A young boy describes himself as "loud as a lion, " "quiet as a clam, " "tough as a rhino, " and "gentle as a lamb." A joyful celebration of a child's growing self-awareness, this classic children's book is a teacher's favorite. Illustrations.

Another brilliant book by the Woods duo. I love this one because it can work on many levels. It's a great read aloud for a very young child (1 to 3) because of the vibrant illustrations and simple text. (Available in hardbound, paperback and board book formats) But because it introduces some interesting vocabulary along with comparison and similes it's a great choice for slightly older children (4 to 8) as well. I also love it because it promotes self awareness and confidence.

"Quick as a Cricket" is full of wonderful detailed illustrations. This is a very basic "all about me book" that young readers would love. The only character in this book is a young boy that describes himself using a variety of animals. For example he states, "I'm as loud as a lion." This book would be great to teach comparisons using similes. Also, this book would be a great model for the students to write their own "all about me" book.

4.5 - The copy we read was published in 1993 and I made it a point to let Julia know that this was written in 1982 (I told her it was written only four years after her Mommy was born so she could relate and relate she did - she was amazed the book was so old.)
Some of the illustrations are really breathtaking. The one where the boy swims with the whale is out of this world for example. I loved him with the basset hound, the bunnies, the toad - I don't know that I've ever read any story wit...more

This book was cute, it could be used as a great tool to begin learning about self awareness. The rhymes are fun and the pictures are peaceful. Through the experiences of the main character, students can relate experiences and think of their own.

Activity:
- Have students fill out a worksheet where they fill in the blanks with the phrases from the book. You could extend this activity even more by having students draw pictures that correspond with their experiences. If complet...more

I love the illustrations in this book! I love the message of this book to teach children that they are complex and interesting individuals who can experience all kinds of feelings and emotions.

I received my B.S. degree from BYU in Psychology and then got married and was a stay-at-home mom raising my children for almost 20 years, reading to my children all along the way so this book hits the spot for my interests - children, books and their psychological health.

This book is an educational book that teaches children about moods and senses. The book starts with im as quick as a cricket and goes on describing all the emotions. Loud as a lion, fast as a tiger, slow as a snail, wild as a monkey and many others. This book comes with pictures of the animals, so as your reading the children can each get an animal and when it comes to their animal in the story they can act out what the story is telling. It is a great book for young children.

In this story a little boy uses words to describe himself as he compares those characteristics to different animals who also exhibit them. Its another one of Audrey Woods books. Although not quite as funny as Silly Sally, it is definitely worth the read. I would recommend this book for prek through 2nd grade. After the story, teachers can have children write something special about themselves on an animal cutout and post them around the classroom.

Definite toddler potential. It might be a bit too long for the really young crowd I usually get. So I'm looking at how to shorten, and also involve them without being too repetitive or, well, odd.

8/2/10 I shortened the book, but I think this group could have handled it. They were a good group in joining along with the different animals. They liked the ending.

8/4/10 smaller, younger, wiggly, and more distract-able group. Shortening it was a wise choice. Some followed, some...more

I love the illustrations of this book. So bright, so funny, so imaginative. But I guess I don't really get the point of this book---to teach cliches? The last page doesn't really redeem it for me, but I'm not a kid, so I'm definitely not the intended audience, and maybe it speaks differently to children.

This book is worth buying. While it elicited a mixed response this is the kind of book that will grow with him. On the "put it all together," page we played a memory game trying to match the adjective to the animal. The pictures are whimsical, full of sound and action. Beautiful book.

Not my favorite book by this husband and wife team. The pictures are a little lurid somehow. Simple rhyme with an OK point about the many facets that make up an individual might be a fun book for young kids. It would be quick to memorize and chant along with...

This book was read at preschooler story time today at the library. It had the common set up. Each page had a child showing how she was like the animal on that page. There were realistic illustrations and a good variety in animals.

This is Henry's new favorite nighttime book. We read it a minimum of three times a night. The rhymes are nice. and so is the message. The illustrations are a bit to psychedlic for my taste however.

Another Audrey/Don Wood classic. I've read this so many times to my kids. They love to look at the illustrations. The writing is very simple, but it's a great book.

We love the bright and big pictures. My son loves the silly voices and gestures I do as I read the book, it begs to be read silly.

Cute little book on comparing. Children of all ages will get a kick out of the different animals the little boy in the story compares himself to.

This is a great rhyming book about opposites. It's perfect for a toddler. The illustrations are fun too. I don't own it but I like to.

This is another book we still have from when I was little, and this one was probably my favorite. Another favorite of my kids' too.
Hollie Hancock
The artwork alone in this children's book is worth owning this treasure! Not only is it beautiful to look at, it has a wonderful message.
Tricia
Based upon the creators, this book doesn't disappoint with beautiful illustrations of both animal/child together in their simile form.
Breana Vining
Filled with alliteration, rhyming, adjectives, and other great uses of words, this book exemplifies the many qualities of one individual.
Dorothea
A nice book about imagination and what makes a child unique. Good for a read aloud setting, a library/nursery school etc.
Shelly
Quite a lot of uses for this book for language and self-awareness. Kids really love the predicatable language and pictures.
Cindy
This was my favorite book to read to my girls when they were young. I still flip through it when I come upon it at work.
Anne Robertson
Great for teaching similes because the illustrations are great at making sense of the nonsensical sayings.
Rosemary
The illustrations are lovely and great for starting conversation and building vocabulary with young readers.
Diana
Thank you Ashley, for reminding me of this author's name. The illustrations in this book are incredible.

I hardly remember a thing about this book other than it is the very first one I remember reading on my own.

One of the best books to enhance self-esteem and learn about opposites at the same time :)
