry's story was good, but I wish it would have been longer. Sigh. You can never have too much Harry, IMHO.

Okay so I assume that the point of this book was that the stories were supposed to be funny and horror. Some of them were quirky and cute, others just came off as weird. Some favorites were Hell in a Handbasket, The Ungrateful Dead, An Evening with Al Gore, and Dear Prudence. Some awful ones were Mr. Bear, The Bell... From Hell, Bitches of the Night, I Know Who You Ate Last Summer and Dead Hand.

This should be rated one star for general principle. I found nearly all of the stories within it to be crap. Crap! Most of them I couldn't even bother to finish reading.
I've rated it two stars, however, because one of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden stories is included, and that story was quite good. It's a real pity it isn't keeping better company.

I will admit I only read about half the stories in this book all the way through (the others I just skimmed). But for the most part I really enjoyed the ones I did read, they made picking up the book actually worth it to me. Especially Jim Butcher's and Kelley Armstrong's stories, very funny tidbits on some of my favorite characters.

I started reading this and many of the no name authors I tried were very slow going. I skipped around trying to get through it all, but they were just bad. So I went to the authors I know and even some of those weren't that great. I believe I liked 3 out of all the ones I read.

I managed to make it through about six or seven of these stories and I thought I was a fan of black comedy, but not if this book is it's only source.
I usually enjoy these authors, so I will continue to try anthologies, but I don't recommend this one.
