On a lonely stretch of Welsh coastline, a fisherman is killed by a hideous creature from beneath the waves. When the Doctor and Rose arrive, they discover a village where the children are plagued by nightmares, and the nights are ruled by monsters. The villagers suspect that ancient industrialist Nathanial Morton is to blame, but the Doctor has suspicions of his own. Who a...more

This was a particularly strong entry in the BBC line of tie-in Doctor Who novels. Mike Tucker does lots of things right -- he nails the Doctor and Rose perfectly, gives both of them important things to do, and for an added bonus cooks up a scary, atmospheric romp and well-drawn peripheral characters. Tucker also gets extra points for excellent use of descriptive language. Just because a story is targeted to Young Adult readers doesn't mean that vocabulary or sentence structure need be dumbed d...more

This was one of the better Doctor Who novelisations I've read. The characters reflected the "real" Rose and Ten, as well as their actions. And the plot was actually pretty creepy... an old "war god" alien had crashed on earth years ago, and several kids who witnessed the crash received bits of it in their minds, rendering them permanantly unable to function in society. The aliens' people came to Earth (Wales!) in order to piece him back together again, using the nightmares...more

Doctor Who, the lately revived British television show that started in the 60's, has long been a favorite of mine. However, when I first saw David Tennant portray the Doctor I was IN LOVE. The downside was that they aired very few episodes for my liking. If only I could get my hands on more of his adventures......TA DA!
This particular book is David as the Doctor on an adventure with his companion Rose (as played by Billie Piper). The writer is good at "keeping the feel of Doctor Who"...more

Mike Tucker's The Nightmare of Black Island is a Tenth Doctor book, one of the new hardback series, and this one's Ten and Rose. It's a pretty standard-type Doctor adventure: you got your spooky remote locale (including an abandoned lighthouse), you got your townsfolk all scared of spooky things going on, you got your mysterious recluse up to mysterious doings. And oh yeah, there's also aliens! But it's also a fairly kid-friendly adventure, too; nothing terribly scary, and nothing unusual in the...more

Oh, I can never get enough of the 10th Doctor and Rose! In this book there's a moment when someone refers to her as his girlfriend and he doesn't even flinch. The plot concerns yet another alien menace that happens to be hiding in the United Kingdom. What are the odds? But I liked the locals and the contrast between the ordinariness they tried to maintain in their lives and the horror that surrounded them. The Doctor and Rose seem to be very much in character, and I liked how they really ha...more

I enjoyed this one. The story was interesting and Rose and The Doctor very true to character (I could hear Tennant's voice in my head - or rather Ten's voice:)- still I don't have a lot to compare it to because this is only my second DW novel. I'm still not sure what I should be expecting - or if I'm expecting too much, but I'd like a bit more character development not touched on in the TV show. I liked the nod to Torchwood and the Doctor's thought on Rose at the very beginning.

I love the combination of the tenth Doctor and Rose, and luckily they are captured with precision by Mike Tucker. The ending gets a bit silly, but how can you not like a book with this perfect tenth Doctor moment:
"Hear it?" whispered Ali. "I think it's one of the monsters."
"Do you? Well, it's your lucky day." The Doctor stood up, straightening his coat. "'Cause I'm the Doctor, and if there's one thing I do well, it's monsters."

A surprisingly good Doctor Who story. I have come to expect lesser quality from the books, but this one was nearly on par with the tv show. With some good interactions between the Doctor and Rose, a few interesting local characters, and some 'nightmarish' monsters, the Doctor has his hands full from the moment the story starts. It was a lot of fun.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes the Doctor.

i love this one from the setting to the storyline everything about it was fantastic .i love all the Rose and dr ones because you could just feel the delight he felt at showing the universe to Rose though his eyes and the love and delight he felt at having her with him .there was an almost sinsiter eerie feel which only added to a really good book .

Well... yeah.

Another Ten/Rose adventure, read by Anthony Stewart Head.

While I’m the very first to admit that Anthony Stewart Head has one of the most wonderful voices (speaking and singing) I’ve ever listened to, I have to say that he’s not very good at “impersonating” people. Or voices. He says so himself during a short behind-the-scenes discussion with author Mike Tucker, that’s also included on this CD. And... sorry, but he’s right. He doesn’t sound like the Tenth Doc...more

The writer managed to capture Ten's manic behavior. No small feat. On one of the Doctor Who comm, someone asked how in the future would the 10th Doctor be remembered. What would be in his "film reel"? Someone came up with the best answer : a jump cut scene where Ten goes : "No! Yes! No! Wait! No! Oh! Wait! Aha!..." and I might add makes his hair go in a thousand directions. Tucker managed to give us the reader *that* Doctor in Nightmare of Black Island. It's the closest I've ...more

I don't read novelizations of tv shows. Ever.

That said, I read this one, because I have lost my Doctor, and I am sadly missing him.

The author did a fairly good job of portraying Ten, and the plot wasn't horrible...but the writing is pretty much on level with a Nancy Drew book.

This new series of books is obviously aimed at a younger audience, but this one was pretty good for adults too. One of the better ones, in fact. It reads like a traditional tale from the Hinchcliffe era, but at the same time, retains some of the vibe of the new series.

I'm surprised I liked this book as much as I did. I really only set out to pre-read it before letting my son loose on it. In the end I really enjoyed it and felt the author really wrote Dr Number 10 well.
The story was fun, and kept me interested.
Now my 10 year old is ready to snap it up.

A bit of fluffy reading, just like watching an hour-long episode of the show. This story featured Doc #10 and Rose, poking around in Wales, thwarting the plans of some aliens. Standard stuff really :) Worth the 2 quid I paid for it in a charity shop.

The most well-written Doctor Who book out there. I don't care- it got the tone of Doctor and Rose perfectly, I loved the all the details that he put in, the setting and the plot were great, and as if that weren't enough, there was a lighthouse.

This is the very first book I read in one day. They usually take me weeks to finish as I am a lazy reader. This is a spooky and kind of secret book. Everyone has a secret in this book.

There weren't as many Ten/Rose moments in this book as The Stone Rose. Nevertheless, it had a creepy atmosphere with an island filled with nightmares, literally.

almost as good as Peacemaker, lots of fun for Doctor Who fans. Humor, suspense, quips, and a mystery to solve.

Again an okay story but I don't think I like Dr Who story themes but the relationship and humour is nice

Typical "monsters on the moor" story for the good Doctor and Rose. Enjoyable but a bit predictable.

I enjoyed this story, the doctor who books are fun make a good break between serious books. I think this one portrayed the Doctor and Rose well probably the best of the four I have read so far. Very good.

Recommends it for: someone who likes to be chiiled down their spine.
This book is really scary!!!
THe Doctor and Rose land the Tardis on this black island, where there is no one on it. Until the find a small hut filled with terrified villagers. They are all too scared to go outside the hut, because there are strange scary monsters lurking around the island for something to eat.
The doctor and Rose are trying to find out why theses monsters have invaded the island, but as they set foot out side to find out, they have no idea what is following them!!!
