I have read some of the bone books in the past but my favorite one has been the fifth bone book. It is called Roque Jaw Master of the Easter Border. This book follows Fone Bone and Smiley Bone as they try to return Bartleby (the baby rat creature they found) to the mountains with the other rat creatures. Along the way they meet Roque Jaw who is a huge mountain lion that captures the three of them. This is because he believes that their cousin Phoney Bone has the power to unite the valley.

This is another part of the bone"s sequel is about the time bone and smiley are still alone in the woods with a fellow freind along with them, and a rat creature cub that is lost. Smiley and the cub love each other and always are together. So when they keep traveling along in the woods, they meet this big tiger named " Rock Jaw" who is master of the eastern border which means everything on the mountain that Bone is standing on is all his. Fun! I'm fascinated by the way that Rock Jaw's insistence on clear-cut "sides" actually highlights how not-clear-cut the conflict in these books is, especially when you juxtapose it against the rat creatures' explanation about Kingdok and the Hooded One.
It's weird that the two stupid rat creatures - generally funny and too incompetent to be dangerous - continue to seem kind of bumbling and vaguely sympathetic even in a volume when we meet numerous furry little creatures wh More...

I like this book because it has action because there are two sides and everybody has to pick one and each side is rat creatures and dragons against each other.I lkie the dragons because the bone creatures are on it and there very nice and do anything to protect the people around them.I hate the rat creatures because they are trying to take over by baring the star from phonobicle(bone creature)and kidnap the princess.I feel bad for the animals in this story because the animals parents got eaten b

The plot in this book Fone Bone and smiley go into the forest. To let the cub rat creature go free. But they get into a lot of trouble, with a mountain lion, and more rat creatures. Smiley and Fone Bone find out that their cousin's life is in danger. Smiley is sad becuase the rat cub creature left with his own kind.
I can connect to this book because i would be very scared for my life. If i was being attacked by rat creatures. Knowing that they want my cousin, so they might use me to get More...

This is the 5th book in the nine book Bone series by Jeff Smith. This is a good installment in the series and introduces some new characters to the series.
This book deals with Fone Bone and Smiley Bone and the rat monster baby that they saved. They encounter a new (large and in charge) character, a giant cougar, named Roque Ja. Of course the Bones take to calling him Rock Jaw which pisses him off. There is much running from bad guys and trying to determine who is one who's side and More...

Reason for Reading: next in the series.
Time for a change of pace as this book focuses on Fone Bone and Smiley Bone as they go up into the mountains to release the baby rat creature cub that they found in the previous volume. Smiley has become attached to him and named him Bartelby. They meet lots of new & a few old characters and the two stupid rat creatures continue to try and catch them, Roque Ja takes them hostage and the young possums find their trail once again meeting up with a w More...

Bone: Rock Jaw Volume 5 takes place entirely on a cliff on the outskirts of the Valley. Here the story centers on Fone Bone and Smiley Bone's quest to return the Rat Creature Pup back to its family, only to run into Roque Ja (Rock Jaw), a Tiger. From here all sorts of troubles await our lovable duo as they meet a host of other characters that help them escape from Rock Jaw and Kingdok. I was kind of surprised that the majority of the Volume was basically one story set in one setting. It does tak

By Volume 3 of Bone, Eyes of the Storm, I knew I wanted to finish reading the entire series. I grabbed every volume I had read yet from my local library and proceeded to read them. Unfortunately what I didn't realize was that Volumes 5 and 9 were missing. In fact, my local library doesn't have those two volumes. So I had to put them on hold and read them out of order from the rest of the series.
In Volume 5, the Bone cousins are separated from the group. They've befriended a rat creat More...

Bone series, book 5.
In the last book, Fone and Smiley Bone set out to return a baby rat creature to his kind. When we catch up with them here, Smiley is trying to teach the baby rat monster, now known as Bartleby, how to take a nap after lunch. He asks Fone to read to them out of Moby Dick and so put them to sleep. Having had my own experiences with Moby Dick, I could completely relate!

A brief escape from the darkness that the narrative's been immersed in, with a return to the delightful whimsy we saw in the series' start. The situations are still dire, but there's no mistaking the lightheartedness of the orphaned animals, and of course Smiley and Bartleby make for comedy goodness nearly every time. We meet the new character Roque Ja, who's clearly inspired by Disney's Shere Khan, and whose affiliation remains a bit of a mystery by the end of this volume (in spite of his actio

TALKING BABY ANIMALS seriously do I have to say anything more. OK, big giant super annoying cat. Very aggravating, very interesting. This book starts a major inconsistency, however, which will come up later--namely Fone Bone's encounter with paranormal powers, which he acknowledges as real in this story (trying not to give away too much!), but which he later, inexplicably and without narrative justification, claims are impossible. The characterization in this series is so wonderful that I wa

This book is bout the three Bone cousins trying to take over the east side of the border. The cousins went threw alot of stress and patients to over come the obious of not getting the east side of the border. The three Bone cousins all have an external conflict. Which is, should they all head back home even though they can't get the east side of the border, or keep going, and succed. I would give this book a 5 becase it shows how all three of the bone cousins are relentless to save and kep th

The name of the book I read is Rock Jaw Master of the Eastern Border, written by Jeff Smith. This book is the fifth book in the Bone series. This is a graphic novel and takes place in a fictitious land. This series of novels is about a land filled with dragons people called bones, and lastly these strange evil rat creatures. In the story Fone bone, the main character, finds himself along with his cousin and a baby rat creature in the land belonging to a large mountain lion named Roque Ja. This l

Can this guy DRAW, or what? Magnificent as always, another typically charming installment in the Bone series. This one has the added bonus of largely involving the adventures of a bunch of cute baby animals. Awww. Awe, actually is what you feel when you read this guy's stuff. His drawings are funny/cute/smart and the overall feel is cinematic. I always feel a bit silly describing any comic as cinematic. I mean, that's the point isn't it? But some do it better than others.

Reprints Bone #28-32. Smiley and Fone try to get Bartleby back to the Rat Creatures and find themselves trapped by Roque Ja. This is the weakest part of the Bone series. It still has great illustrations and the colored version does help it. The story feels like it meanders a bit here without much of a goal. The Bones go up the mountain, the Bones come down the mountain, the Bones go up the mountain, etc. It still isn't bad, but not Bone at its best.

Jeff Smith handles the many characters in the "Bone" saga with great skill. But I must admit I enjoyed the departure from the human characters in "Rock Jaw." The human characters in "Bone," as in real life, tend to take themselves a little seriously. The animal characters in "Rock Jaw," plus Smiley and Fone Bone, focus on the present moment, how to save their hides from Kingdock, cooperate with Rat Creatures, and maybe grab a sandwich.

This Bone book is when Fone and Smiley Bone get chased down by a gigantic mountain lion named "Rouge Ja". They are helped by small animal orphans to escape, but along the way are ambushed by the rat creatures and their king. Also, they make a major discovery about what the animals call "hum hum". I think that anyone would love these books because it is the easiest seiries to get into the reading zone with.

SImply......Horrible, I liked the Bone series but this.....I don't have words, we don't even get to see grandma, thorn, lucius, phoncible, The dragon, only the two bones going up and down the hill been chased by the rat creatures ad a lion, nothing interesting is revealed, I will read the 6, if it is like this I will not read a Bone book in a long time. Its very difficult to found so bad books......

These books tickle my funny bone!! Yes, pun intended....they always make me laugh, smile, or sometimes feel a little sad. I've developed quite a fondness for Fone, Smiley, and Bartleby (their baby rat creature buddy). The story is progressing quite quickly and I've been pulled into their world. Each time I close one volume I can't wait to open the next. The only problem with that, is soon I will have read the entire series and that will be a sad day indeed!

Hm, the great bone series eh, well theres lots of things i like about this book a good story great artisting work and great characters. What i like about this book's storyis all about surviving from two creatures Rock Jaw and The leader of the Rat Creatures but in the last two book I thought he was dead cause they cut of his arm.

Introduces Rock Jaw, the huge mountain lion who appears to be completely amoral and so far, refuses to pick a side in what is now open warfare between the villagers and the rat creaures. Thorn and the villagers are completely absent from this volume. I hope Bartleby makes a significant return appearance later on.

The saga continues and a new character has been added to the list. Hard to tell whose side he's on, so I'll have to keep reading to see how Roque Ja fits into the master plot. Smiths does a fantastic job of introducing characters little by little so as not to overwhelm the storyline and the reader.
