I'm only half way through, but a terribly interesting little book. Kant essentially treats nations as persons and then applies his categorical imperitive, particularly its second formation from the Groundwork - treat people as ends, never means - as the basis for creating perpetual peace.
Very interesting point he makes about democracies being despotic by definition - but I think this is avoided by the notion of separation of powers. All the same, he has me thinking about this. His...more

In this short pamphlet, Kant lays out his thoughts on how to achieve permanent peace between nation states. Although I found some of it hard going, particularly the first supplement, some of it is very forward-looking, placing Kant very ahead of his time. He says, for example, that standing armies should be wound down and eventually abolished and that there should be no foreign debt between nations - ideas that are radical even today! Very interesting and thought-provoking stuff.

brilliant!
the predicition of the peace course the world would take by one of it's greatest geniuses! So far he's been absolutely right, and with the nuke now publicly available we have to follow his path to avoid annihilation!
If he'd only have written a bit more skilled in terms of writing a readable piece. Well, he was a mathsteacher after all.

Well argued theories on international relations and the development of a lasting peace...

Find out how we will achieve peace through war and continual conflict. This is an important, though troubling work of political philosophy by the great thinker, though it is mediocre when compared to the historical dialectics of Hegel. For evidence of Kant's racism/ethnocentrism, read the section on Cosmopolitanism, in which Kant effectively excludes all humans outside of the Ancient Greece and the West from the human project. Well, one can't assume a great transcendental thinker will also be en...more

so i wasn't going to add this to my books but i felt like with all the embarrassed admissions i'd been making (romance, etc.), i needed to balance it out with proof that i have read substantive works as well - not that I understood any of this, but it sits on my shelf proudly and pretentiously.

I love his essay on "Perpetual Peace" - everyone should read this essay - it would make the world a better place...no kidding. It's absolutely idealistic, but idealism is what this world needs - it certainly was what I needed freshman year of college, when I first read the essay.

Sejak kapan aku bisa bahasa Jerman? Buku ini aku beli edisi bilingual, Indonesia-Jerman. Penasaran dengan judulnya. Adakah perdamaian abadi?
PS: Belum sempat baca dengan baik. Nanti nulis lagi kalau sudah baca.

Once you've got your tautologic ideas, your metaphyics, what do you do? You go into political theory! And Kant did this better, in my opinion, than anyone. Well, Hegel was no slouch either with his organic Fascism...
